This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.

Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Stadium Death March

Hoping this is not a trend. Three groups on every hole. Five plus hour round. On a Tuesday. Two singles in my group were solid people. We persevered with smiles all around.

That said Stadium marshals should be beaten with sand filled rubber hoses.

Bucket list but call ahead

This course is on everyone's bucket list with good reason. There are hazards everywhere and a lot of the holes remind me of a links course with hidden peril everywhere. My first advice to you is to pick the correct tees. The slope of this course is extreme at all the tees. The colors do not match what most of you are used to so ask the starter which tees would be best for your handicap. That said, unfortunately the quality of the greens is poor currently, so call ahead before you play. In our group well hit shots that would have stopped quickly on other courses released an additional 30-40 ft making it hard to get the ball close. They are also lightning fast so expect a lot of 3 puts.

Well worth the price!!

The stadium course is such a beautiful place to play, well worth the price of admission. Course was in great shape and pace of play was better than expected at 4.5 hours

The only knock is the greens and only because the are new

And were very firm and hard to hold but rolled true as any greens I’ve ever played. We were told beforehand so it wasn’t a big deal. Overall this place is a beast and recommend it highly. Staff was great at all levels and just a really enjoyable round of golf from start to finish

Hallowed ground for golfers

The stadium course is a Pete Dye slice of Nirvana. This course is not for the faint of heart. I played when it was very windy. Narrow fairways meticulously manicured. So green and beautiful. Golf Holes that challenge every part of your game. The greens very true and fair. Many water holes. Many moguls and bunkers. I played here. 30 years ago. It is different but a place they dreamed up for a golfer that's memorable. I love this place.
