Can bunkers qualify as their own continent? Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert seems determined to find out.
This Ron Frehm design boasts bunkers so huge that they look like the inventor of the Big Gulp came up with them. And escape is anything but guaranteed. Sometimes getting out of one bunker, just means landing in another at Desert Falls.
That is just part of the reason this course totes a 145 slope rating - putting it among the five highest slope ratings in the entire Palms Springs area. Remember, this is the golf mecca with Pete Dye's Stadium Course, which was only designed to be "the toughest golf course in the world." Desert Falls is on that list.
There are five sets of tees to take away some of the bite. But the greens are still an obstacle of their own. These are undulating greens that are large enough to offer several varieties of challenges.
Just getting on the green is not enough at Desert Falls. It's important to land on the right part of the green. This is also a course with more hills than you expect to see in the desert.

The fairways were without grass., cut to nubs, rough very high, needed to be cut. Greens were ok

Excellent course. Fair but tough! You have to be on your game to score well. Great course for challenging you on every shot! You need to concentrate on every shot. Especially on the greens....
Beautiful Course
Great time playing this course for the first time. Nice layout and course was in great shape. Very nice staff.
Rough
Greens were great condition, fairways were still Bermuda but played well. The rough was cut pretty high and if you went in it you couldn’t find your ball which caused frustration and wasted a lot of time.
Extreme slow play
This was the slowest round I have played in the desert in 15 years. 5 hours + is just was to slow and no fun. Very poor marshaling today.
We did not get to finish our round. Had to quit at 15.
Waited on every shot. Was so backed up we had to quit.
MOW THE ROUGH
Apparently, the club had overseeded the course but it seemed to have NOT taken well. Fairways were thin, still looked like bad bermuda...greens were okay, but not in good winter condition. Worst of all was the rough...it had been left to grow to over a foot deep on many holes. Other holes where it had been mowed that day, the grass was still too tall to find your ball and all grass clippings were still in place. We lost nearly a dozen balls and we were not hitting way off fairways. It was a miserable round for my wife and I...we swore never to play DFCC again.
The rough is way too long
From the first hole on if your ball was off the fairway it took too long to find it. if you could. If you didn’t drive over it or walk over it good luck finding it. The fairways have not filled in with grass. Too many brown spots. The greens were slow but in good shape. Not worth the $86/player to play there.
Lost Booking
When I phoned the club Thursday to add 4th to our three some club house staff could not find my reservation!
Proshop staff were able to give us another tee time to accommodate us.
If your ball was a foot off the fairway it was very different to find as the rough was very long grass apparently due to be cut in 2 weeks
Frustrating
Spent most of the round looking for balls, grass was 8" tall alongside the fairways. Very frustrating
