Angeles National Golf Club
About
Angeles National Golf Club is the only Nicklaus Design course in Los Angeles County. It is tucked away in the Angeles National Forest. This championship course is known for being one of the area's most challenging with tough greens that are lightning fast and more than 50 strategically placed bunkers. There are also two lakes and a creek that come into play. Golfers should be prepared for long par 4s and demanding carries over ravines and barrancas. Not only is it a golf course that requires length, you'll also need accuracy. Angeles National Golf Club finishes with a par 4 that plays from an elevated tee alongside the rushing creek that edges the left of the fairway and to the right of the landing area there's a deep bunker. To the right, the green is bordered by deep grass hollows and bunkers and there is a lake to the left.

Birthday Round with my Dad
The course was in great condition! Fairways and greens were prefect.
Good but not great
They are doing a fantastic job of pricing out golfers who enjoys good courses particularly in Southern California. Greens fees have almost doubled post covid shutdown and this will make golfers shop for courses with reasonable fees. Angeles national is no where near a $150 course. I've played Pebble Beach, Kapalua (plantation), Cabo del sol, Shadow Creek (Vegas), Spyglass, Palmer Private (Palm Springs) to name a few so I know fantastic courses and priced appropriately. If you want to play an overpriced good course, by all means...
Not Bad
Enjoyed round. Slow back nine (which actually was the front nine). GPS was nice as well.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. Thank you for the 4 stars! We aim for a 5-star experience, so we always welcome and appreciate feedback for improvement. Thank you for playing Angeles National Golf Club and we hope to see you back soon for your best round yet!
What happened to this place?
I hadn't been back here in several years. Had thought that the price was not appropriate for the place. I'd been avoiding the place because of that, and because of the way they had been dealing with customers, mainly, poorly. There's too much hype with the place, and clearly, it has gone down, way down over the past few years, and that's not because of Covid. They actually had an opportunity to fix a few things during the downturn, and the course should have grown in, but they've wrecked a lot of it, and it just looks and plays way worse.
Starting with the Range: the range has been cut in half!!! So there's only about 12 hitting stalls, if that, if there's lessons going on, there's about 8. Which is nuts, because when this place was busy, 5, 6 years ago, the range easily had 25 spots, and it was always packed, all day long. Today the range was empty in the afternoon. Shocking. Part of it is the price of the balls. Ridiculous to charge $14 for a medium bucket for scrappy range balls that are all hodge-podge varieties. Double shocking.
There was no attendant at the range. There was no club-washer bucket at the range. There is no shuttle to the range like they used to have it from the parking lot cart area. The range machine takes credit card only. The range putting green was closed.
There was nobody to greet anybody to pick up bags to place into carts, so you had to walk all the way down and then into the shop. Which is fine, but there was a small tournament going on there today and there was nobody there to help these players. Shocking.
The putting green in front of the shop was good. I expected that to be the same out on the course - it wasn't.
The Course: There's no starter. Just be sure to tee off at the set time for your group, as it warns you on the LCD screen!
Some of the tees were lumpy and not flat, and had dead spots, and some of the tee markers had been specifically placed on those dead spots. Crazy. And some of the tee markers were all the way at the back of the tee box that there was no 2-club length to drop back, you literally fell off the tee if you teed it back too far. Clearly the greenkeerpers have not been educated about the rules of golf!
The fairways were decent. A bit soft compared to what they would be in the summer, when it's dry and hard, and the same went for the greens. The greens looked nice, but we know they can paint them, and they looked painted, not cut too much, and were very grainy, and so were not as fast or smooth as they should be for a course that charges this exorbitant price.
Hole 5's bunkers were under-repair, the one near the green had the underlay sheets being placed but there was no warning or sign about any of the work. Same went for the 18th, the bunkers around the greens had mounds yet to be flattened, but no sign or warning.
There was a little sign at the 17th green about GUR, but it was a little sign stuck to the edge of the front bunker, but it was hard to tell whether it was about the new bunker, or the new grass around the bunker which was soft and wet.
For the prices they charge, you would have expected everything to be in place, like they used to be. But not any more, I guess. Which is why I hadn't re-visited. I wouldn't pay full price here, ever.
Great field
It's great field. Golfers playing this filed are also very nice and gentle.

way overpriced-no bag pickup, had to get your own ice and water-despite too high round cost had to pay for range balls-way too slow play 5hours sucks

Painfully slow golf
It's a great golf course, in reasonably good condition. Spacing tee times 8 minutes apart may generate additional revenue, at the expense of alienating return visitors. To compound the torture of waiting on EVERY teebox, a red warning message would pop up to advise how far behind the pace of play we were tracking. Never saw a Marshal on the course to push along the slow groups. I would consider a revisit during the week to see if it's any better.

