Can bunkers qualify as their own continent? Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert seems determined to find out.

This Ron Frehm design boasts bunkers so huge that they look like the inventor of the Big Gulp came up with them. And escape is anything but guaranteed. Sometimes getting out of one bunker, just means landing in another at Desert Falls.

That is just part of the reason this course totes a 128 slope rating - putting it among the five highest slope ratings in the entire Palms Springs area. Remember, this is the golf mecca with Pete Dye's Stadium Course, which was only designed to be "the toughest golf course in the world." Desert Falls is on that list.

There are five sets of tees to take away some of the bite. But the greens are still an obstacle of their own. These are undulating greens that are large enough to offer several varieties of challenges.

Just getting on the green is not enough at Desert Falls. It's important to land on the right part of the green. This is also a course with more hills than you expect to see in the desert.

Should not be opened

Played this course yesterday and it was awful. Rip off at any price. Course was a mess and shouldn’t open until it is ready As a 10 handicap, who has played all over the world , this is one of the worst golf experiences ever. The green keeper must embarrassed toopen

Very accommodating but pace was slow

I was late for my tee time and they found me a slot. They couldn’t have been more accommodating. The course layout is typical for the older courses in the Coachella Valley. Lots of doglegs and houses. The conditions were very good except the greens needed rolling. Probably too soon to roll them given they just reopened after reseeding. They were very slow and didn’t roll true. The pace was slow with lots of beginners out there. I would try it again in a few weeks maybe not on a weekend and I would recommend.

Not ready for the reopen

Great looking course, however they opened to quickly after reseeding. The grass was so thick and high is that we were looking for out balls on very shot. Even next to the fairway. Wasn’t a lot of fun, especially with cart path only and having to look for your ball after a great shot. Expected a lot more for $120.

Nice course, great staff, good value

I would have unquestionably rated it higher except it had browned up severely as it was about to close for maintenance. And where this happens, but it still doesn't change the fact that the end result was a substandard quality around.

Love summer golf in the desert!

I played the last 2 mornings first off as a single and finished 18 both days in 2 hours. If you are around and want to beat the heat Desert Falls CC is a great track to play especially in the morning.

Slow Play, hot weather

Booked on Golfnow. Got to the course and was told the course was 'busy'. Tee'd off on time.

The first 4 holes took an hour and the front nine took 2hr 20 mins - in 105F heat!! We were behind a 4 ball tournament (never mentioned when we checked in).

After speaking to the pro shop after nine, we played the front nine again in 1 hr 30mins.

The course was quite burnt out - more so than other courses we have played this week.

Typical summer conditions

The course is tough but had a lot of fun holes. The course condition is pretty rough around the edges but is to be expected for the Coachella valley in the summertime. If you have a good idea where your ball will land you should mostly find decent grass. The greens were a little hard to get a good read on but that is probably just me being a really average golfer. There wasn’t many people playing so we had the course to ourselves. We paid $35 per person so I’d say it was definitely worth it for a summertime round.

Lacking

Bad impression as soon as I drove up. Sign says bag drop we'll carry it for you...not! So I carried it down a flight of stairs. Place was like a morgue. Fairways are wider than I've ever seen. But unless you drive the ball far your short shots are over nasty traps with no sand, just a mix of dirt and gravel. Cooling stations with cold water, no cups, but cold water. I think really good players might like, this course. Greens are the slowest I've seen in years, not hard to read just be ready to break parallel with your putter. Number 9 & 18 are 2 of the strangest layouts ever. But like I said power hitters might like this one, except for the traps.

Mediocre Service

Staff is friendly enough just to get by ,no extra. In terms of amenities they had a shared ice chest everyone dips into to fill your water cup .no towels available Cart barn attendant doesn't even attempt to load your bag on the cart.Theres so many courses in the desert area you'd think they'd want to set them selfs apart from the rest..I get it ,it's hot ,but it's not like they were super busy. .

Very poorly maintained course which is too bad. I’ll bet it was once a very grand place to play.
