Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

improving
Avila Beach appears to be doing some renovating by clearing some overhanging branches, adding a new hole and removing another. I have played Avila over the course of the past eight summers and it always appears to be ready for a final makeover, but doesn't quite make it.
A good value for the money for sure, and the greens were in fine shape.
Avila Beach Golf Course
Course is in much better shape than when I last played it about 6 months ago particularly the green which were rolling really nicely. We would definitely play there again soon.
WORST COURSE I'VE EVER PLAYED!
I play golf 2-3 times a week and enjoy playing New courses. However, Avila Beach Resort needs to stop selling golf green fees and concentrate more on their wedding and catering business. The course's fairways and greens are in deplorable conditions. For first-timers, the course lacks proper signage and scorecard maps. In fact, the course continually changes and alters hole layouts depending on what the resort has planned for the day. The driving range and one of the practice putting greens were closed for a wedding. Also, the area birds have taken over Avila course. Finally, it's a canyon course, with very narrow fairways and a lot of blind approach shots. The only thing decent about this whole experience was the cute blonde bartender at Mulligans. She was courteous and nice. BUT THIS GOLF COURSE IS A NEVER AGAIN
Great location
After reading some of the reviews just keep it mind the time you plan to play and the golf now discount rate. I played at 2:30 for $24.50 with cart and range balls. This course is heavily used in the summer and holidays due to vacationers. It is a very relaxed staff with no Marshall and sometimes a starter. They also often have other events going on, which can be a distraction or annoyance. The reviews of course conditions and layout are pretty accurate. This is a heavily used public course. With that said, I had an enjoyable round in 4 hours . If you are an average golfer or just want to get out on a course in a great location with usually great summer weather, I recommend this course.
Great location
The course is in average condition for a public course. The location at Avila beach and the golf now discount ($24.50 ₩/cart &range balls) makes it a thumbs up recommendation.
Better in the Past, indeed!
I could only play 9 holes because a tournament with a million participants went off the back 9 just as I finally finished the front 9. An impolite greens keeper yelled at us for having 3 carts and wasn't interested in knowing that we were three singles that ended up joining together. Fortunately, we had 3 carts because one guy's cart died. I gave this course one last try. I'll never return. Done. Finito. Ciao.
golf resort?
I've played Avila many times over the years. It's a great location ,however the facility is catering more to music concerts then golf. They re-routed the holes and the restaurant was not run very well. The course was in average condition at best. It just appear that the money is going towards the facility not the golf course. The had temp tee boxes, no yards etc.
Better in the past
Don't golf here during an event. Had to listen to loud horrible rap music for 11 holes. The course was chaotic with people not golfing. The course was not in that great of condition. I was glad to have gotten a Hot Deal on Golfnow or it would not have been worth the cost. It was also very windy. Not the Father's Day I expected.
This course has some interesting holes.
There are some challenging holes due to the layout of the course. The greens were a bit furry and slow for my taste. The driving range was in poor condition. No food/drink cart on the course!....weird for a "resort" course. Still had a good time, but would be more fitting to call this place Avila Beach Golf Course.
Fun Stop Over
From the road the course looked a little shabby compared to So Cal courses but when I realized it was the type of grass, it was fine. The greens were in good shape, albeit preetty slow. Again, type of grass. The driving range was way below av erage with skunky mats to hit from and just unkempt feeling. The course had some very interesting holes which is what made the round quite enjoyable. Give it a try.
Signature hole closed
Where do I start. Called and spoke to General Manager, he stated course was in great shape, decided not to tell me the signature hole was closed. Got there at 630 for a 730 tee time. Golf shop says it opens at 7am. Starter didn't get there until 715. Went to check in at the #1 tee and person says you can go when ever, so people that had a time after us were on the tee before us. Then we find out that the 18th hole is closed for some event. What a joke, what else can be messed up, you would thing the General Manager would have at least been honest....never again.
This coarse has interesting features that iit does.
I enjoyed the first nine holes, although they started us at hole #9. Well when we got to #1 , we waited and waited for groups of people to get there play in. So I almost took a nap if you know what I mean. Bye that time I lost my moment . I will still go back but hopefully it will go a little smoother. thank You! we will come back.
Course Was Still Closed
Tee time was set for 7:05 so we got there at 6:30 to grab a cup of coffee and warm up at the range and found the pro shop, the snack bar/restaurant and range were still closed.
Walked around the pro shop and there was a guy hanging out in the maintenance shed. He said we were early and that he was going to have to give us a dirty cart. The guys who were suppose to clean the carts and get them ready had been drinking the night before instead of getting the carts ready.
Then he said he didn’t have any range balls and for us to go out to the range and just find balls out there and hit those…The sprinklers were still on when we tee'd off.
There were a couple of holes we weren't sure which fairway was ours. The front nine is actually 8 holes and the back nine 10 holes.
A lot of ravines so bring all of your old golf balls and play them instead.
One positive comment; the greens were in pretty good shape.
Amenities lacking
Course was in good condition. Lots of blind shots, cart & scorecard gave no information. Without your own golf rangefinder/GPS it is difficult to know where you want to aim (lots of driving ahead in the cart which slows down play). Carts are really sad; torn seats & like I said, no information. Driving range is a joke. Signage is almost non existent. We had to ask direction to #9 & guessed at a couple other tee box locations. For the price I would expect much more. Like I said, the course itself was in good condition but would not pay full rack rate to play this course.
Great Experience
We played on a Thursday morning as a twosome, with a 7:36 am tee time. We arrived early and the starter in the pro shop let us go early. He was very courteous and customer friendly.
The course was beautiful and in good shape. The pace of play was good. We caught up with a threesome and they let us play through without any problems. We really enjoyed our round.
This course needs some attention
The course is ok. Tee boxes need some help. Greens were good. Fairways good. Driving range has to be the worst I have seen.
Poorly organised but nice course
Booked for 2.15 and gad to wait 40 minutes for a cart. Delays teeing off at first hole. When we got to hole 12 a group of 4 men cut in front of us and held us up for the rest of the course.
S-L-O-W
Course is nice enough and in good shape. Lots of sharp doglegs and blind shots...not a great design. We finally got tired of waiting on every shot when we were on the 13th tee waiting behind another foursome nearly 4 hours into our round. Guessing if we had finished the round it could have taken 6 hours or more...? Too dang slow. Too many people on the course. Ah well...beautiful day.
Great value
Course was I'm fine shape. Pace of play was fine for myself and my wife. More visible markers on 100 and 150 yard distances would be helpful. I look forward to playing here again.
