Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Local
Play got really slow, there was a threesome and then a single player walking behind them. He would take several putts on the green until they were off the next T and we had to just sit there and wait for him....Tim
Was it always this poor?
I've played here several times, but not for a while. The greens were recently punched, so it's not fair to judge them for quality. That said, with the mottled grass, anything outside of a couple of feet was hit and hope Good putts may not be rewarded The tee boxes were very uneven and poorly maintained. The sand traps were just hard dirt and rocks. And the fairways were fair--not good, but not poor.
Nice coarse to play good layout fun and challenging , just the only thing was pace of play we were stacked on top of other players, guy behind us kept hitting on us. Slow day moving along. Lots of wild life on the course too. Was cool..
Worst course we have ever played
The course is in horrible condition. All the greens have fungus, uneven, bumpy and barely playable. Sand traps are gravel and mud end unplayable. They punched the greens and left the plugs on the fringes of every green. The golf carts are filthy. The holes have not been changed for at least two weeks. The layout is is funky at best. We are experienced golfers who have played over 100 courses. We never played a course that was so poorly maintained .
The course was crowed, there was no Marshall to speak up play and it took us 5 3/4 hrs.to finish.
To add insult to injury, the weekday rate was $85. Per person and no beverage service on the courses
Avoid this course .
Nice challenging Course - great value for money
A challenging 18 hole course where the front 9 and back 9 have different layouts and challenges. Water and natural hill contours used to good effect. A very enjoyable course to play.
Pretty dry.
The course was very challenging for a first play. Several holes require laying up off the tees due to sharp doglegs. The course was pretty dry. Greens were hard and didn’t hold. Sand traps were hard packed.
Gone to the Dogs
This course (which has so much potential due to its layout) was never in great condition (probably because they've always known that people will come no matter what due to tourism), but over the last couple years, they've really let it go. Played twice in the past 4 months (including just yesterday) and the issues include: greens in poor shape, potholes on the cart paths, overgrown weeds 1 foot from the fairway, half dead grass on the fairways and torn up tee boxes.
This ultimately rests with ownership (and not the employees who are welcoming) because it's clear they have not invested in the upkeep of the course AT ALL. Really disappointing.
Wow, Wow, Wow and not in a good way!
My sons took me for a round here for my birthday. I have played the course many times in the past and always had a blast. BUT it has been many years since I have been there. Wow, Wow, Wow. What a complete disappointment . Wanted to hit balls at the range to start. Could only get two med buckets since no one had cleaned the range. Hitting mats in terrible shape. Squirrels all over the place. The front nine was fun to play as long as you didn’t hit any sand- sorry dirt traps. No rakes because you left no foot prints. The players on the course were not seasoned players. I had a dad and his adult son hit in to our group twice. The cart paths were dangerous to drive on. Heaving, potholes. Back nine we had bicyclist and pedestrians riding and walking thru course of play. I had a homeless man and daughter who walked in front of me on tee box at hole 11 as I was swinging my driver.
And at 89.00 per player this was not cheap. Will NEVER play here again and will NEVER recommend to anyone unless change of ownership.
Priceyyyyy
We get it, you’re by the Pacific Ocean and call yourself a “golf resort”. ~$70 to walk 18 on a Monday is wild. I love this course at twilight or a good deal through golf now. I’ve probably played it 20+ times and never once have felt it was a $70 value. If you can, you’re better off driving down to nipomo and playing cypress ridge. Cheaper, nicer but is a step up in difficulty.
Again, Avila is fun. It’s a nice layout with some fun holes. Always in decent shape. Just not worth what they charge at full price.
