Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Great value
Course was I'm fine shape. Pace of play was fine for myself and my wife. More visible markers on 100 and 150 yard distances would be helpful. I look forward to playing here again.
Good course ... Watch out for newbies ! because there is no Marshall !
Purchased T-time through good folk at GolfNow.com for best rate! Arrived at Course and were given priority as a expected "party" were "no-show".
Pace was hindered because we were behind a pair of "newbies" ...there was no "Marshall" ...we waited at every hole... takes the fun out of the game.
Back again
Love this course and the deal caddy made it very affordable. Accuracy is important or you can make it difficult for yourself.
Overall experience
Greens were in excellent condition. Hole number #2 was closed for renovation, but they had a temp. Hole on the back 9. Bunkers needed more sand, bit shallow with hard surface. Driving range needs some TLC for sure.
Poor design
Cart paths don't match tee and green layout. Conditions were not up to what I thought was suppose to be a high end course, debris and leave on greens.
Inconsistent Greens & Poorly marked yardage
I got a great deal to play online & looked forward to playing here. What we found is that the course is very poorly marked for yardage. Their are sharp dog legs that don't allow you to see the Greens & there is nothing that tells you the yardage (like a 150 yard marker) that is visible from the tee box. On a couple of the holes you have no idea (if you are a first time player here) where the Green is because they are not visible & there is not a course map that gives a good depiction of the layout. Some of them (par 5's) are blind shots from the landing area for your second shot toward the green.
The greens were very inconsistent. The practice green was immaculate & fast. The course greens were coarse and S-L-O-W! It was hard to figure out the speed which was compounded by many of them being on the sides of the beautiful mountains. It looks like they were recently aereated & had not been cut or rolled. One of my bump & runs had sand rooster tails flying up behind the ball as it rolled toward the hole. Determining break & speed for your line was almost impossible if you were not up close. Shoot for the pins & know your ball won't go far with any roll!
There is a ditch between #10 & #18 (that both fairways slope down toward) that is filled with leaves....like the leaves from the course are blown into by the maintenance crew. This slows play as we watched groups in front of us spend lots of time looking for balls. Hole #18 has a VERY narrow fairway; therefore not much room for error when the slope takes your ball toward the ditch. Choose your club & shot carefully!
All in all, with a little more attention to detail the course would be awesome. Very challenging & so peaceful to play with the mountains all around you. Every hole almost feels like a hole by itself.
Course Condition needs serious work.
Fun old golf course, but the condition was truly awful, particularly the fairways, but the greens were not much better. A shame.
Beautiful Course
Avila is one of my favorite courses on the Central Coast - absolutely beautiful early morning or late afternoon. Good mix of different types of holes and easily walkable - esp the back nine. The staff is wonderful!
Great Deal
course was good to play for average or better golfer, wouldn't recommend for beginners. Great if you can find a deal, regular price is too high? I will play again anytime,
beautiful setting
Would help to have distance markers easier to see. Better hole layouts
great layout greens in great shape
Really Enjoyed Course Fun Layout Diverse Holes And Great Greens, First Time Playing Course Really Enjoyed.It.willBe Back For sure
Enjoyable to play at Avila Beach golf resort
The course was in better than average shape. Greens were mostly smooth and ran about 10. Bunkers could use some work but it's not a problem if you stay out of them!
improvements during the last year
greens and tees have been greatly improved. cart paths are in need of improvement
worth playing
Fun course where you need to think instead of just bombing your driver every hole. Has some unusual hole layouts, some may have you wondering where to hit the ball . The ocean is right there and has water features come into play. Greens in good shape. Course has a couple dry spots, but hey, for the price it is a cool course.
First off, Great price from Golfnow..
Played on a Monday at 6:30am. 7/29/13. It is nice to play with someone that has played the course. Myself and another golfer in our group of 3, had never played here either. Kenny, the local gave us suggestion on where we should try to place our ball. It helped out a lot, not that our shots went where we planned. We were done before10:00. they start you on back 9 on Mondays. Front 9 a lot of up and downs, back 9 pretty flat with blind shots.
Nice course. Will play for sure next time up the coast.
A very nice course.
The front nine is much more appealing but very nice course.
A definite course to play
This is one of the courses to play on the central coast! Don't miss out, it ranks with the best of them.
Plays Like a Muni, Not a Resort Course
First of all, I have to say that I enjoyed the course. It had some interesting holes. Be aware that the white tees play much shorter than the yardage on the card indicates, particularly on the front side. If you want more of a challenge, step back to the blue tees.
The course conditions were good. The greens had this odd crosshatch cutting that I had never run across before but they rolled true, if a bit slow.
The staff was non-existant. I got there at 7:20 for an 8:16 start time, and was surprised that there was no bag drop. I have no problem carrying my own bag, but I thought this was a resort
course. As I passed the Bar/Grill, I wanted to get a cup of coffee. No luck, it was closed. I found the pro shop, and there was one person working there who signed me up for a cart and said, "Head out whenever you want". I asked if there was anyone else around to play with, and he said no. I was surprised at this, but that's OK. I hit a few golf balls on the irons-only range (this is not a good practice facility), and looked for the starter at the first hole. There was nobody, so I teed up and off I went.
Great View
This course is very nice! We were there in May and the weather was perfect. The greens well kept and loved some of the challenges.
