Nice course and nice surroundings
I liked the course but it was in later winter / early spring. The pro shop said it was 90 degrees with the cart but the postings on the course said cart path only. The course was far from easy but it could use some more traps to make it more interesting. The view of the mountains, Grove Park Inn and very nice homes made for a very nice day.
Great views
Got a hot deal and played for $39.00. Cold, 45 degrees, and cloudy day and we had the place to ourselves. Not sure I'd ever play if I had to pay full price, but I would pay $39 to play rounds like I did anytime.
Ric"s Round
Considering that this course had flooding rains over several weeks, it was in good condition. There was major damage to several holes and fairways were wet, HOWEVER thanks to the crews and well established grass, the course play was good. This is an excellent course with rolling fairways and fast greens. Staff was excellent. Highly recommended. Will definitely return to the Grove Park.
Donald Ross at his Best
We played the Grove Park Inn golf course in mid-December. The weather was perfect - low-70s - and the course was in great shape. The greens were fast and the fairways (all belt-grass) were perfect.
Kudos to Fred, the golf starter, was very friendly and knowledgeable.
Donald Ross Classic
With a great rate from golfnow, I played this classic Ross track. Narrow fairways, turtle back greens made for a very challenging round. Greens were still fast after a serious rain. 3 putts were not unusual for the entire group. Great views of surrounding mountains and valleys. Regular rates are for resort guests, not for locals
Great value
Well cared for Donald Ross track...great value...will play again
Sunny October Sunday
The GPI course was in nearly perfect shape. If players would fix divots on greens it would have been perfect. The staff was open and friendly. I love playing here!
Truly Premium Golf
Staff was very professional and helpful. The conditions are absolutely perfect. The fairways are cut nicely tight and are weed free. The greens are extremely fast but soft for receiving approach shots. I was never pushed or held up by any group. It was a perfect day of golf for me.
Great historic course, just get a deal!
Staff was very friendly and helpful. We had 2nd tee time and for the most part we weren't pushing anyone and no one was pushing us. Course is consistently well maintained and was in great condition considering it was late August and the area had had a lot of rain. It is a classic tricky Donald Ross design which presents you good opportunity to reach in Regulation but hold on too your putts! Slick fast rolling greens with subtle to dramtic breaks, and a lot of false fronted greens so select the right club. All in all it was an enjoyable course and enjoyable day, however I'd never suggest paying retail there, you must get a deal and make it a low price deal. There are other courses in the area for around $100 That are in much better shape. Great course and swanky facility!
Very enjoyable experience
I had a lot of fun playing this old Donald Ross design. It's not very long, even from the back tees, but offers a lot of interesting and challenging holes. The greens were in good shape and run pretty quick with classic Ross slopes. I played as a single at a twilight rate and got the whole course in in 3 hours. I'd love to go back and play it again.
Nice Ross Course
A nice place and typical Donald Ross design not sure if this worth 120 or so for some of their rates but if you get a deal on golf now or so it's def with the 75 to 100 price range
quality control an issue
This is a review of the golf course. Every time you step up to a tee box you tell yourself, "man, this is amazing to look at." Truthfully it is. The course is in great shape but if it rains it does not drain well. This place has three faults though.
1. It does not have a driving range. When I go pay top dollar for a nice course or resort I expect to warm up and hit a few. Instead they just have one swing cage where you hit in to a net? No personally don't like unloading my stuff then going to the first tee with out a few swings.
2. The greens are brutal. The problem is members and guests don't fix their divots or ball marks. Most of the greens look like they are fighting chicken pox and your putts will look like a ball on a bumper car ramp. I wish the grounds crew would take the time to fix the greens at night.
3. Remember that it is a tourist stop and guests of hotel play. Sometimes you'll get stuck behind guys who just want to play because they are on vacation. I was disappointed that there was no ranger to monitor them, tell them to fix divots, allow others to play through, or tell them to keep moving.
If you can find a good rate on Golf Now go for it, but I wouldn't pay the fee they ask for at the course. Scenery is great, but you'll be really upset when it's time to putt and score.
The Grove
Very nice course. Pace of play was slow. We did not see the marshall making it better. Greens could have been better. I repaired a dozen or so ball marks that the groups in fron of us left for our putting pleasure.
Great for nostalgia, debatable on price...
When you are charged private club money for a public course, one might expect extraordinary conditions.
While the course is far from a 'cow pasture', there are enough 'problem areas' on the fairways and areas around the greens that you might expect, if not average greens fees, something less than private club rates.
The best part of this course, for obvious reasons; the Donald Ross designed greens. Undulating, and FAST. If you can get past the price, the course is a good track. To score well, you'd better play your approaches, chips, and putts well pretty close to perfect.
In the end, worth playing and an interesting trip along the footsteps of the greats (Bobbie Jones, Ben Hogan, etc. played here), but not quite worth the money to play regularly if you expect conditions to match the price.
For the 19th hole, the resort building gives SPECTACULAR views, but you'll pay handsomely for the privilege.
Great Course/Beautiful Setting
Grove Park proved far more enjoyable than expected. The course is affiliated with the resort in a beautiful old neighborhood in Asheville. The vistas were gorgeous. Even though we were not staying at the resort, the golf staff welcomed us and were great.
Hot, humid & thunderstorms
Should have played another day, but it was our last day on vacation. Really to hot! Had to stop play twice because of storms.
The course plays short in the thin air. The vistas are outstanding!
A lot of history here. Make sure you visit the hotel.
Great Round
The course was in very good shape and the rate of $75 for 18 holes was great. Perfect example of a Donald Ross layout.
Friendly staff and perfect weather helped make it a very enjoyable day.
Resort course
At this time of year course is in good shape as compared to other courses.
As a resort course, there was no ranger. Two in front of us, young couple, male was giving female lessons. She was hitting several balls. They quit after nine, and we then encountered what could be a father and a young girl riding on the back of the cart, who also was practicing golf.
We paid 150 00 for 2, nothing special, lack of ranging golfers, would not go back or recommend it.
Lady Friendly Recreation
Very generous forward tees update this Donald Ross classic to super lady-friendliness. Several couples populated the course on our Sunday round. Even from the back tees the course is short, but the mountain terrain creates surprising bounces and zero flat lies. Quirky, undulating greens defend par. Front flags are close to false fronts that send seemingly adequate shots rolling twenty yards back down the fairway. Shots above the pin set up merciless three-putts. The greens were ball-marked, but quick. Tee boxes and fairways were in good shape. The clubhouse was 1950's in need of an update. Somewhat overpriced, but it's resort golf---handy to downtown and receptive to tourists.
