Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Great course, but felt pressured by tournament players
We loved the course but had a members of the Friday tournament crowd come down while we were playing the first green and intimidatingly tell us to hurry up on the first hole and throughout our 18 holes. We kept the pace of play and were respectful. Was disappointed to know that public members who paid green fees were looked down upon at such a renowned course.

Steele Canyon
The course is in excellent shape. The fairways, greens and tee boxes were very playable. It's an interesting layout, very challenging in club selection for players who don't know the course because of changes in elevation. The greens are true, a little slower than I am used to.

Challenging par 71 course, in very good condition, but backed-up to make an over 5 hour round.

Great venue
Beautiful course extremely challenging back tees. Get yardage book etc as I hit wonderful drives but due to course idiosyncrasies put them in hidden canyons etc. needed a lot more info than usual on a course. Some fairways tough due to summer golf in southwest . Greens not easier to read. Overall 4.4 stars.
