About
The 18-hole Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, S.C. is a public course that opened in 1991. Designed by Clyde Johnston, Old South Golf Links measures 6,772 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 129 and a 72.4 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.
Johnston designed Old South Golf Links in keeping with the beautiful Lowcountry's natural landscape. "Old South Golf Links was designed not only to provide an enjoyable yet challenging golf game, but also to preserve the natural beauty of the land," he said. "I felt that this was an opportunity to allow the golfer to experience up close the uniqueness of the site, its natural amenities and spectacular views."
The variety of the setting from oak forest to open pasture to tidal salt marsh, provided an opportunity to vary the design elements and strategy of play.
Old South Golf Links is open to the public seven days a week. There is a clubhouse, restaurant and full-line pro shop on site.

Golfer Reviews
Greens slow
The greens were slower than I'm used to playing. Other than that couple of oddly structured holes. But, I really enjoyed the course.
Great Course
Great round of golf - in all regards. Staff very friendly and helpful, course layout and condition very impressive. The only improvement, from my perspective, was the green speed. The ball rolled very slowly. Left 6 or 7 putts short - not like me at all.
Again, great course, great value, great day!
Challenging and Fun Course
I am a novice (1.5 years into golf), but playing the 18 holes challenged me in a good way. The course was well maintained given the 100 degree weather.
The club house menu offered a wide variety of foods and drinks. The staff was friendly.
All in all, I would come back to Old South the next time I am in the Hilton Head area.
Nice
First time in 35 years but still like the course and people
Would recommend
We had a great time and grateful to play as a twosome. . The course was not too busy for a Friday morning and pace of play was great. Scale of one to ten: Greens:7, marked down for slowness and small patches of dead grass; Fairways: 9, great shape and well taken care of; rough: 8, cut short sandy, exposed roots and general tree debris in some spots; tee boxes: 9, well taken care of and while not always flat, we found a flat spot to tee off from. Staff was great, and I appreciated not being around a bunch of homes. It was a good representation of the plant life in the area. Beautiful track.
Only Dissapointed Because of the Potential This Course Has
This course, outside of the greens, really to me is perfect. The layout is fine and exciting. The views are second to none to me. You never see a home or feel like you are just playing in someone's backyard. And the quality of the grass around the greens is truly amazing for the price. HOWEVER, the greens standout like a sore thumb. I really don't understand how the greens are in the shape they are given how nice the rest of the course is. I have been told by other locals that it has always been this way, but WHY. Why can't they be improved?? Even decent greens on all holes for this course would take this to an elite level in my mind for the price. It would be a course I play every year if they were improved. To the staff, please focus on the greens you guys do an amazing job but the greens just do not match the rest of the course
Old South
Overall a great experience. Loved the course layout.
A couple of holes required serous strategy,
Unfortunately, five of their greens were in bad shape
with sparse grass and sand. Kudos to their entire staff!
As friendly as it gets.
Neat layout
Just bad luck to be here with sanded greens but understand it needs to be done. Cool layout
Nice day
Course was recently aerified so to be expected we're sandy slow greens. No big deal. Rest of course in excellent shape. Friendly staff. Nice pro shop. Pace of play was great for a twosome. A couple of foursomes let us through. Played in 3 hours on a Friday afternoon. Will definitely be back.
Sandy greens
Online or the course should have let us know that the green were sanded. So disappointing. The rest of the course was in good shape. Plus it took us 5 hours to play and we were a twosome. So a ranger once but did nothing,
Great Course Better Communication
Old South is a great layout, friendly staff and a good value for your dollar in the Hilton Head area.
My only concern is they need to communicate better about their greens condition. Our round today several holes were practically unputtable. The fairways and around the greens were in excellent condition. It would just be nice to be told when calling or looking online to make a tee time that the greens were recently aerated.
I have played Old South several times when coming to HHI and have always enjoyed it but the greens today were bad.
Worst round of the trip
I have family that lives in town, visit multiple times a year and play all types of courses. We’ve played Old South a few times before. It’s a nice layout and usually in good shape. Overall we had good experiences and it’s a favorite to play while in town. But unfortunately our last round there will be our last round there. We were told they had done a mild aeration a week prior and the course would be healed and very playable by time we got there. It was not! Sand and holes all over the greens. Burnt spots on greens covered with sand to try and hide. Nowhere near worth the $90 they were charging. We had two foursomes almost $750 just from our group. The worst part and the main reason I will not be back was the staff. No issues with the pro shop the the cart attendants were terrible. Extremely rude and condescending. My 73yr old father tried grab advil from his golf bag as we pulled up to the cart stand after the round. The attendant yelled out “I don’t come to your job and try and do your work, do I?” I guess he assumed my father was trying to take his bag off the cart. He wanted to do that so he could stick his hand out for a tip. Just very disappointed with the whole experience.
Good aesthetics for the $
$90 was a fair rate to play here. It was busy but they kept the pace right. Fairways are narrow in spots. I really liked the feel and look of the course. Saw some gators, lots of Spanish moss, and cool squirrel-like creatures. Greens were terrible, 3/10. Super slow, bumpy from aeration and burnt to death. The course staff were nice and the pro shop had good merch. I’d do it again, but I’d give myself some strokes for the bad greens.
