Victoria Golf Course
About
The Links at Victoria Golf Course has a convenient location in Carson that is easily accessible from the South Bay, downtown Los Angeles, or Orange County. William Bell, the mastermind who crafted the Torrey Pines courses, also designed the Links at Victoria. The course has a traditional design that features wide, gently undulating fairways and large, well manicured greens. It's not an overly challenging course but there are some holes that will make you think and you'll find that accuracy and a good strategy are both generously rewarded. The wide-openness of the front nine provides a gentle start to the golf course while the tighter back mine presents greater challenges. It's a good round for learning beginners and more advanced golfers will find it to be a fun, quick round for an affordable price.

Links at Victoria
The last time I've played here was 3 years ago because of the fairway condition so I took some friends out to give it another shot this time it was still bad as it was, such a beautiful laid out course and I hate to see a local course in this condition,I'm not sure what's going on with the fairway but the green is in imaculant condition only if they can put some effort on the fairway
You get what you pay for
Sure, the pace of play is slow. Holes are pretty much straight forward. Minimal elevation changes and greens are predictable. But, it's golf. And, it's practical golf. There are some long holes (par fours 400+ yards# and then there are some short holes #reachable par fives). This is a ho hum course, but it's golf and it's LA golf. And, for the price, this course is a pretty good value.
Great victory at Victoria
It was better than what I expected. First time to play there. Facility is outdated but it was great to play.
Fair for the price
The driving range is still under "renovation" yet there's never any work being done on it.
The fairways are patchy with mud spots, but for the price it's ok.
Victoria
Walked the Blues (71.8/123/6804) on 9/17 with Stickboy & RGM2525 in 3H, 50M on their standard afternoon walking rate of $29 on a hot, breezy day. First time I had played here in at least 25 years, always enjoyed the layout.
The tees were decent, mostly level, good coverage with only a few areas of unrepaired divot damage.
The fairways were as advertized in prior reviews, hit and miss. Many had significant, fairly lush areas. However, there were way too many thin or hardpan areas for them to be considered close to good.
Same for the rough. It was often lush near the fairway, then in the areas they were not concentrating as much watering it was thin, weeds or hardpan.
The traps were poor overall. I was in several, seemed like a Palm Springs course in the wind mill section where the fine sand had blown away and there was only hard packed sand left. OK along the fairways for full shots, not so good around the greens however.
Speaking of the greens... they were excellent! Smooth, firm, medium fast with few ball marks. Some of the best greens I have putted on recently. Easily the best part of the course.
The course layout has always been good. The course conditions from tee to green are below average in almost every regard. However, the greens are well above average, they far exceeded expectations.
The customer service from the Pro Shop to the Starter to the Marshall coming by with cold water was excellent. Enjoyed the trip down memory lane as I played here often back in the 1980's when I lived closeby. However, until they get more consistent grass on the fairways, I would only play here on a deal even with excellent greens if I lived closer.
Messed up course, Fantastic Greens
I'm on the fence If I will play this course again. I got a good deal last weekend so I played it for the third time. Once again the greens are fantastic and challenging, these greens will prep you for harder courses. Pretty much every other aspect of the physical course is horrible. I heard something about this course having been built over an old dump.. that may keep the fairway grass from growing properly. More often than not your ball will be on hard dirt in the middle of the fairway...when you go out the started tells you to just pick up your ball an move it to the nearest patch of grass(which is usually still dirt with a few weak blades of grass poking through. This course has potential if they ever figure out why the grass won't grow on the fairway. Give it a shot, bust most people I know wouldn't want to play a course in this condition.
Needs help
Closed driving range was supposed to remodel but it never happened. Fairways are very poor bumpy and hard. Sand traps need repair or at least maintained. Tee boxes need work as well. The greens are probably the only thing that could be considered as good.
Very Patchy
Tee Boxes are in "Ok" condition, The fairways are in bad condition They are very patchy from being dried out. It's "Hard Dirt" patchy like it's that way for a long time. Around the greens and Greens are in good shape.
Keeps improving
If you know the history of Victoria, then it's easy to see that while it's far from pristine, it's in the best shape maybe in decades. Greens are tops.
Greatly Improved
If you have not given this place a chance in a while, Do. It is so much better now. Now its mostly grass with some bare spots. Before It was mostly bare spots with very few patches of green. You will Like the improvement.
This course has good pace.
I enjoyed the play with good pace. The green was acceptable quality. Some fairways had dirt but worth of mone overall.
Better than expected
I'd read some reviews, looked at some photos & thought I had made a mistake.
I was pleasantly surprised, the course was in pretty good shape. Sure there we a few areas that they are working on but all in all I was pleased with the condition.
Thanks for your positive review, Smarty101. Victoria's staff is pleased that you were pleasantly surprised! The photos on most of our review sites are out dated and we have made great progress with the fairway seeding since it began in April. Conditions will continue to improve as we move forward.
