Victoria Golf Course
About
The Links at Victoria Golf Course has a convenient location in Carson that is easily accessible from the South Bay, downtown Los Angeles, or Orange County. William Bell, the mastermind who crafted the Torrey Pines courses, also designed the Links at Victoria. The course has a traditional design that features wide, gently undulating fairways and large, well manicured greens. It's not an overly challenging course but there are some holes that will make you think and you'll find that accuracy and a good strategy are both generously rewarded. The wide-openness of the front nine provides a gentle start to the golf course while the tighter back mine presents greater challenges. It's a good round for learning beginners and more advanced golfers will find it to be a fun, quick round for an affordable price.

Mostly dirt, nice greens! Photo submitted by LeeDaBord on 08/31/2013
Horrible condition of fairways
This course has absolutely horrendous fairways. On every hole you will find yourself hitting of dirt in many areas instead of grass. If they would fix the fairways it would be a cool course but for the money it's not worth it.
Not a good course.
The course is in terrible shape, there was little grass. The greens were OK. Flat, dry, and bald overall.
Pace of play was good, and staff was very friendly.
Poor
Fairways hard pack, very little grass. Bunkers solid, no sand. Ground squirrels holes excessive.
Would not book again or recommend to anyone.
The new general manager is making things very uncomfortable in her efforts to make players do not want to play at this course.
I have been playing at this course for a very long time now. However resent experience with the new general manager makes not playing at this course until she is gone. She is very ugly in her approach and demanding that everyone must ride with another golfer when they are not buisy.
Easy to get on, terrible fairway conditions, good greens.
It's well known in L.A. area that Victoria's fairways are terrible, but their greens are usually in very good shape. The $21 GolfNow offering was a good deal for this course if you maintain a "golf is golf" attitude and don't expect a lush private club conditions. The starter in the pro shop (first name initial "A") need to be better organized. I checked in 30 minutes before my tee time and was told to wait until he called me back. While waiting, I saw that the course was not busy at all, and watched several twosomes and threesomes tee off. The starter was not paying any attention to the fact the first tee was open, and had I not gone back into the pro shop to check, the 11:30 foursome would have been sent out before me! Ended up going out with another single who was already on the tee and who happened to have walked on after I had first checked in...!
Sad
I don't normally write reviews but this course deserves one.
It is depressing to see what passes for a golf course these days. The Links at Victoria is a dirt road with golf holes on it. (I should have taken pictures)This place definitely needs to be worked on. There is more dirt than grass in some of the fairways. I felt really bad for the staff working there, because I know the condition of the course is not their fault. This has BAD MANAGEMENT written all over it.
Failure!
Course is nice but...
Need a lot of maintenance and work . Nice and fast greens.
May be in the Summer it will get in better shape?
THIS COURSE IS IN VERY BAD SHAPE!!!!!
THIS COURSE IS IN NEED OF ALOT OF CARE. THE TEE BOXES ARE NOT LEVELED AND THE GRASS ARE UGLY. THE WHOLE COURSE'S FAIRWAYS ARE NOTHING BUT HARD DIRT.
good deal on golfnow
This is Victoria, so yes, there are some bare spots in the fairway. But with a good deal on GolfNow, I would play this course again. The greens are in great shape as usual. The layout is interesting.
The day I played, it was unusually crowded, but we still finished in under 5 hours.
The course is very forgiving
Links is great I was able to get my longest drive of 310 yards. 25 yards longer than my previous yardage.
Nice greens!
A bit pricey for a round....Fairways are mostly hardpan dirt, you would bode well to find some grass patches to hit your approach to the green.
Shame on American golf for not trying....Also this course should let folks know, who book on line,or haven't played here before, let them know the conditon of the course.
Dirt Fairways - use only for practice.
