Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Canyon 9 signature hole Photo submitted by RockinDoc on 10/05/2012
Steel Canyon has 27 great holes
Course was in great shape, fairways and greens in excellent condition. Pace of play was fast for a Friday 12:15 tee time. I played as a two some and because of the fast pace, we got to play and extra 9 holes. Cannot beat the price $34.00 dollars for 27 holes. Enjoy....
Beautiful and challenging course
This is one of my favorite courses. Well maintained, tough and beautiful views. I highly recommend it to anyone who asks.
Tough course, but great views
Played 36 at Steele Canyon as part of a golf trip with the guys. Canyon/Ranch was our 2nd 18.
In my opinion, Canyon is the toughest 9 at Steele, and it's not for the faint of heart. It will challenge you at every turn. The elevation changes are the most severe and fairways are the tightest.
Ranch is probably the easiest 9, so you get a little bit of a break coming in.
Overall, the course is great. Perfect conditions and the holes are fun. Just be sure to bring your best game or bring some extra balls!
Amazing scenery and challenging course
Ranch/Meadow is a great 18 holes. The views are incredible on all the 9s at Steele.
Ranch is probably the easiest 9, but it is still very tough. The first hole is pretty easy, but the immediately the second hole has a big forced carry.
Meadow is quite a bit more difficult, but perhaps even more beautiful.
Conditions were fantastic. The course layout is tough, but still fun. Good shots are rewarded, but poor shots will cost you.
It's worth noting that the temperature at Steele is very warm compared to being in San Diego. It was probably 20 degrees warmer during our visit.
This course is a real "Steele" at $39 hot deal
Played in the afternoon on a Saturday... expected it to be slow... It wasn't. We finished our round on Canyon/Ranch in 3 1/2 hours! Course was in very nice condition. Guy in the clubhouse could have let play our booked round of Meadow to Canyon, but knew that a mini tourney of 20 was out in front of us so he switched us to Canyon and Ranch and we blew through our round in no time. Great day, great course. Typically too pricey for me, but not a bad deal at all with Golf Now hot deal!
Country Club conditions
Steele Canyon is in great shape right now, from tee to green. The challenge on this course is elevation change, and lots of hazards. This is the only Gary Player Signature course in San Diego, and it is unlike any other in San Diego County. A great value!
GREEN!: Great condition despite drought!
Played on a Thursday afternoon (Canyon/Ranch) for $29. Best value of any golf round I've played. Course is in great condition despite drought which has taken its toll on MOST other SD courses.
Great course; Well Worth the Money
Played the Ranch/Meadow layout. These three nines will challenge you mentally: lots of elevation changes, forced carries, sloping fairways. The course is in great shape: fairways, greens and bunkers all in good condition. Whether you manage to get a discount or not, or if you're a visitor to San Diego, you should play this course at least once.
Great shape!
Course is in unbelievble condition. Perfect geens, lush fairways. Great pace. Played all 27 holes in 5 hours.
Great staff.
Scenic, elevation changes. Enough about my score!
I played Meadow/Canyon, two very different nines. Hot Deal prices are reasonable and the course is in very nice shape. Greens were a tad slower than I've experienced here in the past and some of the bunkers are pretty hard and devoid of sand. Steele Canyon is an "Eye Candy" course with beautiful scenery and elevation changes and charms you while it's kicking your behind and taking your lunch money.
Green
Course was in perfect shape. Bunkers a little wet with heavy sand, because the sprinklers were turned off and on to keep the grass pristine. Other than that, beautiful.
Course was fun to play
Pros: Very good layout and fun to play. Course was in great shape. Greens were rolling very nicely. Play moved along briskly, so our twosome finished in 3.5 hours.
Cons: Didn't see the refreshment cart all round
Great course, thanks for the reviews
Played as a twosome Friday June 6th.... the reviews said the course was in exceptional condition and it was! Haven't played this course in a while but got a great rate on Golfnow with a promo code! I usually play the 'blues' maybe I should have played the 'whites'! Tough course!!! Tee boxes, fairways, greens, sand traps were all in good to excellent condition!!! Absolutely would play there again & recommend this course to others!!!
Enjoyed the day
First I like to say what a bum rap an out-of-towner gets playing here in San Diego. I paid $99 w/discount. The regular fee would be mid $40's. Well, I got an extra bonus when they waved the $20 for another 9 holes which ended up being 14 holes (a member wanted to show off their top hole on the course). The course was exciting, with challanges on every hole. If you're playing good you will enjoy the course. If you're having a rough day be sure to bring extra balls and go easy on yourself.
Always a great day
Myself and 4-8 of my buddies play here quite often. The 27 hole layout is always challenging. The Staff and I mean everyone are awesome!!!!!!
A real pleasure to spend the day there.
Love this track
Fun track with open fairways and some tight approach shots
the only bad thing
they have three courses there but they start everyone on too so you have people back to back on each hole they should spread out from the beginning across all 3 courses and the round would be much more enjoyable
A thinking course.
An excellent course. The price was right that everyone can afford. I will definitely comeback and play this course again.
A Pleasure to the Eye
This course is a pleasure to the eye with many altitude changes and splendid views (particularly on the Canyon course). You definitely require a cart. Overall the course is is very good shape and some of the greens in particular are extremely demanding of a precise approach shot. This is not a course for a beginner.
well maintained and course design is not bad.
Played canyon and ranch course with my wife.
8th hole at canyon and 3rd hole at ranch have great viewed.
anyway, well enjoyed and much fun.
Cheeseburg at restaurant was so nice.
strongly recommand to try it.