Solid course
Internet was down when i arrived. Had to go old school and use an old cc recipient thing. Overall good rate for a solid course. Pretty laid back for a Thursday. I'll come back again. Hitting range is under construction.
Course is Under Construction
Lesson Learned: Always call the course to get the course-conditions BEFORE booking a round of golf especially on courses you’re unfamiliar with OR have not visited in a while (I know…this should be a “No-Duh”).
I had been waiting for a deal on GolfNow to play The Links at Victoria since I had not played it in several years. Got a Saturday Tee Time (11:30am) with Cart for $38.00 which seemed like a decent fee (but, still a lot when you're in a 'Job Transition' phase).
Something didn't seem quite right when I pulled into a parking lot that had suspiciously few cars for a weekend.
I was informed when I checked-in of the double-whammy:
1) Greens were JUST aerated (punched & sanded)
2) Driving Range was under-construction & closed
Unfortunate for me, those details were not listed for the course during my GolfNow booking.
Besides the aerated greens, there were many roped-off locations throughout the fairways--more than I've ever seen on any course in 30-years (at least they are trying to make improvements).
Also, there were many fairways with some significant bare dirt spots (not roped-off). On the first hole I drew up alongside another golfer playing in the opposite direction. I glanced over to see that his ball came to rest a few yards from mine . . . in a grassless, section of mud (over-watering?).
On the bright side, the pace-of-play was EXCELLENT (for good reason), especially for a weekend: It was like a Ghost Town--I rarely saw another golfer throughout my round. I was free to play at a very comfortable pace and, even play two balls on a couple of occasions. I did eventually catch up to a foursome on the 16th hole.
Btw--It seemed a bit unfair as I went into the Pro Shop [before and after my round] and hear the Starter give a reduced prices to golfers who had not booked through GolfNow. Clearly the Starter had more leeway to make fee adjustments for those golfers who had not prepaid like me. It was the right thing to do for sure. I just wish I would have had the opportunity to benefit from this Customer Service gesture.
When all of the work is complete, it should be a nice venue.
The course has horrible fairways
no good no good, period.there is not much to talk about .That is how bad it was.
Work in progress
Still working on the fairways and two holes were closed. Greens were actually pretty true this early but they are punching in May.
Take a tip from skylinks in LBC, punch the back and pin the front and reverse after they heal, Beat idea and responsible green keeping ever.
Longest game ever
Tee time was 9:45am, 4 of us all checked in about an hour prior. Man at desk told us that they are running 30 mins or so behind, and said he will call us when we're up. 10:40 comes around, we find out that the man who was supposed to call us left for the day and didn't relay the message. So, we get on the tee at like 10:50.
Got stuck behind a group of 5 with push carts. First 6 holes, couldnt even take the cart off the cart path, and the entire fairway was muddy. When we finished it was 4pm. Probably will not be going again.
Waste of a whole day
I have given this course multiple tries and the most recent one solidified that I will never be back to this course. Yes the greens are in very good shape for a muni but the fairways are non existent. But the course conditions are not the reason for why I won't be back.
Each round I have played out here has been over 5 hours, and while yes you do have to expect slower rounds at public courses you do also expect that the marshals actually care. There are multiple marshals driving around who don't do anything. When you point out that groups are multiple holes behind their responses are just to throw their hands in the air like there is nothing they can do about it.
But like I said this last round made up my mind that they won't see me again. Our tee time was 9:07am, we went to check in and they said they were 20 minutes behind. Okay, that can happen I guess so we waited our turn. We did not tee off until just after 10:00am. A course should never be an hour behind on their morning tee times. When we were in the pro shop someone radioed to the front desk saying that there was a group 3 holes behind!! But do you think they moved that group forward to make sure they stayed close to on time? Nope! We had two groups in front of us just quit because the group in front of them was so many holes behind. This should never happen when your paying $50 for a round. Maybe if this course was no more than $25-30 it could be acceptable. This course is grossly mismanaged.
So the whole day took 6 1/2 hours from what our original tee time was to when we finally finished.
The one high note is the guy who does the cooking in the snack shop, the food is really good here. The cook should be hired to run the whole place, he seems to be the only one who knows what he is doing.
James,
The remodel has not happened YET. The course is finalizing agreements for the remodel with the County, and will begin construction again in October. As for the Fairways that "are very poor bumpy and hard", Victoria is solving that issue today. A new smaller version of the Greenway Golf Overplanter has arrived today and will be fixing the patches of fairway that did not catch when we had the larger Overplanter machine. This process converted our fairways from 30-40% coverage to 70-80% coverage. The machine was very large and did not catch every spot and that is why we are bringing in a smaller version to do the patch work.
The sand traps will be addressed when we complete our work with the new driving range and fairway coverage is complete.
Thank you for your input!
