Avila Beach Golf Resort

About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Avila golf course
Whom ever is maintaining the grounds , I feel doesn’t have any regard for the course, The greens aren’t even maintained, so sad cuz it’s a beautiful area!!
Avila
I’ll understand the grass and green issues, but if y’all could just clean up the duck poop more frequently then I’d gladly recommend this course to everyone I know. Love the tee boxes from hole 10 and 18.
Greens really getting worse
Playing in July generally means more crowds and course conditions dry out. We played here a month ago and greens were decent for the most part. But now burrowing critters have really affected the back 9 and lots of bumpy spots also. Other courses in the area are faring much better. Driving range is pretty poor.
Pace of play very very slow for a Friday morning. 5 somes didn’t help. Enjoy the weather and deer walking by. Worth it only if you get a great rate
Shameful
Pros: My rating is based on three factors: Very nice layout. Inexpensive. Avila beach has the best golf weather on the Central coast north of Santa Barbara.
Cons: It is a shame the owner could care less about the course. Cart pads that will rattle the fillings out of your teeth. Greens consisting of various species of multicolored grasses, both living and dead, and play like you’re putting on your grandmother’s quilt. Tee boxes that feel like you are standing on a freshly plowed field. Fairways that are a mixture of dead and dying crab grass, clover, and ground squirrel habitat. Sand traps that have not been refreshed in many, many years with "sand" that only exists in your imagination.
Course in bad shape and slow pace of play.
Course conditions have really gone down hill. Dead fairways, unkept sand, and barely playable greens. Green fees are still pretty high though. Seems like the only goal they have is making money by jamming in as many golfers as possible.
Course maintenance?
How about it? Anybody actually work on the course? Place is falling apart.
Not fun!
I played here a year ago and had a great experience. Yesterday was not. Fairways were bare. Greens were bumpy.. Carts dirty. Cart paths were dangerous. Drove from Fresno and wish I had not. Thankfully, we stayed two days and played at Cypress Ridge which was a great experience. Only bright spot was the food at Mulligans.
What Happened?
I was hoping other's reviews were just being overly critical, but sadly, I was wrong....".
I played here a few years ago, as a beginner, and found the course to be very challenging, At that time course conditions were "very good", the amenities were nice, and the staff were helpful and friendly. The latter two are still true - the staff is still great, and the amenities fine!
I get out pretty much weekly now, and after a few years of "practice", I had the opportunity to play here again. While I may have become a little better golfer, this course has not faired as well.
The condition of the course itself has changed radically, and not for the better. It was not at all as I remembered it to be! Course conditions varied radically from hole to hole - from tee box, to fairway to the greens. Conditions were "consistently inconsistent" on each hole -- if that makes any sense. Burned up fairways, unmaintained and bare greens, but there is a thriving gopher population!
My hope was that this really nice venue would be half a nice as I remember it to be, and I was wrong. Its sad, because the course layout is fun, and its located in a truly beautiful area!
Good layout, beautiful area, but…
Nice people work at course with a very limited maintenance budget and it showed... diseased greens, bare fairways, and lots of gopher holes/mounds. When we got to first par three, there were 3 groups on tee box waiting to hit. After that it sped up but was a 5 plus hour round.
I think it’s fine if you’re out with friends having a few laughs and not looking for a premium golf experience. Good spot to hang out after the round.
Not the same as it was in decades past
Hadn’t played here in over 10 years. Let’s just say that’s also probably
The last time This course had any proper maintenance. Staff are very friendly, which was the only plus of this day. Driving range is embarrassing, mats are ripped, range balls ancient and you’re basically hitting into a dirt cliff. Putting green is not comparable to anything you see on course, it is actually maintained. Un-mowed fairways, but probably not watered so just crops of weeds, hard and no even lies so even a perfect shot will run off sideways or not have a proper lie for the next shot. Greens all have about 3-4 different types of grass all in various stages of growth, so don’t try to judge distance or slope, you’ll be wrong. Pace of play was horrendous, it took us over 3 hours to finish 8 holes, by 10 there was a 4 group backup just to tee off so we ended up leaving. Restaurant and views are great, golf
Course seems like they are trying to make it fail or just an after thought. Very sad considering how it used to be.
Avila Beach
This course could be one of the best courses in the area, however it is not well kept. The driving range was dirt; fairways weren’t green and the greens were inconsistent. The location, clubhouse, food choices, etc. were great. There is also a nice hotel in the area. However, this place needs some TLC! I hope they take this feedback seriously because for all the people who stay at Flying Flags, the hotels or rent a vacation place, they could charge more and get more people to play there if if was cared for a lot better!
Fun & Challenging
This is a great golf course, for all levels of play
