This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.

Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

PGA conditions 1 week before the tournament.

Wow , fastest and truest greens in the valley. Great staff and a four hour round while cart path only restrictions in place. Pete Dye put danger everywhere. Island greens very nerve racking.

Best Course in PGA West!

TL;DR — best golf experience from range to green

Starting from the range, they have trackman setting to see how far you carry and roll out. Very cool tech to use for free. They provide free balls and alignment sticks, too. They also have two chipping areas that have a good decent amount of slope and varieties. Putting green is representative of the course as putts don’t break as much as you think.

Course itself is always in great shape. Blue tees are plenty hard for single digit handicappers as you’ll need to be accurate. You can easily lose balls in water on all the holes, and tough bunkers all around. Really challenging and really fun. You’ll get to use all the clubs in your bag and see some incredible views. Highly recommend!

Diabolical

If your a 12 handicap or higher, this course will wear you down. I’m not saying I didn’t have great time, but as all Dye layouts you better have some ‘game’. PGA officials were on the course preparing it for the upcoming AM EX tournament. All the greens had just been top dressed but it didn’t seem to affect the speed

conditions

The course is easy if you stay out of the traps. The sand traps make the course on a level by itself. The fairways are perfect and almost like artificial turf. The rough is not so desired because it is brown and not maintained. Sometimes it is best to take 3 shots to the green instead of risking the alternative.

1st Stadium course round

Played the Stadium course for the first time with my brother and we both had a fun time playing it. It’s a strong Pete Dye risk reward design, forcing wise decision making and strategies in order to score well and avoid trouble. A cart shortage caused a changed of plan for our wives as we planned to have them ride along, disappointing. And #11 was modified to a 245 yard par 4 with a temp green in prep for the upcoming America Express PGA Tour stop. Otherwise we enjoyed the course and would recommend playing it.

Wait a while

Greens are the worst I’ve played in the valley. Also #11 is a temp green in the fairway 240 yds from tee on a normally 550 yd hole. Wait until after the pros get here.
