Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Course conditions not Great!

I have played several courses in the San Diego area but this time the courses were in very rough shape. I had friends that said to play this course as it was very good. I would play several other courses for less money in the San Diego area before paying the price to play this course again.

I think it is overrated and overpriced to play. The canyon 9 was ok but I didn’t care for the vineyard 9 had several hokey holes.

Pace of play

I knew when I scheduled a tee time on MLK day it would be slow. It took me three hours to play 10 holes. Most holes had two groups on each tee box. After 10 holes I decided that I had enough. Marshals were non existing. I understand that profit is the name of the game but please be a little more considerate when making tee times so close together. Better yet have Marshals on the course to keep players moving in a respectable manner.

We are sorry the round was not faster paced for the busy holiday. Back nine pace was much quicker as mentioned in the previous review. We did have 2 marshals going around the course, somehow they missed you, with 27 holes it is possible. The golf shop phone # is listed on every scorecard on the carts, in the future please call and make us aware of any issues and we are happy to address them as quickly as possible.

Great Views, Good Food, and Fast Greens

I played on a holiday and the pace of play was slow on the front nine but fast on the back nine after asking the group ahead of us to make an adjustment to catch up with the group in front of them. I played the Canyon and Ranch nines from the blue tees. Besides some temporary confusion from the starter about playing partners and when to tee off, the entire experience was ideal.

The greens rolled nicely but were too fast for most players at a speed of 11. Many balls rolled off of the green on chips and long putts. This wasn't really a bad thing, but definitely an added challenge. The fairways were in decent shape, but most lies were tight. There was ample sand in the bunkers. Most of the teeing grounds were in good shape, while others needed some work. All in all, the course was in good condition. The management puts forth a good product consistently. I have played this course 3 times in the last 2 years and enjoyed all 3 rounds. I will return.

Steele canyon.

Have played here when the course was first built club house was a pre-fab home and Tina Michelson was the teaching pro good track but not for the high handicap. But if you decide to play bring plenty of balls so you don't slow the pace of play down fast green's and plenty of break and slop.

Slowing falling apart; people should run business not computers and apps.

People should run businesses not computers and apps. Was a single for the first 4 holes then paired up with another single for the 5th hole then Paired up with a two sum on 6th. On the 7th hole we waited for 10 minutes and it was backed up a group on the 8th hole could get off the tee box. “Just practicing”

Call club house and complained and then moved us to vineyard and did not see a single person on vineyard .

Played 15 out of 18 holes.

** I see this at every course… over booked and no relief between tee times. A small suggestion to golf course mangers. Charge a few more bucks and cancel a tee time every 2 hours and spread it out. Give some relief and use the three courses.

I absolutely love this course and hate to complain.

Group of 5 ruined round

We had to leave with 3 holes left after 4.5 hours already. It would have taken us over an hour to finish. There were 5 groups on holes 7 and 8 of Ranch. When we left, we drove by these groups and noticed a group of 5 on the green of 8. There were no groups on the long par 5 9th hole. Noone was even clearing the green. A hole that should have had 3 groups on it had none. That group of 5 delayed 5 groups by over an hour. Long waits between holes makes it difficult to stay loose. When you pay $130 for a round, you don't expect to wait 15 mins between shots and rounds to take 6 hours. Terrible experience

Good but could be so much better

If they sank some more money into the course it could be 5 star. VERY slow play.

Love Golf? Play Here

We played three rounds in four days and ran into perfect weather and excellent course conditions each day. It's an excellent, challenging design, with long sloping downhill par fives, greens that will test your putter--no two holes are alike, something I love about any golf course that can achieve it. The greens were top notch. At $150-160 a round, it sits just on the edge of affordability to me, but we came to San Diego to play and are very happy we spent our money at Steele Canyon. There are good reasons to play Torrey if you can get on, but this course is more fun, more accessible, without the legendary Torrey rough to deal with.

Good layout. Poor course maintenance.

Super fun, layout many challenging holes. Waiting on every Teebox for a 5 1/2 hour run is no fun. I’m sure because it was a weekend it would be busy, but better spacing would be desired. Staff was more than courteous and everyone we met on the course, we’re very professional and friendly
