Honest review - Please read
I’m going to try and keep this short. After reading reviews for the last month or 2 I finally played here. This course will be a hidden gem in about a year or two if the new owners keep sinking money into it. The restaurant / patio area has great character as does the entire course. Mature trees, partial mountain views and plenty of flowing streams add to the beauty of the course. There’s one gorgeous Mountain View on hole 7 I believe, the pine tree needs to be taken down for the full view. The ‘mountain’ 9 holes are not that hilly at all. Most fairways are flat enough for the average golfer. Large greens throughout the course help you reach in regulation. The “spasm” hole is tough, I fought hard for a double bogey.
Staff was super friendly and was lucky to pair up with an employee and a member to help me on the front nine (holes 10-18). Greens were in great shape which is more important than anything. Yes, the fairways and bunkers need some love but it will come. Ignore the trouble spots and any negative reviews. For a $26.50 hot deal, it’s well worth the 40 min drive from Asheville. Highly recommend this course. Be part of the resurrection by supporting the course now and you’ll appreciate it when it starts looking great.
P.S. Cart paths were in better condition than some other reviews stated and water stations need to be added ASAP.
Keeps getting better
The new owners are doing a great job making a great golf course. Today the greens were excellent. The fairways were a little rough as they were seeding, but still very playable. I appreciate that they are going to give me an even better place to play. Can't wait to get back.
Crown Holes
the majority of the holes were crowned making it frustrating to put. Once stamped, would give 5 stars across the board.
Don’t believe the other reviews
This course was in horrible shape. Weeds everywhere. The tee boxes and “fairways” were in awful shape. The only saving grace was the greens and the fact that we could play the course at our pace (nobody was there). I would not recommend anyone play this course.
Great time
My wife and I had a great day today. The staff were so helpful and pleasant. We booked on line and saved a few bucks. The greens were terrific. A little soft but a smooth surface and a decent speed. Beautiful scenery. Only problem was the fairway are little spotty..85 degrees some grass dying but very playable.it was also slow but was done in 4hr.30. Great value $29 for seniors
Value
The course is and has been in excellent shape every time. The staff is friendly and working hard to make this a real gem.
Great Course, awesome staff!
This was a last minute decision to play this course and I definitely will be back. The Back 9 is where you start and it teases you with open fairways and mostly straight forward shots. The front 9 on the other hand throw you for a loop with challenging holes throughout. I will definitely be back!
Packed Course, perfect weather, enjoyable golf
It was a perfect golf day. Temp in 70s, sunny and just a slight breeze. Started on the flatter back nine and finished on the more hilly front nine. Many of the holes, especially in the back nine are just in front of you and there are no tricks, The back nine requires course knowledge to know where to hit/miss. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Course a little wet from lot of recent rain and so the greens were spongy but held well. A good course to play even though pace was slow.
Condition it and they will come
Springdale has appeal for its varied layout and presence of bent grass (a rarity) on a Southern course, and new ownership appears eager to propel the course to "what it could be". What remains to be seen is "if they can pull it off", if only "for the most part".
Springdale lies in a remote area nestled in a small valley within mountainous region, and has a certain "solitude" about it (one is not distracted by noise). Routing now has the front nine properly being the entrance 9, which provides 5 flat holes before it begins to remind the player that remaining terrain will require navigating slopes of varying severity. As one finishes off the last 4 holes of the front nine, they've only "gotten a taste" of what's in store for them on the long pitched back nine, including a string of four arduous 4 pars starting with number 13 (the infamous long uphill dogleg appropriately named "Springdale Spasm" ). The difficulty of the back can erase a good score on the front, even if one's game "didn't desert them" - it's just that "tough" and thus forces the golfer to persevere and "bring it home" to the clubhouse without falling apart.
Adding to the course's mendacity is the fact it's large greens are among the most difficult to read, so a player is challenged mentally as well as physically. But all this prompts a player "wanting to return" for another round to either "make amends" or to indeed prove or cement the notion "they have game".
Springdale is not a place to "find your game", rather a place to "bring your game". It is recommended to all to "try it once" , if only to learn how one's game "stacks up" - and only worth returning to if the new owners make and keep it groomed so as to be "pleasingly playable" and not simply brutal to tour.
