Incredible scenery and one of Nicklaus' best design efforts
"The Nick" is Colleton's original course, and enjoys some of the best non-ocean scenery of any golf course on the East Coast. Several huge marsh views combine well with a course that is tough but fair, often with plenty of room to play as long as you have at least a hint of local knowledge. The dunesy closing stretch is a highlight, as is the graceful clubhouse that lords over the 18th green.
The Nick's marshside short-game practice facility is one of the best I have ever seen - perfect for spending as long as you want honing your game in a wonderful setting.
Overall I prefer the Dye course to the Nicklaus course at Colleton River, but it's a heck of a nice choice for the membership to have.

Very good course
Better than expected for Nicklaus. The first 13 holes are routed through the forest and some homes, while for final 5 are out on a peninsula. The transition from 13 to 14 could have possibly been done better. Overall, a very good course, probably in the must-play attempts for the Hilton Head area. Thanks to the Host, the fabulous Adm.
A Nicklaus masterpiece
It is well worth the time and effort to gain access to this exclusive and private club/course. JN used the beautiful and interesting terrain to create a master piece. Conditions were fantastic, the greens rolling a 12+ on the stimpmeter and the weather being perfect made a most memorable experience. Once invited to play, be sure to take plenty of time to warm up and use the outstanding practice facility to prepare for the round of golf. Playing in the latter part of the day makes the finishing holes absolutely spectacular. Don't get distracted by the setting sun and the marvel mother nature provides. Instead, focus on the task on hand....the next shot.
The second shot on # 9 is a good representation of the shot making skills required to put up a good score. You will be using every club in the bag and bring back wonderful memories of this Nicklaus design.