Unfortunately this might be the worst course in L.A. The fairways are dirt (built on an old landfill so it might be hopeless). I went knowing this and was always moving my ball to any grass. Greens and area around the greens are fair. Sand traps are hard packed. I teed off at 11 am on a Sunday and played the front nine in 1:40 with one other. On the back I had a 4-some in front so I practiced chipping and putting once I got to the green. Done in 4 hours. Paid $22 on Golfnow with cart- about fair. Go for practice and pay little. For golf with friends go elsewhere. Nice people work there.
Good value.
Good layout, excellent greens, fairways look like Hiroshima after the bomb.
Course not in great shape
Course Fairway conditions were poor. Not a lot of grass. You would see hardened mud in the middle of most fairways. MIght as well hit off the cart path. Greens were in decent condition.
Course not overly crowded. Pace moving steadily.
Great driving range and practice area.
This course has fantastic greens
The course is lacking on fairway grass, but the layout and greens make up for that. Definitly will play there again.
Careful of OB... and the fairway as well...
The Links at Victoria would be a nice easy course if there were more grass and fewer gopher holes. It's understandable to have a bad lie when you have an errant drive, but to have to hit off rock-hard dirt from the middle of the fairway half of the time is unnacceptable.
just needs to grow grass on the fairways
the manager was the best i have encountered at any golf course
good practice areas
greens were the best in shape
...Same as it ever was
I have been playing Victoria since 1974, when I was a sophomore in high school. Nothing has changed. The layout is fun. It is more or less wide-open with few trees and big greens. The challenge of this links-style course comes from its length and the wind, which blows much harder in the afternoon. The greens were very good when I played. They were smooth with very few ball marks. The tee boxes are as good or better than most of the L.A. county munis. The problem on this course is, and always has been, that grass will not grow on large areas of the fairways and rough ... and that's kind of important. I don't usually believe in "winter rules", but there are so many distressed areas in the fairways that this is the one course where I make an exception. That being said, I have always felt that many golfers have, over the years, used the poor fairway conditions as an excuse to bash Victoria. The fact is, its very tough to close out a good round at Victoria, especially when the wind is blowing in the afternoon. The closing holes (13-18) can be very tough. I think many golfers complain about Victoria as much because of its difficulty as the poor conditions. If you know what you're getting into, Victoria can be a lot of fun and very challenging, even though some of the fairways look like the surface of the moon.
Had fun on Xmas
Played after some wet weather on Xmas eve. Golfnow mistakenly had a weekday rate posted for Xmas, and the starter honored it. Yes, some of the fairways are complete dirt tracks, but my buddies and I have agreed to move the ball to the nearest grass if you end up on dirt in the fairway.
The main positives are that it's pretty cheap and you can almost always find a morning tee time at the last second. Playing on Xmas, we finished in less than 4 hours as a threesome that became a foursome near the end. Oh, and having wet greens means you can see where everyone else's putts went; it was better than having a caddy!
Tip: Seeing how many open tee times there are for the course on it's own website and this one will give you a sense of how long your round will take. This course attracts hacks.
A great layout, but beware...
This course is in desperate need of some TLC. I've never been on a course with worse fairways, and some of the "fairway dirt" is so dry and hard, it's cracking! After several of my best drives, I had to move the ball out of the center of the fairway to the fringes, just because that's where there was some grass to hit off of, and who wants to damage their clubs, right? Also, the bunkers are hard and thin... there wasn't enough soft sand (.5"-1" at most) for me to get underneath the ball with a sand wedge -- I wound up having to try to lift the ball out with a pitching wedge.
It's really a shame, because with the interesting layout and challenging greens, this could be a highly enjoyable course. But now, as it is, it's not worth paying money for. Even the GolfNow discounted rates.
Also, the staff there is kind of clueless -- the starter acted like he was in a big hurry to rush me out onto the course, 25 minutes before my scheduled tee time... then he pulled me out of a threesome and made my group a fivesome (with a threesome trailing us). This course would benefit greatly from a new management company that's willing to put some money into improvements.
