Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Nice job!

For a public course, the conditions were good. The greens were in excellent shape, pretty fast and true. The layout is very fun with lots of variety to hole design.

The staff were friendly and very helpful.

The snack shack offer good food, and even had hot dogs. Something we do not have at my home course! Ha!

A very enjoyable experience overall.

Great Course / Sub-Par Rental Clubs

Travelled from out of town. Called ahead to confirm they had rentals. Arrived to find out they had already rented out their TaylorMade Stealth/better sets. Was given a set of older, very very used clubs. Still charged $75 which is pretty steep for the quality. I would definitely recommend this course, but bring your own clubs.

Great greens!

I played early on a Tuesday, so pace was very fast. Greens were awesome. Fairways were good. Bunkers were all wet (I was only in one, thankfully.) Staff was not all that interested - could be friendlier. One of the better San Diego public courses for challenge, scenery and conditions.

Challenging course

Fairly tight, cannot spray ball. Fairways in good shape. Healthy drive from San Diego. Play was slow, took us about 4.5 hours.

Great track painful pace due to a large group not being pushed to play faster

As always one of the nicest courses and most cordial staffs in the area. Typically can get done in 4 1/2 to 5 hours on a weekend. This time took 6 plus. Was behind a large group having an outing and the group we were behind were two holes behind and not so much as a push from anyone to speed up. At one par 3 on the back there were 3 groups waiting to tee off.

Have to say first time it’s been an issue here. Let’s hope they push a little harder on these types of slow play in the future. Will not deter me from playing with all of the other positives at this course.

Poor pace of play

There was a tournament group of 36 people who went out on the same set of courses as everyone else. It probably would have been better for them to start out on a different course than the regular customers. This group played very slow and the marshals never asked them to speed it up. Also, some of the staff who were supposed to be doing the starting, for the players seemed more interested in gossiping among themselves, rather than tending to their customers. They seem to ignore customers, and continue to talk, even if someone wanted to ask them questions. I have played at Steele Canyon several times, and never run into this experience, so hopefully it was a one time thing.

Weekend golf trip

We played the Canyon/Ranch courses. The views on both were fantastic. Took a little longer to play than anticipated but quite frankly, that was not a concern and we enjoyed the scenery. These courses are challenging but fun. The only criticism I have is the golf carts should be updated to have GPS. I would definitely recommend playing this course if you are in the area.

Beautiful course, slow play day

Not sure why but pace of play was painful and we ended up having to quit after 15 due to dinner commitment.

Course was fun and in good shape. Will give it another shot int the future

Play at your own risk !

Great course with many challenges and great opportunities to land and score ( risk and reward )

The best fairways and smooth fast rolling greens make the course is very challenging, love all the elevating T boxes and blind dogleg ( bring extra balls)

Thanks guys for the best day of golfing and special thanks to the starter with the course layout information !

A Tale of Two Nines

27 holes: Canyon - Ranch - Vineyard

Played Canyon with ultimate elevation changes and forced carries; and absolute beautiful test of golf.

No.1 on the Ranch, takes you down to the valley with a creek that cuts across the par 5s.

Great staff, bar and restaurant. The only downside was hitting off mats on the driving range.

Definitely a bargain and well worth the trip!!
