Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

Another round...
Course was in good shape. Greens were hard and very fast. Play was a bit slow, but expected that for a Sunday.
Decent value
Always liked the course layout and scenery. Greens slow and bumpy.
Good course for the average player
The course was in overall good shape. The course is fairly hard throughout the playing surface and has some bare spots under trees. The greens and fairways are in good shape and play smooth.
Good course
Good course for the price. The greens were in good shape even after a turential downpour the night before.
This course was not very challenging, but a great place to work on your game.
I enjoyed this course and it presented some unusually easy challenges, but overall it was a good course to work on your game.
1st Time at Stumpy
Had an excellent first experience and will return.
For 20 bucks...
I got a great deal through golfnow.com to play during prime hours for 20 bucks with a cart. Course was in decent shape. Greens were very hard, particularly on the front 9. I'd play again but not for more than 30.
Stumpy Lake
Not a very difficult course to play but for one reason or another could not find my ball in a very open area. Ground was hard packed and greens needed work on them as there are patches here and there. Overall I played the course two times that day once at 8:45am and the other start was at 1:45pm. The afternoon was hot but the play was much faster in pace overall as there was few players on the ground. People very friendly and there are no marshals in sight.
Barry's review
Have played many times. Greens were slow as usual.
Great course!
This wasn't the first time I've played this course, I've enjoyed playing there every time I've booked a tee time there. Would highly recommend this course, great layout for the price.
Rude marshals.
Just as they have always been known to be; the marshal on duty lacked the basic understanding of customer service. It is likely that he is just a grumpy old man with very poor communication skills. No need for details as you have heard this many times and for years. That's why we call it Gumpy Lakes. BTW, Mr Marshal l am not easily intimidate or bullied as I was as a young man and I hope you sensed that. Good course and I always enjoy playing off and on for the last 30 years.
Play Stumpy Now
We thoroughly enjoyed our play at Stumpy Lake. The course was in good shape after a rough winter but beginning to show that spring is doing it's magic. Delightful setting.
Good value
The discount on Golfnow.com made it well worth the cost even though I would consider playing there regardless but I look for the bargains on Golfnow.
Great Find
I would play here again in a heartbeat. Staff was very pleasant, even to a stranger like me. The course seemed to play longer than it measured, or it could just be me getting older. The day I played followed bad weather ( a "Cart Path Only" day ), so I can't really comment on the normal condition there, nor did I sample the cuisine. Played eighteen holes and had a good time despite a soggy course. Went back two days later, course was a little drier, and I enjoyed myself again.
Good value
Parkland style course. Best thing is no houses. Was still a little wet, but good value for the money.
Disappointment
On this date the course conditions on the fairways due to a bad past winter with snow and rain was horrible. Cart path only thru-out the course and muddy conditions and standing water to wade thru to play the ball. I must say that the greens were in fairly good shape and the bunkers were well maintained. I like the location and the serenity and the nature surroundings although it's not the fault of any maintenance neglect but just natures bad season that caused these kind of conditions. If it ever dries up I would like to play there again in the future. Most of the ratings would be totally different with better conditions. Bad timing for me at this time.
Liked The Course Layout
Really liked the course layout but unfortunately it came after some heavy rains and the course had a lot of casual water. Nice facility and staff.
Soggy
Stumpy was a little wetter than anticipated. I play here a lot. Greens were aerated and top dressed, probably within the last week. In 2 weeks they will be good. This track is in my top 3 of southside Hamton Roads public golf courses.
Watering Hole
Never play there when its wet. Course was nice. Greens nice. Fairways nice. Just to wet. But overall thats on me not them.
Golfing
Outstanding Value! Because there has been many showers. We had to stay on cart path; which slowed
us down.
