The Gauntlet Golf Club
About
The Gauntlet is situated along the banks of the lake that is the centerpiece of Curtis Memorial Park. When it first opened in 1995, Golf Digest recognized it as one of the "top ten new courses to play in the U.S." This challenging layout will definitely test your shot making abilities. The golf course begins with a tough front nine that has several sharp doglegs over water and tall grasses. There are also a slew of blind shots. The back nine is a bit gentler since there's less water and it is more open and forgiving, but the large, multi-tiered greens can be tricky. The fourth hole is the golf course's signature. Your tee shot will have to carry a marsh to a narrow landing area on this par 5. After that, you'll be faced with a triple-tiered green with the lake to the left and bunkers to the right.

Gauntlet GC
Great challenging layout with a variety of up and down holes, quite a few blind tee and approach shots. Local knowledge would go along way here. Conditions of the fairways and most greens were great but the course is getting a very rough around the edges. Fairways lies were perfect and the greens rolled true, smooth and quick. Most greens quite large making club selection a little challenging. Thought the course was fair until the last two holes which were fun and frustrating at the same time. 17 starts with a benign tee shot with a 200 yd club and when I got to my ball I was able to witness the craziest green complex I've ever seen. Minimum two clubs uphill, you can see a tongue of the green leading to the upper level. Quite awesome. 18 starts with a normal fade tee ball and appears to be a regular approach shot but the green is 50 yards long at an angle. I placed the ball on the middle of the green and had no way to keep the ball on the green when putting downhill due to the steep slope between levels. Didn't think the course played any tighter than most just penalizing for way word shots. Bunker sand inconsistent, Fun golf course would definitely play again!
Really narrow fairways!!! Not good for beginner!!!

Great Fairways and Staff!
Hard to find better conditioned fairways. The tee boxes could use some work, as well as the greens. But overall the course was in really good shape. The staff couldn't have been nicer and the burger (two patties!) at the grill is one of the best I've ever had! Challenging course with lots of blind tee shots and sharp doglegs. Need to play it a couple of more times before I'd feel comfortable with yardages and aim points. Saw roughly a dozen deer wandering the course on various holes. Love the park's natural setting with no houses.
Good conditions. Tee boxes could be in better shape
Played on an early Sunday morning. Pace of play was great. Fairways and greens were in very good shape. The tee boxes weren't in great shape and could use some work and a few of the bunkers need more sand. Keep the ball in the fairway and you'll be ok. Miss the fairways and you'll be penalized. Overall a very good value. I will play here again.
Very nice surprise
We had a 3:00 tee time for after work. After getting there a few minutes late because of some VERY heavy traffic, the people at the pro shop seemed a little annoyed. So we were a little doubtful before we started and felt a little negative and were just hoping to get through the round. But man this course was just a pleasant and beautiful surprise. Fairways were nice traps in good shape and the rough was a challenge but not obnoxious. On the back 9 I found I lost my lob wedge and I reported it at the pro shop. At this point the people were super friendly and helpful even calling later in the evening with a possible club for me (wrong one though). Negatives were no beverage carts and pace of play was slow they need a ranger. But this course was beautiful!
Fun course
This course has its challenges, so 90 degree doglegs that require strategic tee shots. Fairways and greens in good shape. Second time in a row that there was a wedding on the #10 tee box as we made the turn, requiring us to detour around to #11 and play #10 as our 18th hole. Slight inconvenience but we were able to get some of the wedding party's food at the 19th so we'll call it even.
Challenging course
A great course with the friendliest staff in the area! There are lots of blind tee shots, so be prepared. Course management is at a premium, it's not just grip it and rip it on every hole.
Tricky and not great maintenance
Thank goodness I was paired with someone who knew the course well as there are maybe two holes on the entire course (except the par 3's) where you can actually see the green from the tee nor know where the trouble lies. Greens are OK, design is well, a Dye - very tough with lots of slopes that will send you to bad places. Greens were OK but the areas around the greens very poorly maintained - bare spots everywhere, sand traps are dirt, have hardly any sand in them. Rough was high (which is OK) but since fairways are often very narrow it makes it even more punishing. This could be a good course, just isn't so great right now - thank goodness for the Golf Now discount green fee.
Running the Gauntlet
This course is very challenging, lots of blind shots. It is not long but you need to be accurate. You will pay a price for missing the green and for being too aggressive. Take someone who knows the course with you, Course management is a not a option it is a requirement.
With all that I had fun, there are some beautiful holes and views and will play it again. I like the challenge.
Hidden place
I was searching around to play golf on weekend..... I picked Gauntlet Golf course because I pass it almost every day pass one year... On my way to work.... It is a value jewel for the money.
Greatly Improved!
Have played here mutliple times over the past 8 years, course is in best condition I have ever seen it. Much better than the other Stafford area courses right now. 3/4 of the faiways have grown in and the ball sits up nicely - like hitting off a tee. The GolfNow rates are excellent, especially the twilight specials. Definitely recommend Gauntlet Golf Course.
Fun Course
Course played well given the soggy conditions and light rain throughout the round.
Poor conditions
The course is not in good shape at this time. It appears they have done very little maintenance. The greens had large aeration holes and were sand covered. I played this course several yrars ago and loved it. I would not recommend this course for play for several weeks. Hopefully they can get it together in that time frame. The layout is challenging and a lot of fun. The fairways have not turned yet and are still dorment.
Very challenging course, ok condition.
When I played this course, the fairways and tee boxes were soaking wet beyond any saturated course I've played in the past. Pools of water lined the fairways and crowded the tee boxes. The course itself has a VERY difficult layout from the "dye" (back) tee's. Many tee shots were blind shots at the fairway over rolling hills. A few short par 5's easily reachable in two but two or three very long par 4's and an excessively long par 3 (277 yards lasered and into the wind). The course could definitely be something to brag about if they were to thin the treelines surrounding the lake and spend a bit more on upkeep. The greens were somewhat inconsistent and the overall course condition left something to be desired. I'm certain some of these issues wouldn't pertain to the course during summer however I found the rough to be easier to hit off then the oddly soft (saturated) bermuda fairways. The staff were very cheerful and kind and the course was incredibly challenging for myself as a single digit handicap. I plan on playing it again in the summer to see how the course condition compares.
This is a must play course in Northern VA
The course was in great condition for the middle of the winter, I like the fact that they are cutting down a few trees so the golfers can have the beautiful view of the lake as well as the lower and upper 9 holes. The staff are very friendly and helpful, they go out of their way to make sure you are well taken care of.
This course has good condition.
I like this course that people are saying kindness and good foods..
Conditions
Pretty good for this time of the year, food is great!!
Gauntlet
Very challenging with a lot of blind shots.
Greens were in excellent shape.
Good course for the price.
Will play again
It was windy this day and somewhat wet, but the course played firm and the greens rolled nice. It's tough to play a course like this for the first time with other newbies. Not very long either.
