Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

lovely course
the setting of the course was lovely-lots of nature!
we rode, but found out the course is walkable which is a plus
nice fairways with water hazards and ravines to make things more challenging
Fourth times a charm?
Two reviews blocked (my fault url), one never showed Idk why. Here is a synopsis as the other/s may never appear.
Pace - we played steady, it can get excruciatingly slow.
Course conditions - many areas do need work, not the complete horror story some portray.
Staff - everyone was friendly and helpful for us.
Value - off the rack not competitive with other local courses, deals can be found.
Food - above average for what we ate.
Facilities - the range needs divine intervention, the rest of the facilities are aging but clean.
Overall - average at the right price below average (2 stars) value if paying full weekend rates. The fun layout/design takes thought and the ability to hit shots other than grip and rip. 19 holes are rotated to play 18 depending on events occurring.
Why is this place so controversial?
More reviews than all the courses in the area combined and anything from 1-5 stars all in a short period of time make me wonder if I played the same course.
Overall - 3, this is all subjective. We played relatively fast for a weekend, we enjoyed the deck/view at sunset, we played for a reasonable price, and we are happy to play designs that require shotmaking/strategy/thought not just grip and rip.
Pace - 4, we passed two groups and finished in just over four hours. They finished an hour-ish later as we were cocktailing. The layout/weekenders/etc can result in long times here.
Course conditions - 2, drought yes (excusable), but the 2 comes from the combination of tees being chewed up and/or unleveled and greens that were between very good and very bad depending on the green and/or section of the green. Easy fix; move the tees and pins to good areas while the bad areas recover.
Staff - 4, everyone was friendly and helpful and the marshal expedited our playing through the two groups almost simultaneously.
Value - 2, the off the rack rate is too high for the current conditions and in comparison to other local offerings (Hunter/Cypress/Monarch/Morro/Dairy when it's green). We had a deal from a local paper that included round/cart/lunch that made it a great value for us.
Food - 3, good selection that was well prepared.
Facilities - 2, most everything was average and dated but was clean. The 2 comes from the range which is in need of being euthanized. At this point mats and a net would be an improvement.
After playing and reading other reviews, I asked the pro about a few items. The range/course have improvements planned. The design which currently has nineteen holes is not going to permanently close any holes, but rather will rotate the old 2nd/10th holes in and out as necessary to accommodate weddings/festivals/concerts/etc. The new par three will be the permanent twelfth and the GHIN machine is set up to recognize the different setups. Sorry, no budging on the prices. Always check golfnow.
Tough layout for the first time that you play the course
The course was not very long, but it had several interesting holes. I had to rely on advice from the players that I was paired with who knew the course. Many holes where you would greatly benefit from local knowledge. Greens were fast, but could have been in better shape. Fairways were suffering from the draught that has plagued the area. Too many tee boxes were unlevel and need to be rebuilt. No beverage cart on the course the day that I played,
Avila resort golf course, pretty but not worth the price
Over rated, over priced, too many gimmicky holes, driving range is very substandard, I was very disappointed from the start, I expected a better faculty for what I paid. Even though it's a pretty course I would not recommend it to my friends or fellow golfers. The owner does not have the golfers interest at heart. Staff at the 19th were great, and the only part worthwhile. Last note, the greens were in great shape but doesn't make the entire experience worthwhile, I've played muni's with better facilities and just as good of greens for a fraction of the price.
beautiful course
Fun course with some difficult over water shots. I will definitely be playing this course the next time I'mIin the area.
Avila As Usual
I have nothing bad to say about Avila. I've been playing here for a while now and am always treated with respect, the staff is efficient and the people who play here are terrific. I never mind being paired up when I play here.
Avila Beach course
The course is sadly neglected, and maintenance is lacking. Greens are okay but bunkers are over watered and rutted out. Tee boxes are really chewed up and hard to find a level spot.
I would not play here again, but would choose another course near by.
why is there so much brown turf?
Reg price was $75. GolfNow $55. When I booked it I figured a course by the ocean should have access to plenty of well water that would be used for watering. Maybe there's too much salt in the air. I live in the San Diego area. I expect some brown fairways here. I regularly play courses here that can be played for less than $40 that are surprisingly green.
Course knowledge a must for this course. One hole (14, I think) narrows to only about 10-12 yds. of fairway at about 300 yds. This is not criticism. I really enjoyed that hole. Wish I could play it again.
This course needs local knowledge
My husband and I always golf here when visiting the area,we love the location. The staff is always friendly.
dissapointment!
I've played Avila in the past and found it to be a very enjoyable track...however having played it recently, it's become completely run down and in dire need of a total make-over. The facilities are old, dirty and in need of repair, the on-course restrooms are disgusting, and the carts are extremely dirty and don't operate properly. The course itself was also a disappointment. For some unknown reason, the 10th hole, which was one of the best on the course, was permanently closed and was replaced by an "afterthought" of a par 3 hole. Also by closing the 10th hole, players start the back nine on the 11hole, making it a trek of approximately 15 to 20 minutes for walkers to travers from the 9th green to the 11th tee, causing a very long delay in the pace of play. The rest of the course closely resembled a vacant lot; very little grass except for the fairways, and it appears that the trees and shrubbery haven't been trimmed for years... but in their defense, the greens were good. Definitely a colossal disappointment and not worth the price they are charging for green fees!
Fun course, BUT!
Front and back are completely different. Front, hills, narrow, requiring accuracy. Back, flat and a little more forgiving. Greens were excellent. Could be quite frustrating for high handicap players. Staff very friendly. Could I nick pit? Sure! But had a great day.
Kind of tricky
I was disappointed with the condition of the driving range. The teeing area was very poor as was the landing area. The course was tricky and tough. Overall it was a good experience but the cost was too high.
Avila Beach Needs Work
not a great course. Poor layout...needs a ton of work. Expected better for the money. Will not return.
Pricey
Beautiful location along scenic Avila Beach. A few holes with strange (unorthodox) layouts. Helps to have local course knowledge, especially if you're a longer hitter. Play was slow, over 5 hours. Noticed at least one group playing as 6some. In the future, I will play Morro Bay, few minutes North with more affordable green fees, amazing ocean views and much cooler temperatures.
Course was awesome
I played the course 4 times over the last 2 weeks while on vacation. i play it every year during this time. my scores ranged from 80-84 had a great time. cannot wait till my next trip to the coast.
No ocean views here
We asked the bartender if there were nice ocean views. She replied "Oh yes you see lots of water" Joke was on us... The water you see is an inlet that looks like black water. There is not a single ocean view hole on this golf course. Closest you get is #10 where you see a distant ocean under a bridge. Either # 16 or #18 green (can't remember) had so much bird mess on it we left our balls and didn't putt. Super disgusting. Thought this was an ocean course like their photo shows on their website. Nice photography trick. Carts are very old and run down. Driving range was not good. Pace was painfully slow. Glad I paid a discounted rate our I would have been upset. This course is worth about $25-35 to ride to me. Big disappointment. Avila Beach is such a nice little town. Too bad the course is not better...
Not bad
Wish there were better yardage markers through out course great views but a little price I think
AB Golf
The course has huge potential but was poorly maintained. No yardage markers.
We were behind mens club which had a shot gun start on 16-18. They were extremely slow. Did not make any sense to start mens club there.
But the course crossing the San Luis river is quite interesting.
