This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.

Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Larry Jones Playing at the Stadium Course

It's summer in the desert and it was hot but the golf course was in great condition, pace of play was fabulous, the staff went above and beyond to supply us with water and towels. Highly recommended.

Great and Legendary Golf Course, but in horrific shape! Don’t play here till September

I played this course yesterday for my birthday, and without a doubt it is a legendary golf course with such a beautiful design. I thought about playing it because of the great reviews, so I headed out and gave it a whirl. The course was in horrendous shape, the fairways and greens have suffered because of the heat, and I found out that the course will be closing next week for two weeks to punch and maintenance the course. I wish I knew about this sooner because then I would not have paid $79 for my round. While I enjoyed the layout and the history, I felt like I was ripped off for the price I was charged. I will definitely be back after August when the course will be in much better shape, but do not play here till then!

PGA West Stadium

Course was in OK condition with lots of dry, need-repair patches on greens, fairways. $64 in late afternoon a little pricey for weather and conditions but always worth playing once during my annual guys golf week.

Great way to get golf outing started

Fun to see where pros play and play a challenging course. Course knowledge is important if you want to score well. Greens rolled true. This was the first course of the five we played in a two and a half days and was fun. Hottest time of the year and course was showing it but didn't take away the experience

You better be very accurate!

This course is not meant for your average golfer. I’m a 12 handicap and did not break 100 here due to the extreme topography everywhere on the course, and the greens would not hold anything.

Pete Dye is insane!

Pete Dye courses may be the craziest of courses. Every hole basically tells you exactly what shot it requires, if you’re off even by a little bit, you will be ejected. Course was in relatively good condition considering a heat wave in the desert in June. Some of the greens are baked out and some have ground under repair on the fringes, but overall not too bad. Bunkers could use a little more sand, but for the summer in the desert, great track!

We typically play the Stadium course when we're out here. In the past, I was never impressed with the condition of the course, but I love the challenge of the layout. This time, the course was in much better condition that the previous times. Still very difficult, but this time, better condition.