While the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, the course just did not live up to my expectations. The potential is there for the course to be a hidden gem in the mountains, but right now it is not. The front nine was a challenge and in better shape than the back only because there was a discernible difference between the rough and the fairway on some holes. There are simply better options in the surrounding area for close to, if not less than, the $28 hot deal that I booked through golf now.
Great shape
Was ext.remely pleased with the whole experience. The fairways were in great shape as were the greens. The back side is open with not a lot of trouble, The front is a bit more of a challenge as the holes are a bit more narrow. Been telling my friends and can't wait to get back.
Fun course
Great lay out greens were great will hold a shot coming in
Great round of golf!!
If you are looking for a great place to enjoy a challenging round of golf in the NC mountains, I highly recommend the Springdale Country Club in Canton (near Bethel). Front nine are all mountain holes and the back nine are more in the valley. You will appreciate the back nine after the challenge of the front nine!! LOL!! Definitely give Springdale a try if you are in the area!!
Will Return
Other than a few wet spots in a couple of areas, this course was a pleasant course to play. I started on the back 9, which was the flat portion of this course, and some much needed confidence for the front 9. The front being the more mountainous portion with blind shots and the infamous "spasm;" which I proudly made a bogey. This is a course I plan to play much more frequently.
Great Day
Great day for golf and the course played fair. Could use better yardage markers and water coolers.
Course is close to being a gem
Played Sun.7/8/18 at 11am; first time back in 4yrs. Course is in very good condition; the big greens held approach shots & putted very smooth. Fairways were good and recent rains had some traps still too wet, but there are very few traps. It's good the course has you play the less hilly side first, to get you warmed up for the second 9, the hilly side.To make this a true gem, the course needs to add a "Silver" set of tees.Right now there is 700 yds between the White tees & the Gold. That's too big a gap. Put in a "Silver" set of tees on holes #4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 15 & 17. For these 7 holes, have a set of tee markers at least 25yds shorter, to make them more playable for the weekend golfer. The other 11 holes, the "Silver" tees could be the same as the Whites. The course needs a set of tees closer to 6,000 to 6,100yds for the Senior player. Those other 7 tough holes now leave you a 180-200yd shot for your second shot on a par 4 hole. That's too long. Fix that, and this course will be a Gem!
Breathtakingly Beautiful Challenge
This is a wonderful course located in one of the scenic locales in the North Carolina Mountains. The course was built to be challenging and lives up to that reputation. The grounds needed a bit of work but the course was recently purchased and the new ownership is rapidly making major improvements. The layout is very well designed, some broad and some narrow fairways, some deadly water traps and creeks that eat balls regularly. Each hole is unique. I highly recommend this as a weekend getaway, the package offers nice well kept cabins, a terrific dining room, new golf carts, and the best staff around to meet any of your needs.
We love playing here and recommend to anyone who will listen.
Not a pleasant experience!
We booked days in advance for this course. Upon arrival we were told that there was a local members "tournament" starting at 12:00. Our T-time was set for 11:50am. Several comments were made by the members that we were not from around here. The tournament was set up as "best ball" play. Our party of four were not playing best ball. Calls were made from the tournament members to the Pro Shop that we were "holding up the world" according to the course ranger who was very rude. After the front nine, we waited in the "dining room" area to allow the members to play through ahead of us, so as not to hold them up. After waiting close to an hour, we resumed our game. On the first t-box we were approached again by some of the members who were very rude. We explained that we were just doing what we had been told to do by the employees in the Pro Shop. I would recommend not playing this course if you are looking for a nice, relaxing game of golf. It's unfortunate because the course is in a beautiful setting. The facilities are definitely dated and outsiders are not welcome.
Spoke with Michael Boss yesterday regarding our July 4th golf experience. He was very understanding and apologized for our golf experience. Our group of four will return to play the course as offered by Mr. Boss. I will post again after our return. I am very impressed with the customer service and attention that has been given this issue. Thank you!
Springdale apologizes to Angelic Whispers. Our July 4th Tournament started at noon and we should have considered the impact on groups teeing off ahead of the tournament. This experience is not representative of our commitment to memorable golf & great customer service.
-Regards, Springdale Country Club
To Angelic Whispers,
We'd like to have you back as our guest, with complimentary green fees. We booked tee times too close to our 4th of July tournament and apologize. We're working hard to create the best mountain golf experience in the region.
Regards, Michael Boss
