Island West Golf Club

About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

Good course. In rough shape
Many tee boxes without grass and hard as rocks. Fairways were without grass in many areas. Greens were inconsistent with some slow and some not as slow, but none fast. Many better options in the area
Least expensive course
Probably the least expensive course on or off the island. Course desperately needs rain. Fairways were in dire need of grass on most holes. One good thing about that was your ball really rolled a long way. Hopefully better conditions in a month or two
Not worth the money
1st time playing in a few years. Not worth the money . The greens were in rough shape and tee boxes were worse. No cartgirl and half way opens at 10:30 and we had a 7:30am tee time….so we could eat at turn. The bag guy and guy in pro shop were nice. That’s the best you get
Great value for a nicely layed out course. Pace o play was great, with under4 hr. round. Great value for a cousre that was not over crowded. I would definitely recommend. Had a good variety of holes that challenged but was a playable course as well.
Burnt Out
There wasn't much grass to be found on the fairways so we had to play "preferred lies' or 'winter rules" to find a decent lie. Some of the greens were not cut and others very. very firm so there was no consistency to chipping or putting. Many tee boxes were barren.
Good Bones
This course was probably great in its prime and may be again. The staff was great the course hmmmmmm. Some really funky holes and tees were in very bad shape. Very tight among the lovely community.
Goat ranch
Island West golf course owner listen up: close this place now and open a race track. Wouldn't take much work, since there is NO grass and the ground is bone dry and rock hard. Tees, fairways, greens...all bare with sparse grass and the only green is weeds. Unbelievable that a course in this region is in such poor conditions, especially since other courses look great.
Good Value, nice layout and good greens!
I've played a number of reasonably priced public courses in the Bluffton area and Island West is definitely one of the best around. You can see ongoing work aimed at improving all aspects of the course, especially greens and tee boxes. Most of the white/blue tees looked to be in good shape. I played off the green tees, some of which were a bit worn (they were aerated, which shows the management is trying, but not yet there). In general, the greens are way better than average, and putt true.
I'm pretty sure you will enjoy your round there.
course hasn’t improved since 1st in March
putting on the greens was like putting on asphalt greens were better during my first round ion March 8
Descent condition
I played this course about 30 years ago and wanted to play it again for old times sake. On reading the reviews I was a bit apprehensive as to the course condition, but I enjoyed my round and although not pristine it was in better condition than I thought based on some of the reviews. I played in March and the growing season had not quite kicked in, but all in all I would recommend the course and suggest you do not be put off by older negative reviews.
Great potential
Coming to Hilton Head annually for 18 years, 1st time playing this course. Staff ((cart gut, pro shop, bartender, etc) were all super friendly. I found the course design/layout to be phenomenal with open tee shots but very challenging 2nd/3rd shots due to water & traps. Tee boxes were pretty chewed up, fairways were very thin, but greens were good. Wish I played here during its more glory days but I hear better days are ahead with a slow & steady improvement progress. Will definitely return once reviews indicates conditions significantly improved. In great shape, this could be one of the best area courses to play.
Good place to play.
The course was an all around 4 out of 5. Nothing was exceptional, but everything was good and we have no complaints.
Poor condition
I love the layout. The staff was great. Unfortunately the tee boxes were dirt, the fairways were bare, and the greens were hard. They were not able to stop a shot, they just bounced over. It’s too bad. It’s a great value and close to Hilton Head. We had to roll it over to get something to hit off in every fairway.
