This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.
The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.
Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Great layout; very slow play
Love the layout ... every hole is different and interesting. Conditions were poor but a bit understandable as last round of the summer before overseed. Worst part was pace of play. 4:10 for 16 holes ... couldn't finish because of darkness. Three groups on most of the holes ... 4 on one of the par threes. Too many singles or twosomes that slowed play down. Person on the range told us we’d never get the whole round in ... made me ponder why they didn’t tell me that when I made the reservation. Disappointing that we couldn’t finish.
We apologize for the pace of play issue you experienced. We always try to keep a great pace when having our golfers on the course. Great Golf
My two sons and I have been coming to the desert and have always played a round or two at PGA West. We love the courses and the facilities. The personnel is great and very friendly.

Stadium was hot...
Although hot and a bit slow pace of play, Stadium lived up to its pedigree. Played from the Blues and what a challenge...back tees would be even trickier! You need to bring skill and have every shot. One of the best tracks to test your game. Each hole unique and memorable but
par or better on Alcatraz always a good takeaway.

The Stadium just before overseed
PGA West never disappoints. Most courses in the desert are a little rough just prior to over seeding, the PGA has kept the conditions at a high level considering the temperature extremes. The staff is top shelf and treats outside play guests like they are members. Everyone from the pro shop, outside services crew and starter before our round, to the folks working the beverage cart, halfway house and even the course marshal delivering cooling towels and bottled water made our round extremely memorable. Last but not least the hospitality, and food Ernie's as so awesome that I would recommend popping in for a beverage or bite to even even when not playing the two courses at this clubhouse.

Hardest round but one of the most fun
This course is the hardest I’ve ever played, you get punished if you don’t get the fairway. That said its a course the pros play and the experience of playing where they play and trying to make your own iconic shots was worth all of the frustration. I will play again one day.

Great Course
I saw some reviews that indicated that the back nine was diverted to a Nicklaus course. The back nine on the stadium course is now open. Course was in decent condition and the greens were not as fast as I have seen them play in the past. I went out as a lone single and got through the course in 2.5 hours.
