Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Love this course!
Everything about Avila Beach is wonderful, especially when the weather is good. This is the second time I have played here and we really enjoyed ourselves. That said, I am disappointed in the state of the bunkers; they are little more than base rock with a light layer of sand in them. Perhaps it is intentional but it seems like they would offer so much more of a challenge if they had sand in them. Other than that critique (fortunately, I was not in them much), I loved playing here and look forward to returning.
Consider it a target golf course.
Had a very pleasant experience playing the course. Narrow fairways with slope made it a challenge. But that can only be expected with the amount of realistate the designer had to work with. The staff is very friendly and we had a great lunch at Mulligan's bar and grill.
lousy course condition
Tees very uneven and ruff. Course conditon are not good, very little maintenance shown.
Fun & Challenging Course
This was my first time on this course. It was definitely challenging and fun. The only concern I have would be that the course could be better maintained. Signs were sometimes missing, or even hanging upside down in one case. Tees were not clearly marked at each hole and were sometimes difficult to find altogether. Some bunkers were down to base dirt and devoid of sand. These issues did not keep us from having fun but could simply help to improve the game. We will definitely be back.
Course not in good condition
Course needs some real maintenance - tee boxes are in really bad shape, sand bunkers need some real sand, fairways require maintenance and greens are bumpy. Overall, below average and not worth playing. I was visiting the area and would not have played if I knew the course conditions.
Poor condition
The course is in very poor condition. Hacked up and uneven tee boxes. Poorly maintained cart paths. Patchy grass on the fairways with clumps of clover and other weeds. No sand in the traps. Greens are decent. Only play if you get it on Golf Now for $14. Good place for a drink Thur. thru Sun. 5-7pm when they have music outside overlooking the water.
Good value
1 o’clock tee time. Let a couple of singles play through our group then had no one on us the entire round. The course was in decent shape except the bunkers. The were hard as a dirt road. They really lacked enough sand to make them playable. Everything was as expected or above considering the rate we paid.
Not what we thought
Layout was strange. Fairways overrun--at times couldn't find the ball as it was not maintained. Hard sand bunkers. Tee box need repair. Will not return. Between this and Blacklake, I'd go to latter.
Fun course
I enjoy playing this course… it is very fun and challenging
There are a lot of different looks
Disappointing
Saw pics of the course and it looks good. For the price the course was in poor shape. Several of the tee boxes were in very poor condition. Basically un mowed and cow pasture with clumps and uneven, etc. I found the course to be interesting but not for the price. Also the web site said that the cart was included at one point and then when checking out it was walking only. so I paid extra for the cart. We checked in and the person in the clubhouse said that since there were no golfers in front of us, between 12 and 1, that we could tee off when ready. We got to the starter and he told us we would have to wait until 1 since that was the twilight rate but that we could go back and pay extra for the difference. Very unpleasant person. I will look for another course whenever I am in the area. Also the full rate is very high for the quality of the course.
Burrito
A course that's a 5 out of 10. Staff was nice, course is just ok, and traps are garbage. Greens are really quick and break to the ocean.
Cow Pasture with horrible pace of play
I’m not one to bash courses but this only seems fitting. Picture of course is definitely not current or close to true. I jokingly call it a cow pasture but I think a Billy Goat would starve at this course. The staff was super friendly but the course was overbooked with very slow playing golfers. Someone needed to either space the times out better or have a ranger out to increase pace of play. Driving range was a joke, hey hit balls into the side of this mountain.
On to the good things. Staff was super nice, in all aspects. The restaurant at the turn and the scenery of the ocean was super cool. But I was there for golf and this place is not a place for that. Sadly this was not a place I would recommend to others.
Interesting layout, the is in poor condition
The course has an interesting layout. Greens are pretty tiny but in fair shape.
Fairway is in poor condition. Sand in the bunkers is hard, closer to dirt than sand. A few bunkers were going through a complete repair and were not available for play. Goose craps are everywhere.
After 12:00, the course is fully booked due to a deep discount. If you want to play in peace and quiet, pay a few bucks more to play regular tee times.
