This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.

Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Challenging course in La Quinta!

Fun course with challenging water features. They put in new greens recently so they were playing super firm. Always nice to play a PGA tour course for such a good deal (I snagged a hot deal)!

Good conditions before they punch greens. Tough course play up!

Good conditions before they punch greens. Tough course play up! Used Hot Deal coupons for cheap twilight round, well worth it. Greens are getting burnt out but fairways, rough, collars everything else is lush. Get it before they punch greens end of July. Highly recommend white tees. Awesome views.

You better be ready

Nice course, started with my drive in the lip of the bunker, got out, double bogeyed and played rest of my round 6 over. Tough course if you can’t hit fairways and hit 8 and 9 irons very high and land them soft. The greens are very true and fast. Got out of the deepest bunker in the world in one and bogeyed the hole, parred the signature par 3. Great views and beautiful course…

Slow pace of play

Played on Father’s Day. We were waiting for the group in front of us on 2 and 3. A family of 4. Three guys played from the tips and hit 7+ shots a hole. We called the pro shop on 4 as we were holding up the group behind us on every hole. The Marshall came out and was so rude. We politely asked if he had spoken to the group in front of us and he rudely put his hand up, motioning for us to stop talking, and told us the pace of play is 4.5 hours and they were on that pace. We politely walked away, knowing that this one group, and our rude Marshall, would make this round crawl for the next few hours. We proceeded to pull up to this group, who were still on the tee box on every hole, which backed everyone up all day. The group could have simply said “hey we are playing a bit slow and have a casual round if you want to play through.” The Marshall could have also suggested it. Instead it just killed the pace. Stadium can be a fun course but no course is fun when it’s managed like this. The icing was the 17th Alcatraz hole. When we finished the par 5 16th, the family was slowly pulling up to hit their 3rd shots (drops after not clearing the water from the tips). They took 20 minutes to clear the hole. Brutal. They then didn’t even put the flag back in. But hey, the Marshall did bring us cold towels.

Getting the last few rounds in before overseeding

My wife and I played and afternoon round here last week. Couldn't beat the price. The layout is a typical Pete Dye Challenge with extra tricks. The conditions were understandably off because the Stadium is scheduled to be closed in few weeks for overseeding. The only knock would be the foursome of "Bro's" ahead of us playing from the Black tees. Painful! I am not sure they could play the back tees from a put-put course let alone the Stadium... After six holes we jumped them. turned into a much better round. No Ranger. Only gripe.

Worth the heat

We teed off at 330p in June so the temps were in the triple digits but the big advantage to that was we were able to finish our round in 3h30m.

Marshall had plenty of water every time he came around and even some frozen towels which we essential to staying cool. Challenging course but fun overall. Alcatraz on 17 is intimidating.

Amazing value for a twilight round.

Teatime

Great course overall. Had a 4 party 6:36 tee time on sunday june 8. Overall slow day lots of time slots were available. I know its technically my responsibility or the golfers. The couple that was paired with us got heat sickness night before, even at 6:30 in the morning the temperatures are already reaching 80° and 110 degrees by 12. when I walked into the pro shop and told the two ladies this they said I still have to pay for all 4 times. I paid for all four tee times, was going to just players 1-2 and my partner just 3, but there were club members behind us so we were at twosome and kept pushing up. So couldn’t even do that. but overall, the course is great will manage. Everything was fantastic. Just the two ladies at the pro shop were not helpful at all.

Stadium Death March

Hoping this is not a trend. Three groups on every hole. Five plus hour round. On a Tuesday. Two singles in my group were solid people. We persevered with smiles all around.

That said Stadium marshals should be beaten with sand filled rubber hoses.

Bucket list but call ahead

This course is on everyone's bucket list with good reason. There are hazards everywhere and a lot of the holes remind me of a links course with hidden peril everywhere. My first advice to you is to pick the correct tees. The slope of this course is extreme at all the tees. The colors do not match what most of you are used to so ask the starter which tees would be best for your handicap. That said, unfortunately the quality of the greens is poor currently, so call ahead before you play. In our group well hit shots that would have stopped quickly on other courses released an additional 30-40 ft making it hard to get the ball close. They are also lightning fast so expect a lot of 3 puts.

Such a beautiful and challenging course. It’s no wonder why this is one of the courses the pros come to play. Had such a great time here and will definitely play this course again.
