Omni Grove was great!
Play it if you get the chance. Donald Ross, in his prime, redesigned this course and made it special. Puts a premium on shot-making, staying out of bunkers and, certainly, getting it to the hole. His signature false front greens can get frustrating in a hurry!
Due to inclement weather I didn't play
Due to inclement weather in Asheville I wasnt' able to play. I talked to the pro shop at the Grove Park course and they said you would give me a refund. I would like to rebook for Sunday or early Monday. Sunday is goint to be the better day. Please get back to me or tell me how I can reach you by phone.
Thank you, Kim Herrlinger
Awesome donald Ross track, slow play all day
Wonderful old school greens, course was in great shape, classic Donald Ross design. Took just North of 5 hours to play. Pace of play is always hit or miss here unfortunately but worth checking out if you have the patience.
Fair Course
The course was ok at best. Staff was friendly I played as single and didn’t have to wait a shot. People on the course allowed me to play through which helped a lot. The course is tight so you had better hit it straight. The condition of the course is where I get lost at. It is definitely not worth 140 dollars or anywhere close.
Ross course stands the test of time
Played late afternoon (4 pm TT) on a day when it was very wet and raining. Nearly every shot plugged or at least had to be cleaned for the next shot. Course is true Donald Ross design, not long but difficult in the right spots. Greens being very wet would hold shots, making for good approach control with irons. I really enjoyed playing this course, even though I had 7-8 holes where the rain was pouring down, I got soaked but it was worth it. Sun came out on 13th hole and the last few were pleasant.
Classic Donald Ross design at an iconic resort
The Grove Park Inn has been a dramatic and special retreat for 100 years. It is worth just visiting just to see the place. The golf course looks fantastic from a distance as it is carved into the hills below the hotel. The ups and downs are challenging on club selection. The layout is classic and updated to today’s style of play. There was no room to expand so the back tees are capped at 6600 yds. It plays long though, so do not bite off too much on tee choice. Be prepared that there is no driving range so it may be good to have recently practiced and do some stretching beforehand.
I would have given 5 stars except for the greens. It was not that they we that bad but the texture is a little rough and the surfaces so soft that they were extremely slow for a high end course. Uphill putts required a serious rap. Bent grass greens that get a lot of play suffer from pitted ball marks that require daily maintenance. The area had received tons of rain recently so it was very soft with little to no roll. If you have a choice pick a day when they have had a dry spell or you will get lots of mud balls. Great experience though and beautiful.
Fun course but needs more attention
Fun mountain course with nice views, but slow pace to start--had to jump in front of a foursome that managed to fall 2.5 holes behind after four holes. Also there were craters all over the greens. Other than that it was nice, but for $100+, I expect a good pace and cleaned up greens. The Omni can afford a GPS system or to pay a ranger.
Fun, Challenging Course - Pretty Views
This was my first time playing the course.
It was a very pretty course in average condition. I thought for $125 the condition of the course much would be much better and pristine.
This is a resort, mountain course. Because it is a mountain course, you will have a lot of uphill as well as down hill approach shots and tee shots. The course received a lot of rain the day before and so the course was cart path only today. The fairways and greens are bent grass and were quite soggy. I love to play on bent grass courses because they are always much more soft and forgiving than bermuda grass courses. Due to the heavy rains yesterday, the greens had not been cut today and hence they were much slower than I expected. The course does not give the appearance of being a tough/challenging course but in this case, looks are deceiving. This is a challenging classic Donald Ross design It makes for a very enjoyable yet challenging day.
Positives: Greens, Fairways were very lush and full.. Beautiful views and lots of wildlife (wild turkeys, deer, etc.)
Negatives: Cart paths are VERY rough and bumpy where tree roots have created large bumps and humps in the cart paths. Wet and soggy.
Definitely take the opportunity to play the course, but look for a deal because $125 is a little steep for the conditions.
Excellent course
This was even better than I expected! Great shape and a wonderful and challenging variety of holes. Bent grass fairways on which there was no need to improve your lie; bent grass greens that were fast and true. I will go back and play it again!
Beautiful mountain resort course.
This was a beautiful course in fantastic condition. But being a mountain course, you can expect a lot of uphill approach shots. The fairway grass was some of the tightest cut I've ever played and the greens were pretty fast, but not unreasonably so. There were very few people out there when we played and it seems like the kind of course that would never be overcrowded. It doesn't give the appearance of being a tough layout, but looks are deceiving. It makes for a very enjoyable yet challenging day.
Played early with the turkeys
I had an 8:10 tee times and dew was still being whipped from some of the later greens. The course was beautiful and I was paired with another GolfNow member. We flew around the course in little over 3 hours. The greens were wonderfully receptive and putted true although there were some that were a little slower than the rest - maybe that was just uphill.
The scenery was almost distractingly beautiful.
The Hotel is exceptional and the restaurant wonderful overlooking the course.
Disappointed
For what this course charges I’m shocked at how poor the greens were. Fairways were good but for the rates I can’t believe how poor the greens were
Great Donald Ross Design
One of my favorite courses in Western NC. Typical D. Ross design, it’s all about approach shot and putting. The greens a little slower than normal but usually run around 11. No 4 is especially tough when the tee is tucked on the left tee box .Frank and the staff are always friendly and professional.
The pro shop is well stocked and the course is well stocked with beautiful views and a number of wild turkeys...they’re more like tame turkeys! Enjoy!! I’ll be back.
Great Course
Greens were airated only a couple weeks prior in early February and they were still were rolling well. The fairways were in great shape with some minor exceptions. In all, I absolutely love the course. I would quit my job to play 36 here everyday, but this money won't make itself. For practice, they have a putting green and a pitching and chipping range that mirrors the course nicely.
Beautiful Golf course
Beautiful golf course, friendly staff, fun course layout.
