Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

Gorgeous view of Stumpy Lake Photo submitted by Realestateangels on 11/06/2014
Stumpy - $39 is a fair price, just.
So much potential but lacking polish
Greens were ok but some holes lookkwd very patchy
Some tee boxes were sand boxes and desperately need attention
Good carts
Pace of play could have been better managed.
No hot food ready at the turn :(
A Fair Neighborhood Course
OK course if others not available. Driving range balls are old and there's too much sand in soil. Course Tees and greens are not in good shape. Clubhouse and grill are kept clean. Grill and food are fast and good.
Great value in Virginia Beach
Great value. Friendly helpful staff. Food was a good value. Nice course.
Good Course
A unique golfing experience that has both its highs and lows. One notable feature is the tee boxes, which are among the roughest in the area and unfortunately littered with broken tees. This can be a bit challenging for golfers looking for a clean and consistent start to their holes.
The fairways, on the other hand, are quite good, providing a decent playing surface that allows for solid ball striking. The greens are a highlight, featuring nice speed with mild bumps and some wear; however, they still offer quality putting conditions overall.
One of the standout aspects of the course is the sand bunkers. They are well-maintained and filled with quality sand, making them a rewarding challenge rather than a frustration. Additionally, the staff are exceptionally friendly and welcoming, which adds to the overall experience.
As a bonus, if you're someone who likes to hunt for lost golf balls, you'll find plenty in the tree lines and water bank areas throughout the course.
Overall, Stumpy Lake has potential and charm, but improvements to the tee boxes would significantly enhance the experience. With a laid-back atmosphere, friendly staff, and a few challenges to keep things interesting, it's worth a round for those in the area.
Very disappointed.
I have played this course several times and this was the worst experience ever. We had a 1141am tee time and we teed off around 1230.I felt like we should have been told in advance that they were behind. There was no pace of play. It took 3 hours to play the first 9 holes. Some of the greens are not well maintained and some of the tee boxes are hard to place your tees. I love the track but the condion and very slow play was very disappointing. For $51, I expected more than what was offered. I am so disappointed 😞
Disappointed
I grew up on this golf course, the other week me and a couple buddies came out to play 9 as the last group of the day, keep in mind none of us had been here for a few years and figured it was all the same. Nope, greens are ran down, trees are overgrown, staff not so friendly, and overall just not the experience I once remember, also fire ur cart guy he’s an Ahole……
Not worth the money
I’m not a pro by any means, and this is my first review. I hate to admit it but I’ve played plenty of other courses that were good and didn’t write reviews.
Anyway, I was really disappointed with this course. Tee times were grouped 3 minutes apart from each other, we got to the first hole 5 minutes early and there was a line of at least 4 groups ahead of us. Pace of play was horrible.. but what can you expect with Tee times stacked on top of each other. We had a three man group and a random that joined us but one of our guys had to leave after 9 so when he paid he grabbed a cart. Well immediately after getting to the first hole the marshal stopped him and literally made him get out and ride with the random that we were paired with, now normally not an issue but like I said our buddy had to leave early. So when he asked the marshal if he would give him a ride back when he had to leave he said “nope”.
While we were waiting to tee off on the third hole another marshal (at least I think it was a different one) came up and told us to not let the group behind us catch us. I could have taken this out of context from already not being happy about the conditions or the amount of time it took us to get through two holes, but regardless this felt out of line. In the same hole he came flying up behind us and told us to not drive the cart in the woods! We were off the cart path maybe 10 feet near the wood line, but nowhere near the woods!
Onto the tee boxes. I will let my pictures speak for themselves. But I didn’t get a picture of the greens. They were awful as well. The only good thing about this place were the ladies working the bar inside. They were great, but this place is not worth the almost $50 we payed to play!
