Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club
About
Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club is a Johnny Miller co-design that's a short drive from its sister Lakes Course. The two courses will never be mistaken for each other though. Ranch Course is a pumped up course that's big in almost every way. There are over 300 feet of elevation changes and in excess of 100 bunkers around the course.
Miller and his design partner John Harbottle III put together a course that plays as bold and showy as Las Vegas. Only it's located in Carson Valley, halfway in-between the more nature resort towns of Reno and Lake Tahoe.
The bunkering can be severe on Genoa Lakes' Ranch Course and the mountain scenery can be even more striking. Even though it's not far from the Lakes Course, the Ranch Course is definitely set up in its own world.
Miller gives golfers a fighting chance though and often the latitude to decide their own fate. Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes is full of risk-reward holes. Most notable might be No. 18. This 561-yard par 5 gives you not one, but two shots (minimum) where you must decide how much lake you want to try and cut.

The Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes
One of my favorite courses. I have played it the last three years on my trips to Lake Tahoe.
The course is in great shape. The greens are a little fast and the staff is one of the best in the business.
Got stuck behind a couple of folks that weren’t that fast but jumped ahead at the turn.
I had one of my best rounds at The Ranch this year and will definitely be headed back.
Seriously, go play this challenging but very fun course.
Need to Update Various Things
The flag sticks have no reflectors that make it very difficult if not impossible to get even a semi-accurate yards reading using a laser range finder. Also at check-in they need to inform you if the range is soon going to be closing. We had to wait about an hour for a golf cart. The course needed extensive watering on the front 9.
Great
Fantastic course. Very tough and humbling. Only issue I had was no yardage markers in the fairways.
Excellent
Luxury feel for a public course price. Had all the feelings of playing at a country club.
I love the challenge. Hole 4 is a mess. It’s a cow pasture. 5 and 6 is just ok. The rest of the layout is great. The best golf starts at no. 7. Love the back nine. Great views.
Great fun course!
Played Ranch course today with two other singles. I love playing this course! Very nice driving range/practice facility, friendly staff and great on-course cart service. Course was in great shape - putting tip from locals is that all puts break down toward river. Challenging course, great views. Highly recommend!
Very nuce
Love the layout. It's a Wonderful course from whatever Tee box you're playing. The course was quite wet we haven't had a lot of rain. I'd love to see him speed up the greens a bit and this course could be one of the best.
Best course in this area hands-down
I am an avid golfer who plays quite a bit and with the in-laws living here I get out maybe once a month in this area. This course, without a doubt, is the best in the area. It is a difficult course with challenging shots but if you can keep your drive in the fairway you’ll be rewarded with some really cool approach shots. The greens are always in great shape and the pace of play is always ideal.
the terrain makes you think about your next shot
awesome view of the Sierra's and Carson Valley. almost every shot will need you to keep in mind how the ball will roll toward the valley. Staff has always been extremely helpful and welcoming
Amazing course
Conditions were great, friendly staff, and the view is 2nd to none.
Great course, especially in season when greens are fast
Played this course for many years and under many names. Original layout was better, but new front Nine is a little mor player friendly even though older layout was the best in Carson valley. Still a great course, especially when summer rolls in and the greens start running fast. Greens were slow the day I played, but cold streak just ripped through valley and I doubt this emerald in year they could cut short enough without long term damage. They did, however, run quite true. If you never played here, you need to keep ball in fairway. Lots of trouble and easy to lose balls in natural landscape. Back nine is the payoff and 18 is a great downhill finishing hole. Definitely a course worth playing if you get the chance. Especially in summer & fall when the ball really runs on these large and undulating greens.
Good to be out
Course just recently opened. Course is very good shape for this time of year. Weather was in low 90's, wind picked up in the afternoon, but I encounter much worse in the Carson Valley. Excellent day for a very reasonable price. Staff very friendly and accommodating.
