Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Course has some very fun tee positions and challenging holes.

$40.00 for a weekend with cart was great. The staff was very attentive and on the ball. The course is in very nice shape and some of the tee positions are a lot of fun (parachute is awesome). Greens were in very good condition and rolled moderately fast and true. Only complaints - distance markings are so/so, several tee shots need local knowledge to take advantage of risk/reward, pin markings were not consistent (all black flags and the pins were up, back, middle). Greens are tricky to read and down hill, down grain makes for a tough putt. Slow start but after playing through 2 groups - it was wide open. Finished in 3 hours 10 minutes.

This course was challenging and has scenic views.

We had a great time golfing Steele Canyon. The staff was exceptional, which gave our round of golf that extra pleasurable memory. We will definitely be back for more.

Great course, great value, fast rounds

Just shot an 82 (my best score here) on canyon & meadows. Paid $29 for a 2:30p tee time, which is awesome for a couse of this quality. It's was just me & my boy who played & while on the course the Marshall came & politely helped us get ahead of a foursome. Finished in 3 hours, which is not out of he norm here. This course is beautiful, the scenery is beautiful & the course will test your skills for sure! You can lose a dozen balls if ur not striking it good or you can score with good shots. Go play!

Fun Course

Greens had been aerated 1-2 before, but ran smooth. Subtle breaks made greens tough to read. Fairways are generous, rough not punishing. Most holes have up/down to varying degrees. Some elevated tees with carries over unplayable areas.

Very fun course

This course is a good one. Many different holes and shots are required of you on this course and the grounds are very well maintained with consistent green speeds. Overall, not too long of a course and lots of fun tee shots that turn both ways and have varying elevation changes.

Challenging course

Great golf course! Challenging to a mid handicapper. If you shoot over 100's I don't recommend playing here. Greens were nice and fast, fairways were green and tee boxes were nice. Barring the east county heat, the course was fun to play. Sand traps were slightly in need of service, bunkers near the greens were both fluffy and hard it would be nice if they were consistent.

Great Layout but dry conditions. Look elsewhere if you want green fairways.

Recently played on a visit to San Diego, and was excited given prior reviews and Golf Digest's rating. So disappointed !!

The course has a great layout and fabulous scenery. But the area is in a drought and Steele Canyon is just not watering. The fairways are brown, and worn to dirt in some areas. Tee boxes are in poor condition with some just plain terrible with more sand than grass. Green's were well watered, but not very fast. I'd have to say that I'll pass on any future return. Recommend you pass as well.

Great course layout/pace/staff, but bad condition, avoid for now

I really enjoy this course, and have played here 2-3 times per year for the last 4 years. It's usually a nice treat and worth the comparatively higher green fees. The Bermuda grass is usually beautiful and well-maintained in the summer and brown, but highly playable in the winter. HOWEVER, I was shocked this time (played Meadow to Canyon as usual). I don't know if they tried to conserve water or save costs, but the fairways have gone downhill, and most of the course apart from the greens is brown. Many (seemed like most?) of the holes are cart-path only as well, which I've never seen there. The staff remain highly professional and the pace of play is great as always. The course just needs some serious attention right now. I would call to see if things have improved first.

Outstanding course, but conditions are not at their best

This is easily one of my favorite courses in San Diego. I like to play here as much as I can. Unfortunately, the summer as really taken its toll on the fairways as they were littered dried out and dirt patches... This is abnormal from my past experiences here. The greens, however, were still in excellent shape, which I've always found to be the case here. As always, the layout is challenging and the views are incredible. My only complaint is that the fairway conditions are not at their best at the moment.

Challenging Course with great desert scenery

Although the course is starting to get a little brown in spots due to the summer heat, it is still in good shape with nice greens. Challenging but fair, avoid the bunkers, the sand tends to be hard and more of a dirt consistency than sand with high lips.

Lots of fun

We got paired up with two members, who where extremely friendly and helped us navigate the course.

The course was dry, understandably though as the region was in a drought.

The greens where super-tough but I was still able to shoot in the low 70's - Some short par 3's and 5's that can be easy birdies.
