Sterling Hills Golf Club
About
Sterling Hills Golf Club sprawls across acres of lush countryside surrounded by avocado groves and citrus orchards. The layout winds through the verdant hills between Oxnard and Ventura. The club opened in 1999 as the only public golf course in Ventura County. The layout is player-friendly enough for beginners to still feel comfortable but it also packs a considerable amount of challenges. The versatile layout balances areas of wide-openness with target-style golf. There is contoured mounding along the fairways and some interesting elevation changes. Thanks to the hilly terrain, there is hardly a flat lie to be found. Although Sterling Hills is still relatively young, there are some mature eucalyptus trees throughout. Golfers can warm-up on the driving range, chipping area, or putting green before the game since a bucket of range balls is included with the round.

A Saturday round
This is a nice public course, great staff and a 4 hour round on a Saturday afternoon. Very enjoyable!
Great Course
It’s definitely not an easy course but it was still lots of fun. Bring more balls than you think you may need.
Kicked off course!
Monday tee time @10:09 booked on TeeOff for 2 players. At check in we told our name and tee time and were asked who’s paying. We said we were pre-paid. Another man stepped in and said yes you are. Then he asked how much we paid and I said $25 each. He then said it’s $65 to play here and you have a twilight rate. You got that rate because we have a high school playoff tournament at 1:00 today. It’s a shotgun start at all 18 holes and you have to be off the course at 1:00. No exceptions!!!! Great way to run a business. We only played (12) holes….
We sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding that led to your negative feedback. Sterling Hills is conscientious about being as transparent as possible. We strive to include tournament notices on our website and through our booking partners. Notes are made on our tee sheets, so that our staff is fully informed and will (ideally) communicate clearly with those calling in. Given that you booked online, it appears that this information may have been missed or not included on the day of your booking. We've addressed this with our partners to prevent such issues in the future.
We understand the inconvenience this caused and appreciate your understanding. As a gesture of goodwill, we would be pleased to offer you a full round at the 9-hole rate on your next visit if you would like to give us a call to make those arrangements. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Sterling Hills Golf Club.
Surprise! Kicked off course after 9 holes by a tournament! Sorry!
GolfNow Deal for 18 holes...showed up at course...was informed must be off by 1pm due to HS tournament...tried to rush but group in front was slow as molasses...had to wait 5 minutes to tee off on each hole...so group behind us was always breathing down our necks as we teed off...then after 2 1/2 hourse of this we got kicked off by marshall prior to 1pm after 9 holes... No happy campers in our group! Course limitation should have been disclosed! Buyer beware! GolfNow needs to provide better information to its members. There are aerification alerts....why not others such as shortplays / 9 holes only / course restrictions (with reasons)?

Course has improved!
Been several months since I last played this course. Seems like it's in better condition than I remembered. Enjoyed the round!
We're thrilled to hear the course conditions have improved since your last visit and that you enjoyed your round! Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.
Good day
Course in condition, fairways green, putting greens a little fast especially when pin placement is down slope
Which makes it interesting.
Thank you for your feedback; we're glad to hear you've enjoyed the conditions of the course. We'll take note of your observation regarding the speed of the greens for a better experience.
Fairways and greens
I think the fairways are the best I have seen them in many years and I have played this course since it opened. The greens were putting very true also Great job guys !!!!
Courses in pretty good condition
Pace of play was very slow!!
Horrible customer service
We had foursome booked on Tuesday but Evidently there was a tournament scheduled for that evening at 5pm. When we checked in for our tee time, this was not mentioned to us. We were not told that we would be bumped off any hole that we were on once the tournament started until we were on hole 5 when a Marshall came to inform us 445 that we need to move to hole 8 at 5pm. There were 3 groups in front of us and we were all pushed to hole 8 at 5pm. How does this even make sense? Needless to say we didn’t get to finish a full 18 holes of which we paid for and when we spoke to the tournament director Matt Pavin, he was a beyond rude, extremely disrespectful, arrogant and lied to our faces. He was not at the counter when we checked in for our tee time but yet he stated that we were told about the tournament and we shouldn’t be complaining and refused to refund us or compensate us in any way. Matt Pavin should not be in the hospitality industry in any capacity whatsoever as he is completely unfit to serve the public.
Worst Customer Service
Round started out fine! 330pm time. We were then told by the marshal as we were on the 4th hole that we need to be on the 7th hole by 5pm. No way that was going to happen. They had a shotgun starting at 5pm. So we skipped the 6th hole and proceeded to the 7th where there were two other foursomes waiting. This put us back over an over and we didn’t finish all 18. The next morning I called the pro shop and spoke with Matt Pavin. I kindly asked “ I was wondering if there was anything you could do for us”. I was then scolded and told that I shouldn’t expect to finish a twilight round regardless of the circumstances ($50.00 btw) and that he didn’t appreciate that I called and “demanded” an accommodation. I was then told that his staff told all of us when we checked in that there was a tournament at 5pm and that we would get a free 9 hole round. This never happened. Hence the reason I called the next day, obviously. We went back and forth on this for a minute as none of us in the group knew anything about it(with 3 of the four checking in separately too). Marshall also did say anything about the 9 holes. When I asked him if he was there when we checked in to hear them tell us about the tournament he hung up on me!!!! Sterlings now off the list!
Mr. Hoppe is indeed entitled to a further apology. Upon my arrival on the following day, my team briefed me on a complaint from the previous day concerning slow play, which had hindered this group's ability to complete the requisite number of holes before a scheduled late afternoon league event. Consequently, Mr. Hoppe's group was unable to play a full round of 18 holes. We explained to the affected parties that twilight rates do not ensure the completion of 18 holes, and although we strive to regulate the pace of play, it is sometimes beyond our control. As a gesture of goodwill, we issued each player a voucher for 9 holes, redeemable at a future date.
The following morning, before my arrival, another call was received. The staff, under the impression it was the same individual from the previous day, requested he call back at a time when I would be present. It later transpired that this was a different individual, whose description of the events significantly differed from the initial account and did not align with our standard policy of informing players about specific timings on the course in case of potential scheduling conflicts. The likelihood of this oversight occurring is highly improbable, given our commitment to transparency and managing expectations effectively.
This misunderstanding arose from my mistaken belief that I was conversing with the previously mentioned individual. Upon realizing this error, and after mistakenly assuming he had already received compensation, my patience waned, leading to a circular and ultimately fruitless conversation. Admittedly, this was not my finest moment.
To rectify the situation, I am pleased to offer Mr. Hoppe and his playing partners a complimentary round of golf, irrespective of whether he chooses to visit our course again. - M Pavin
We're glad to hear you enjoyed the challenge and had fun! Thank you for your valuable suggestion for future players.
