Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Course conditions not very good

Although the greens were fine, the fairways were not as good as I have seen them in the past. Hopefully that will change soon.

I’d play again.... on a weekday

The course is fair, however you need to have knowledge of the distance. The course markings aren’t always accurate if you go by the scorecard.. The pace of play was quick for the first nine and came to a grinding halt on the back, some holes I waited 15 minutes. If the course goes to using the 3 nine hole courses, the backlog can be stopped. If everyone tees off on Ranch and after 9 split to Vineyard and Canyon pace of play will move. I played on a Tuesday.

Thank you for joining us at Steele Canyon. Unfortunately we are in our spring maintenance period where we don't have the flexibility of 27 hole rotations, 9 holes are under maintenance, so pace of play can be effected. Fortunately, we always have 18 holes in great condition!

Challenging Course

This was my first time playing this course. Beautiful setting, great layout and challenging. Super fast greens, well maintained, scenic course and some mandatory carry holes make this course extremely challenging for me. Great time and will definetly come back.

Did Not Disappoint

I've always heard good things about this course, but never wanted to pay the greens fees (which are usually about $100). Finally got a chance to play with a Hot Deal for $71+ fees and jumped at the chance. So glad I did! Fantastic course! Very challenging, but fun and beautiful. I wouldn't want to play every week, but good for special occasions. It's now in my top 5 courses in SD County.

always want to come back

played many "inland" courses near San Diego recently as they are very hot summer time. But this courses is standing out above many others in that the fairways are green and in excellent shape instead of brown and dry. this makes it an ideal course for playing cooler seasons.

The Garry Player design for the 3 9s are challenging and fun. can't wait to come back for another round.

Don’t Expect Much

Came here from out of town with a group of 8 people expecting a quality course for the $100 price tag. Front nine took about three hours. We played as a group of 8 on the back and still waited on every tee shot. At one point there were 18 people on one hole waiting to hit. Conditions were not great for a $100 course (mostly the fairways were a mix of mud/crab grass). Greens were decent. This property has a ton of potential to be great but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be ran properly. Spend your money elsewhere until things change here.

Sorry your experience wasn't up to expectations, but your comments are a bit off the mark. Your group was offered to go a different course rotation, which was playing at a quicker pace, as we have 27 holes, but you declined. The group that teed off directly in front of you finished in exactly 5 hours on a very busy Friday afternoon. Being from out of town you may not have realized that San Diego did receive nearly 2 inches of rain last week, the dormant fairways from the winter have started popping fresh grass and has not been cut low yet as we want to promote that spread and growth.

Nice layout, brutal pace of play

Great, fun layout. Not much grass in the fairways. Painfully slow pace of play...5 hrs plus on a Sunday at 8:30am.

We factored in 4:30-4:45 pace of play. Ended up skipping the last 3 holes to get to the airport. Won’t go back

Hidden gem in San Diego

Great course in east side of San Diego. The scenery is beautiful and you hear no outside noises, real peaceful and you connect to nature. The grass and greens are pretty decent, considering it’s Winter. The staff don’t like to answer questions but they mean no harm, I guess.. overall great experience
