Can bunkers qualify as their own continent? Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert seems determined to find out.

This Ron Frehm design boasts bunkers so huge that they look like the inventor of the Big Gulp came up with them. And escape is anything but guaranteed. Sometimes getting out of one bunker, just means landing in another at Desert Falls.

That is just part of the reason this course totes a 145 slope rating - putting it among the five highest slope ratings in the entire Palms Springs area. Remember, this is the golf mecca with Pete Dye's Stadium Course, which was only designed to be "the toughest golf course in the world." Desert Falls is on that list.

There are five sets of tees to take away some of the bite. But the greens are still an obstacle of their own. These are undulating greens that are large enough to offer several varieties of challenges.

Just getting on the green is not enough at Desert Falls. It's important to land on the right part of the green. This is also a course with more hills than you expect to see in the desert.

There are better options in the Valley

Do not play this course during overseeing prep time. This is probably an outstanding course in the good growing seasons, but don't let the lower end of summer season price lure you. The rolling topography and hot dry summer are not a good combination here. The course was trashed and you struggle to find any grass worth playing off. The greens were a mess, having little to do with overseeing prep. They were just trash. The outside cart guy was extremely helpful and very nice. The pro shop desk guy was having a bad day and let it show. He could be overheard complaining, using not so perfect language, and told someone it would be his last day there. Will never know if it was.

Great layout, need a ranger though

If you like to think your way around a golf course you will like this layout. Really challenging and the most interesting greens around. The conditions were not that great but I suspect it was because they are getting ready to overseed. The marshall comment: two guys from the 2 groups in front of us got in a verbal battle, almost came to blows. Would have been good to have a marshall around to kick those clowns off the course. Was very slow as well. Staff was great otherwise

Staff was incredibly nice and accommodating

Such a great value when it comes to price! Club house is a little dated but that kind of adds to the nostalgia of playing in the desert. I love the course layout, rolling hills, and elevation changes throughout! Greens could benefit from a re seeding and the spongey rough will hide your ball so keep eyes on those shots. Overall the course was wide open giving way to a good pace of play!

Desert Fun

Played at 8am in middle of summer. Pace was quick as there weren't many out here. For the most part the course conditions were good, with the exceptions of a few greens that had minefields in them. Good bang for the buck and yes I'd play here again. I did get to witness the gentleman I was playing with Ace the 13th hole! That was the highlight of the day!

No anxiety

Although we were stuck behind a threesome, we had great time at desert falls. Staff was very friendly and relaxed, marshall came round sveral times. This time the long grass was cut on several holes, which took away the anxiety of hitting a draw teeshot. I know, people who played here as well will say: aren’t the fairways wide enough?!?! Of course, virtually all the fairways are wide open , but in the end golf is a mind game, right?

So, we enjoyed therfore this time our round even more, regardless our improved score of today! Thank you desert falls team to have the holes in such immaculate shape.

Will come again on my next visit in coachella valley.

Long Hitter's Course

Very wide fairways - a good thing and often helpful - but mostly rolling hills and fairways, elevated greens, and some nasty bunkers make it an overall difficult course. Because of the many uphill fairways and long par 3's (200 yds from blue tees) it's a course most suited to longer hitters. The condition of the bermuda fairways is excellent (especially for the desert) and the greens are very good - although a little slow - but the bermuda rough is very deep and can be nearly impossible to play from - which I attribute to simply being summer playing conditions due to reduced course maintenance. So be sure to keep your shots in the fairway! Overall a fun and very challenging course that I would play again - but from the white tees.

Conditions were rough

I was disappointed in the conditions, especially the greens. It is summer I realize, but it was pretty bad. I played the same course over a year ago and it's declined since then. Great layout and staff though.

Fun day

The course was in good shape considering how hot it’s been around here lately. The grounds crew got a late start and there were bugs all over me most of the round. Great layout with several blind shots. It really makes you think. Staff was friendly. They have reduced services on Mondays and Tuesdays during the summer. I’ll try to get back there soon.

Fun course

Booked last minute as a hot deal, I was pleasantly surprised with how this course played, especially having done little research on it. Staff were all super friendly and couldn’t do enough to help us, including keeping the kitchen open to enable us to have lunch. The greens were a little slow and there were small signs of disease on some. Layout is fun and plenty of bail out options on most holes, just avoid the houses and some of my group clearly didn’t get the memo about
