Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Canyon 9 signature hole Photo submitted by RockinDoc on 10/05/2012
slow today and marshal did not help, he did not know the status of the front 9 at all
the course is a great and our favorite course in south county but the pace of play was slow today and the $125 plus $25 for the extra cart and range balls cost me $290 for my son and i to play a round.
Nice course
Nice course fun layout challenge with no experience. Some carries are tough to judge. Greens were excellent some fairway issues. I would not pay 100$ to play this course.
Another great outing at Steele Canyon
Course is drying out somewhat, but i have to hand it to the staff in keeping it in good conditions with latest heat we have been having.
Greens are fast, somewhat tricky. Must place the ball in strategic areas to score well throughout the course. Course is for skilled players and it rewards good shots. Staff is very friendly, always fun to play here.
Rough around the edges, but great layout
Greens were very good. Tee boxes were really beat up and uneven. Fairways were okay. Course conditions are about what you’d expect at a municipal course. But layout is super fun and greens are great.
4 out of 5
I like Steele Canyon. The grounds need to be watered more but it’s July. I had a good time today and the people working there were friendly.
Good course, bad experience with starter
Course overall was good, but I had bad experience with the starter (Around 60s, white male).
The starter was micro managing everything at first, which didn't bother me.
However, after I was on practice greens waiting for my tee time and headed back to the cart, he said "you guys weren't ready, so I let other group (who had tee time after ours) tee off first."
I could not believe he did not ask us first if we are ready AND let the group with later tee time to tee off without our permission. Starter's bad etiquette has gotten me furious.
Besides the starter's behavior, course was in good condition.
Very good day!
Challenging corse and the greens really roll true.
Kind of dry in some fairways. We be back
GOOD COURSE WITH POOR PACE
$90 to play and no GPS? Unacceptable when so many courses have it. 5 hours to get around? I"m sorry but I won't be returning. Course is good enough but 5 hours for the round even after calling a Marshal out twice only to be told pace was OK??
Surprisingly Strict on Time
My wife and I signed up for golf at 7:27 AM, but didn't get to tee off until 7:35 AM. We were paired up with another couple and there was a foursome in front of us that we could see, with no group ahead of them in sight. About half way through the front 9, the course Marshall stop us and said that we were playing slow. About a hole and a half slow to be exact. We agreed to play faster.
Within the next two holes, we caught up to the group in front and couldn't go any faster. The Marshall was actively following our group and we saw him a few more times watching us. To be honest, we never felt like we were playing slow but definitely sped up. It made the round more pressure filled and not enjoyable.
The most irritable thing at the end was that when we finished, it was 12 noon. That means our round took less than 4 and a half hours. Because we caught up to the group in front of us, there was no way to finish any faster. If you ask anyone who plays golf, a 4 and a half hour round is widely acceptable. The amount of pressure put on only our group to play faster was very unnecessary.
Great Course
Price wise in San Diego area, it is on the high side. BUT for the beauty of the course and hiw the course is maintained, its well worth the price. If you are playing in the summertime, be sure to bring plenty of water. It gets hot in thia area. BRING extra balls, as you would probanly lose a few if not familiar with the course layout. There are also environmentally protected areas where your ball can not be retrieved. This couse consist of 3, 9 holes courses. Make sure to include Canyon in your choice, since, personally i think this is the best of the 3.
Out of my league
Beautiful course but too much for my skill level. Trouble all over. If you are a 15 or less then you will love it. If you are over 15 then bring plenty of balls. Overall though I will play again once my game improves.
Mr. Holgate,
We are sorry that your round took 5 hours, we do strive for a 4.5 hour pace if not better at Steele Canyon. July 3 happened to be the busiest day of the year for many courses in the San Diego area, and with not much else to do because of COVID there are many novice golfers. Our marshalls did respond to both your calls, but as mentioned every single tee time from sunrise to nearly 5pm was sold out. Many people are not in a hurry to return to their sheltered lives.
