Hilton Head National Golf Club

About
Set across 300 acres of lush Carolina Lowcountry, Hilton Head National Golf Club has earned its reputation as one of the region’s premier public courses.
A unique collaboration between golf legends Gary Player and Bobby Weed, the course offers two distinct nines that complement each other beautifully. Weed designed the front nine with larger, more dramatically contoured greens to contrast and balance Player’s strategically crafted back nine.
Among the most memorable holes is the challenging par-4 sixth — bordered along its entire right side by the course’s largest lake and protected by deep pot bunkers near the green. The back nine features several standout holes, including the long and demanding 16th, which ranks as the No. 1 handicap hole for women and No. 5 for men. And finishing strong, the par-4 eighteenth tests precision with a deep marsh running the length of the narrow fairway.
Together, these elements create a course that’s scenic, strategic, and rewarding for players of all skill levels.

Always Good
I play Hilton Head National every time I am in the area. It is one of the few courses that is consistently in good shape that you can still pay less than $100 to play. I paid 89.99 this time, but had to wait till after 11 am for that rate to go down. The bigger named courses on the island are still much more than that. And many of the courses on the mainland are seem to be hit and miss conditions wise. The day I played the course was in good shape. I have seen it in better. The greens have still not quiet full recovered from aeration, but should in the next week or so. It had rained extremely hard the night before, so the course was soft, and the bunkers needed raking. But overall, the course was in very solid shape. I love the layout. There is enough room to find an errant drive. But approaches are generally pretty tight and the greens smaller with a tough up and down usually if you miss them. 12 is the hardest hole. I swear, as many times as I have played this course, I cant find a good aiming point, and I cant hit a solid tee shot. Its in my head at this point, but nevertheless, if you are in the area, give it a play. You will not be disappointed.
Not overseeded
I am a big fan of this course. It is a great layout for the average golfer, and the staff is fantastic. I have always enjoyed playing here, played here about a month ago and it was great. It has been cold since then, and when I played here yesterday I found out they no longer overseed the fairways in the winter. I was very disappointed when I found out. The greens and some tees were overseeded but the fairways are dormant and painted green. I guess this is a cost saving measure as this is about the only course in the area under $100 currently. However, I love overseeded fairways in the winter.and spring. Also, I feel like a course should never charge more than $50 to play on dead grass. Anyway, the greens were still great and the layout wonderful, but if you want actual grass you are gonna have to pay more for one of the resort courses on the island.
Alway Good
You cannot go wrong with a round at Hilton Head National just off the island. There are many golf courses in the area, and some of them are GREAT. However, HHN is a great course and as far as I could find this trip down, is the only one still under $100 to play. The fairways are wide enough to keep you from hunting for balls the whole day, but if you miss on your approach the up and downs can be really tough. Very manageable for the average golfer from the white tees and not very long. All the work you want as you can go further back. Just a really enjoyable round on a good layout in good condition for a reasonable price!
Always Solid
Hilton Head National is one of the best plays in the Hilton Head area. Cheaper than most of the on island options and usually in better shape than most of them except maybe the Sea Pines Courses. I will say it was not in the best shape I’ve ever seen it today. There were a couple of tee boxes that were pretty eat up. And a couple of fairways had some bare and thin spots. The greens weren’t as great as they are in the fall and spring. But it was still really good. It’s a really good course for the average golfer. It won’t eat you up. But will challenge you and will be really fun. The fairways are generally wide. But the up and downs around the greens can be tough. I highly recommend it. And always play it when in the area.
Never Disappoints
A round at Hilton Head National never disappoints. The course is always in good shape and the layout is outstanding for an average golfer. The greens are in GREAT shape. They roll smooth and quick. The fairways are mostly dormant currently. And the tees were generally in good shape. The layout is a little short from the white tees. But from the blues there are a couple par 4s that are too long for me. Especially on the back. It’s relatively open off the tee. But the greens are generally raised and well bunkered and make for a tough up and down. Not many forced carries. And very manageable. The back 9 is a littler tighter and has more doglegs than the front. Overall, it’s one of the best courses in the area and well worth a play.
One of the best
Been playing at Hilton Head Nationals each time I. Am in the area. If is a great golf course. Always in wonderful shape. Today was no exception. Tees and fairways were superb for late November. And the greens were so smooth and true. Maybe a hair slower than normal. But it rained a good bit earlier in the morning. Pace was 4 hour and 15 minutes on a cart path only day. The layout is outstanding. Open off the tee generally. Not a lot of forced carries. But tough up and downs around the elevated and domed greens. It used to be significantly cheaper than on island courses. The only negative is the price has risen sharply over the years. But it’s still one of my favorite courses anywhere.
