Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Sticks and dirt
Sorry to post poor review. Played this course 20 years ago and it was in much better shape.. Pro shop charged me for range balls. They had run out. Starter was clueless. I was able to join twosome on tee. Bar at turn was unattended. Greens all different Some recently punched and awful, some were just bad. No grass in fairways. Sorry for locals.
Problems on going
Greens punched and with dark areas of mildew or fungus ? Extremely slow play due to 40 person junior golf tournament. Manager did not allow me to play ahead of the tournament group even though there was a 2 or 3 hole vacancy ahead of the tournament players. No Marshall on the course so group of 5 also playing in front of me.
Disappointed
This could be a really nice course if some effort and $ were applied.
Dry course conditions.
Lots of brown and even dirt patches. Bunkers were hard packed . Some greens good, some not so good. Tough closures to play without local knowledge. The tee boxes were hard to find and lots of blind shots.
Beautiful and full of slopes and interesting hole locations!
I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to have a slight challenge within their course play while having the beach literally at the pro shop. The course definitely needs a cart use and there are a lot fo blind corners and gully dips that don't have water but you don't realize that til after you hit. The 10th tee is directly over water which is flowing into the ocean which is neat. Overall, I'd highly recommend this course and look forward to going back again next year!
A lot of fun.
The course has a lot of contour which challenges you to play your best shots. If you are careful you can do well.
Expected Nicer
No assist with clubs. Some holes not marked well, which made it rough for us who had not played it before. Check in not near carts or first hole., which made check in confusing. Course fairways used natural terrain which caused many shots to veer widely...t hard to always follow where it ended up.
Avila GC good!
Solid course. GolfNow got me a great rate. Will play again.
Beauty and a fun place to play!
I found this spot over near SLO on vacation and upon getting there; you realize you are literally right next to Avila Beach, where you can lounge after playing next to their tee shop with an open seating area to enjoy the ocean breeze and sunshine. The course was well-maintained on the greens, a little rough at times on the fairway with a lot of sloping fairways and dry creek beds to lose balls. Overall, I'd highly recommend giving it a try!
Tim
Last Saturday seem to be overbooked with two different tournaments going and very slow players ahead of us it was agonizing
Perfect Friday round at a great price!
I caught a "hot deal" through golf now and headed to course to verify availability of rental clubs... Not only did I find rental clubs,, I was able to head out early and thoroughly enjoyed the challenging front nine and the round as a whole. Considering the dry conditions in CA at this time, the course was in pretty good shape and played shorter due to the extra roll on the fairways.
Great layout
The course has two very different front and back nines, with lots of variety. The fairway conditions are a bit rough, but the greens are smooth and true. The course, traps and fairways, could use some attention, but if you’re willing to overlook the lack of investment the course has a challenging and varied layout. Pace of play was great, 4 hours on a Saturday afternoon.
Avila
Have played here many times in the past but not for 5-6 years. Still in good shape. Traps need work but that’s not unusual today. Considering the drought the course looked good
My favorite local course
I play this course a couple of times each month and always have a good time. The staff is great and things are, in general, fun and the play is smooth running. Each time I review however, I must emphasize that the bunkers really need some TLC. The surface is just slightly softer than most hiking trails. If this issue is addressed I would give them 5 stars every time I play.
