Old South Golf Links
About
The 18-hole Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, S.C. is a public course that opened in 1991. Designed by Clyde Johnston, Old South Golf Links measures 6,772 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 129 and a 72.4 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.
Johnston designed Old South Golf Links in keeping with the beautiful Lowcountry's natural landscape. "Old South Golf Links was designed not only to provide an enjoyable yet challenging golf game, but also to preserve the natural beauty of the land," he said. "I felt that this was an opportunity to allow the golfer to experience up close the uniqueness of the site, its natural amenities and spectacular views."
The variety of the setting from oak forest to open pasture to tidal salt marsh, provided an opportunity to vary the design elements and strategy of play.
Old South Golf Links is open to the public seven days a week. There is a clubhouse, restaurant and full-line pro shop on site.

Best bang for your buck
A very well maintained course just off of Hilton Head Island. Island courses wanting more for courses in bad conditions. Old South has some challenging holes due to the water. But if you hit it straight, water is not an issue. Gotta carry on a few tee boxes but nothing too serious. Will definitely play again when staying on HHI. I don't want to forget to mention Maria, the cart girl. Super friendly and even went back to the clubhouse to restock for some drinks we wanted.
Marshes and Greens
Starter was great. Let us go early to be a twosome. We didn’t catch up to the group ins front of us til the 5th hole. Back nine was backed up with three groups playing a hole a few times but things moved along. Irritating that grounds crews were mowing fairways in the middle of the day and didn’t get out of the middle or at least stop for play. Fairways were dry and sparse at times. Greens were slow and fuzzy.
It was a nice time.
We were 15 minutes behind pace of play, but it wasn't too bad. At least they had a ranger on the course monitoring. He stopped by to apologize and say he was trying to get a group holding us up to move faster. That is very much appreciated. Overall a very good time. Nice course.
Meh
Normally I play a very nice Georgia course where the greens are immaculate and the fairways are fully grown in and well maintained. It usually runs about $110 on the weekends, which is already on the higher end for that area, but the conditions usually justify the price.
I played Old South Golf Links yesterday and it was $137, so I went into the round pretty excited expecting something at least on par—or better—than what I’m used to locally. Right off the bat, I got paired up with a really good twosome, which made the round more enjoyable and kept things moving in a good rhythm.
The overall experience was a mix of highs and lows. The course itself had a solid layout and there were moments where it really showed its potential, but when you factor in the price point, I expected a bit more consistency across the board. Coming from a course where the conditioning and presentation are very dialed in, I found myself comparing everything pretty directly.
At $137, I was expecting a “premium” feel throughout the entire round—tee to green, practice areas, and general course conditioning. Instead, it felt more like a course that has great moments but doesn’t fully justify that higher weekend rate compared to what I normally play.
That said, the people I got paired with were great, which always helps a round of golf feel better no matter what the course is like. And anytime you’re out playing, especially on a new track, there’s still value in just being outside and competing against your own game.
Overall, I left feeling like it was a decent round, but not quite the value or experience I expected for the price.
Prices went way up
This course used to be one of the more reasonable priced courses to play when we came down. Prices have gone up dramatically and I don’t think the conditions have improved dramatically.
Incredible.
My wife and I played Old South our first time in the Hilton Head/ Bluffton area. The course itself is one of the most picturesque courses we have had the opportunity to play (including some high end northeast tracks) The course was in great shape, a great test of golf. Every hole is different. Greens were a bit slow, but the area has been in draught conditions, thinking they are dumping water on them. The staff was very friendly.
We got paired with a local couple. They were also great. This place makes us want to move to the area.
Must Play!
First time playing the course - excellent! Super friendly staff, great course layout, pace of play was great. The course was in excellent condition, greens were great. Absolutely recommend to others.
Very nice course in great condition. Back 9 more challenging than front.
Old South 1st time
Course was great!! Fully grassed fairways and fast greens.. Can't wait to play again. Very good price and loved the layout! Challenging and fun.
Great public course!
This is one of our favorite courses in HHI/Bluffton area. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the course is scenic and in really good shape. And you can't beat the price. Highly recommend!
Simply GREAT!
I played Old South during COVID and recently booked another round through GolfNow at a great rate. The course was in excellent condition from tee to green, with well-maintained fairways and smooth putting surfaces. It’s a thoughtfully designed layout—challenging enough to keep things interesting, yet still very playable for the average golfer. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone in the area and am already looking forward to getting one more round in before I head out in a few days.
Nice course
Staff was very friendly. Cool layout especially out in the march. Nice clubhouse and driving range. Very well run.
