Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club
About
Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club is a Johnny Miller co-design that's a short drive from its sister Lakes Course. The two courses will never be mistaken for each other though. Ranch Course is a pumped up course that's big in almost every way. There are over 300 feet of elevation changes and in excess of 100 bunkers around the course.
Miller and his design partner John Harbottle III put together a course that plays as bold and showy as Las Vegas. Only it's located in Carson Valley, halfway in-between the more nature resort towns of Reno and Lake Tahoe.
The bunkering can be severe on Genoa Lakes' Ranch Course and the mountain scenery can be even more striking. Even though it's not far from the Lakes Course, the Ranch Course is definitely set up in its own world.
Miller gives golfers a fighting chance though and often the latitude to decide their own fate. Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes is full of risk-reward holes. Most notable might be No. 18. This 561-yard par 5 gives you not one, but two shots (minimum) where you must decide how much lake you want to try and cut.

Better hit straight here
Very pretty layout for each hole. Magnificent views but you must be able to hit straight and get your distance right or you may lose a lot of balls as I did.
Impossible Greens & Worse Bunkers
The greens at the Ranch Course are impossible to putt. They are just small patches of different types of grasses and so soft from being over watered is crazy. You better chip to gimme or forget about it. The sand traps are in poor condition and just given token maintenance or raked with a cart. Other than that the course if fine, the staff was very friendly and efficient. The fairways and the rough were in good condition. We saw the beverage cart twice per nine which is good. It's a a shame that the main club house and dining is closed, but there is a small bar and cafe in the pro shop.
$$$
Love course and location etc. just too expensive to play very often.
Confusion from the start.
My friends and I arrived for our tee time (9:25 AM), we were told that our time was really 9:55 AM. They said our time was never the time shown by GolfNow.
Excellent Day
The Ranch Course is in great shape, really fun to play. 5 sets of tees cater to everyone's abilities. Staff is friendly, informed and very helpful .
Will definitely play there more.
Great day of golf
Challenging for all levels, well maintained course with very helpful staff. Well priced.
Golf now brought this course into my price range
I have wanted to try Genoa Lakes Ranch course for many years, but found it a bit to costly. Thanks to GN I got the chance. The staff is as friendly as they get. The course was in good summer shape and not crowded at all. The greens were small but well kept and consistent. Had a great day
HEAVEN !
Here's all I have to say about Genoa Lakes, if there is a golf course in heaven, Genoa Lakes is it ! Plus, the customer service is FIRST RATE ! A MUST PLAY on any visit to Carson City !
Good Course, but needs some work
I've played this course when I was 14, currently 24. The course needs a little maintenance and upkeep. Unfortunately, they took out 5 holes along the hillside. The new holes are very disappointing, holes 3-7. However, besides these holes the rest of the course is good. The greens could use some more care but the fairway and tee boxes are in good condition. I prefer the Lakes Course at Genoa, a much better track.with more character and better layout. Overall, the Ranch is a good course. I enjoy playing it and if your on a golfing vacation around Lake Tahoe its a good course if you don't want to pay the high price for courses such as Edgewood or Old Greenwood in Truckee.
It's Not All Good........ It's All Amazing!
Everything about this course was exceptional for me and my group. We had an 11:15 GN on a Sunday. The forecast was a little iffy but since we were from out of town this course was a must do. We had some wind and a little hail but essentially didn't see a single player the entire round. Conditions seemed to change on every hole. But what stayed the same was the incredible views/vistas you get at each teebox. This is true for the front as well as back 9. (The front is relatively flat and the back ventures up the hillside).
The course is well maintained, the staff extra courteous. I would play this course again in a heartbeat and so should you!
Genoa lakes ranch course
The staff was very friendly
The course was in excellent shape
The golf now was a great deal at 50 dollars
Would definitely play course again if I returned to tahoe
Playing around the rain
Staff allowed us to delay our tee time due to rain and then we're accommodating when rain returned. The sun allowed us to enjoy the views over the valley during the back ( Upper) nine.
Good course
Hardly anyone there, just perfect for our foursome. We let a couple of twosomes thru, and had the course to ourselves. Redesign of the course, not as good as it was in the past, but still good enough for the money. Great little bar with second drink deal. The food was good also. Will be back.
Winter golf
Course was in good shape for this time of year. Had a frost delay but everyone got out with no problems.
Great views, great staff
Had a great time playing here. The staff were amazing. Great check in with Charlie and Charles at bag drop was very welcoming to us first-timers. Brought the cart out to our car and gave us tips.
Views from the course are great. Get to see the valley and the surrounding ranges.
The play was good until the last 6 holes and then it kinda backed up a bit. My play coulda been better.
Beautiful layout
First time playing the course. The staff were very helpful to my wife and I. Let us go out early and play by ourselves. The only problem we had was on the back nine. We ran into a 5 some two groups ahead of us. The ranger saw them but did not break them up.
Genoa Ranch course
Excellent valued course. Challenging but playable at all levels of play.
What did they say when you showed them the confirmation from GN on your phone or a printout?