One of the best courses in Hilton Head
Cannot say enough positive things about this course. Staff was super friendly, pace of play was great (3:40 round), conditions superb, and just a beautiful course. Have played probably every course on Hilton Head (other than Long Cove and Harbour Town) and would rank this the best. They keep the course in great condition, the layout is straight forward but challenging, and the terrain/flora and fauna were a visual treat. Would highly recommend this course be added as a must play when visiting Hilton Head.
One of my favorites
Hilton Head National is one of my favorite rounds there are. I stopped on the way home from Florida to play an early afternoon round on the way home. It’s a good player friendly layout. The white tees are a little short for me. And so I play a blended tee of white and blue sometimes. There are not a lot of forces carries. The ones there are are manageable. The fairways are pretty wide. But most approaches are pretty tight and make for a tough up and down. The day I played the course was in really good shape. Tees were a tad Sandy but fairways and greens in really good shape. The greens were sneaky quick and true. The only draw back is the price has steadily increased over the years. And I payed $104 with tax for an afternoon round. This is pushing my limit of price. However, it seems it’s still cheaper than many of the big name courses on the island and in just about the same condition. So save a few bucks and go play here.
Hilton Head National Is Always Top Notch
Course and greens were in amazing shape. This is the third course that we have played this week and Hilton Head National was light years ahead of the other courses which had torn up tee boxes and worn out greens. The staff at Hilton Head National was extremely helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this course. This should be a must play during your trip to Hilton Head.
Solid off-island Hilton Head golf
Hilton Head National is a fine place to round out a. golf trip in the area. It's not going to be the headliner, but it is an interesting layout where both Bobby Weed and Gary Player have worked - an unusual combination of architects. And while many resort-area courses suffer from being surrounded by houses, it is refreshing that that is not the case at HHN.
Excellent as always
Go to course when visiting the area. The conditions are always good, the greens are always great, the staff is very nice, good practice facilities. Great layout, wont beat you up if you arent playing too good. Good warmup course for tougher courses later on, while still fun and interesting to play. Very much a second shot course. Fairways are fairly open and you usually can find your ball off the tee. However, greens are generally small and elevated and fall off in all directions. So missing the green makes for a tough par. It is always a little cheaper than the on island courses and I feel like a better value for your money.
Would recommend this course.
Very pleased with both course condition and layout. Pro shop staff and on course personnel were very knowledgeable and friendly.
An okay course
Felt like the course was just okay compared to others in the area. Conditions were good, greens were pretty good even with being aerated a few weeks before. The layout is not anything special. A lot of holes that felt the same and repeated. Do not feel it is worth the price. There are other courses in the area that are better for the same price or cheaper. Range balls are pricey- $10 for a small bag. The grill had already closed halfway through our round at about 4:15. There are better options around.
One of the best
Hilton Head National is my go to round every time we are in the area. The layout is great for the average golfer, its really fun to play, and the conditions are usually as good or better than most of the courses on the island. Over the years the prices have continued to creep up. This used to be a good quality play. This time I think I paid about $125 which is alot of money to me. But the condition of the course is outstanding. The layout is great and the people are great. If you are in the Hilton Head area you want to give it a play.
Great Time
Played Hilton Head National with my wife while on vacation. HHN was as good as we had been told by several people. Very nice layout loved that there were no houses on the course. Course conditions were very good, with only a few tee boxes being thin on grass. Pace of play was good; we came in at 4:05 with an 8:16 tee time on Friday. While this course in not "on the island" it is just across the bridge and should be on your list to play.
Not worth the money
Have played this course a few times and after today not sure if I will go back. Greens were fast and in great shape. Staff was friendly and helpful. This is where the positive ends. Tee boxes were not in nice shape and not worth the amount they were charging. The rough had lots of bare spots with dirt showing including around the greens. For the amount of money range balls should be included. The pace of play was some of the worst I have seen, taking 2 1/2 hours to play 9 holes. The ranger came around several times even joking to hurry up and wait. My suggestion is to spread the tee times apart slightly more or actually get the slow groups in front of us to speed up. As of now I cannot recommend this course.
Wet but playable
A nice layout and worth the trip off the island to play this course. Even though it rained a lot the day before, it was 90 degrees off the cart path, and with GPS in the cart, that's always a good thing. Will be playing here again.
Amazing Conditions, average layout
The layout was pretty simple but the conditions were amazing. Staff was very friendly, course was expensive but definitely worth it!
