Good Course, Very Bad Pace of Play
Course overall is in fairly good shape, fairways could use some work but the greens were relatively nice. I have played this course a handful of times, it is a fun course but the pace of play is always slow. Prepare for a 5+ hour round.
Good layout, poor conditions
The good:
Greens were well maintained and rolled smoothly.
Sandtraps had good sand and were easy to play out of.
The bad:
The fairways were pretty horrific. There were huge patches with no grass.
The rough was also burnt out. It was like playing off dirt.
The pace of play was horrendous on the front 9, but it seemed like people quit at a certain point and the back 9 moved quicker.
There was an extreme lack of visible yardage markers.
Conclusion:
I'm not really sure how Yelp and Golfnow had decent ratings for this place unless it just fell into disrepair recently. If I'm going to play in the suburbs of San Diego I'd much rather go to the Vineyard in Escondido for the same price.
Rough course, needs lots of work.
Played Chula Vista Thursday, we paid $16 to walk, which is normally a great price but after playing we did not get any bargain. Chula Vista is in rough shape, LOTS of bare spots, LOTS of ground under repair (but no repairs being done). Greens a in decent shape no complaints' there. I appears that the current management is only interested in rounds played and is not investing any money to improve the course.
Bottom line $16 to walk is a fair price but no bargain!
Slow play
5 and a half hour round of golf. Course is in horrible shape
Chula Vista
Played the blues (6520/71.5/127) on a GolfNow hot deal for $32.48 including a cart. The POP was brutal even for a Sat. afternoon. 3H, 5M to play the front 9! The back was better, but it was still a 5 1/2 hour round. Teed off @ 12:15 and finished in almost total darkness @ 5:48.
First time playing here, I liked the layout. It has been awhile since I played a par 73 course. Some fairly tight holes, but not overly tight. Many holes with a boundary fence or a water hazard down one or both sides. All five par 5's were potentially reachable for longer hitters. While the course layout was good, the condition for most of the course was poor.
The poa annua greens were mostly humpbacked with a decent pitch from back to front. You could expect severe breaks toward the front of the green if you were putting/chipping from pin high. They were firm, medium fast and generally putted well in spite of being a bit bumpy.
The sand traps were decently maintained with good sand. So far, so good, but from here the course really goes severely downhill.
The fairways were mostly thin with LARGE areas of hardpan. It has been a long time since I played a course that had this many large areas of dirt with no grass in their fairways. Numerous areas on many holes were 10 yards by 10 yards and should have been marked GUR. Hopefully they will improve, it looked like they had tried to transplant grass in many areas within the past few months.
The rough actually had better coverage than the fairways, but it too had a decent amount of hardpan, dirt areas. It was mowed down and not very punitive.
The tees were far from lush and pretty chewed up. The definitely needed more maintenance and regular divot repair.
The customer service was a +, they were almost on time in spite of being packed on a Sat. afternoon. The cart gal came around several times.
I liked the layout and would come back and play here again IF the conditions were better. However, under current conditions, your golfing time & $$$ would be better spent elsewhere.
Beginner Course
Course is a beginner layout with straight lines holes. Has a river that runs through which can be tricky for some. Very poor quality when it comes to the grass. A lot of dirty patches that doesn't make it fun to hit from. In the upside, the greens were decent to putt on.
Nice for the price
This was a decent municipal golf course for the price we paid. Fairways are in poor condition, but greens are nice.
Unbearable
The course Was in very poor shape... most fairways were mainly hard pack dirt and the pace of play was essentially 6 hours. We quit after 9 holes due to the incredibly slow play and we were refused a refund for the second nine due to having received a "discount" round through GolfNow - not sure how refunding half of any payment for playing only half a round is a loss given the fact that they accept the price discount through the service. My advice - AVOID THIS COURSE AT ALL COSTS!
Too much for a poor course like this
The course really looks like a slum. I would not ever play here again
Not a lot of grass
Chula has always had a fun layout. Unfortunately the drought seems to have taken its toll on the conditions. There is little to no grass in the fairways, and most of the barren areas are muddy. The greens are in good shape. It's still worth playing if you get a good deal.
Pace of play
The pace of play was a joke!! 5 hours and 10 minutes to play 18 holes at 8:00am. This is not a top notch golf course and should take no more than 4hrs to play this course. The course conditions were pathetic. I have never played a course in such bad shape as this course. The pace of play was joke. Will never play here again.
Perfect weekday golf course
I always enjoy this course, the staff is above average! They even put lemon in the water on the course!!!
Playing at Chula Vista Muncioal Golf Course
Had a wonderful round of golf at the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course. The pace of play and the course conditions was good. (Except for a few brown patches but that was fine considering the drought conditions all courses in Southern California are dealing with daily) Thanks GolfNow for helping make this happen. (Only lost one golf ball but found another so I broke even) Craig Juleen
Poor conditiom
This used to be my go to course but the condition got worse time and time again, too bad because the layout is fun with 5 par 5's and a few short par 4's and still be challenging.
Chula Vista muni
Place is a joke..don't waste ur money or time...course is in terrible shape...had to quit after 9 because we were on pace for over 6 hour round!
Fun Course
Its always a go to fun course to play. Can play slow but can get it done in a under 5 consistantly.
Slicers take caution
Long course but straight fairways.
Greens are beautiful 8 to 9 out of 10.
Super slow play way over booked, but only $19.00.
Chula Vista
Very slow pace with no ambassador around . Good price. Great staff.
the course is harder for slicers, water down the right
HAD LOTS OF GROUND WORK AT THIS TIME BUT COULD STILL GET THRU ok
bad shape
Shut course down an let it heal, green were bad dead spots all over course