5 hour round
i like the course, but it took five hours to play and waited on every hole, no marshals to speed up play.. no water or cart girl on the course, only one person working at the snack shop so i could not get anything at the turn because the line was to long.. never play on the weekend again.

Overpriced for the course
Fun time but very slow pace and very expensive. $175 and no free range balls ?

Stay Away
It sounds cliché, but I really am not one to write these types of complaints, but my recent round was so absurd that I felt compelled to write something.
I’ve played Angeles National regularly since it opened and enjoy the course. My round on 9/18 was by far the worst experience.
Golf has obviously boomed in popularity since Covid, which is why I’m willing to pay a premium to play at Angeles. For $175 my expectation of Angeles is the same as any other Nicklaus course. I would like to use the range to warm up before my round and have a reasonable pace of play, somewhere between 4 and 4.5 hours. Today, neither of those things occurred.
I booked a 7:28am time so I could enjoy a regular paced round, as noted above. I realize when playing as a twosome, there are periods of waiting, but I regularly play as a twosome at Angeles and the pace is normally fine. Today there was a group of 12 that were playing in the three groups ahead of us that held up play the entire round. It is not an exaggeration to say we waited on almost every shot on every hole. As the GPS messaging in the cart pointed out continuously on my screen, if you can’t keep up the pace of play, then you may be asked to leave. According to the message, the expected pace of play is 4:10. We were well behind that all day and there was no a marshal available to move groups along. At the turn, I went into the pro shop to tell someone about the pace, but no one was available. I seriously considered walking off after 9 holes.
When I went into the pro shop after my round to discuss these issues with the starter I was told that Saturday is the busiest day. I’m aware of this, as I always play early Saturday mornings (between 7:20am and 8:30am), so I can play at a decent pace. Even on a slow day at Angeles, I can generally finish in around 4.5 hours. The round today was almost 5.5 hours. I’m sorry, but that’s ridiculous, especially for $175. If I was playing Rancho Park or the Wilson/Harding courses on a Saturday at 7:28am, I would expect a 5+ hour round, but the green fee of $75 would lower my expectations. And if I played at one of those courses, the range would be available beforehand. For the other courses I play regularly – Rustic Canyon, Industry Hills, Moorpark GC – the range is open when the course opens. These courses offer a similar type of golf experience that I expect from Angeles.
If you are going to charge $175 for a round of golf, then the experience should match the price tag.
Additionally, I sent the same comments to the club via email on Saturday and 5 days later I have not even received an acknowledgement. Really unprofessional and disappointing. The Angeles "experience" is not what it used to be and I will no longer play there unless the price tag is commensurate with what they offer.
Great Course
Course was in fantastic conditions. Enjoyed the layout. Good for all skill levels really.
Hi, fernando562. Thank you so much for the great review. We are glad you had an incredible time, and we hope to see you again soon! Thanks for choosing Angeles National Golf Club.
Fantastic condition
Course was in amazing shape even with the grounds crew updating the bunkers which look great.. did not find myself
I’m any of them but had I on the back nine which I started on #10 I would have been content getting out. Fairways were softer than usual which I will never be upset with. Monday rate of $95 well worth the money
Hi, Paul6421112. Thank you so much for the great review. We are glad you had an incredible time, and we hope to see you again soon! Thanks for choosing Angeles National Golf Club.
Glorified Muni
I dont understand this course. I'm a 5 handicap and generally love tough courses but not this one. In terms of visuals and conditioning its a glorified muni: flat, brown, gravel in the bunkers, and poor visuals off the tee. Its difficult without being interesting. It somewhat resembles links golf on some holes with mounding in the fairway that sends the ball in random directions (sometimes to the desert) but with no strategic options to balance that out. Honestly the worst Nicklaus course I have played.

Exhaustingly painful (pretty to look at... but maybe just take a walk without the clubs)
I love a hard golf course. And don't mind blind shots or places you should or should not end up being a bit of a surprise but boy oh boy. You hit one you think is in the fairway and you still end up searching in the cactus off the side for balls. When we got there the guy standing behind us said... you better buy a dozen... he wasn't wrong. I go through multiple rounds with the exact same ball (so much so that it gets beat up). If I played here every week I would never ever have that problem.
We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review. We age glad you could enjoy the challenge of the course. Please remember tee selection is very important here, if you are losing balls we suggest trying a different tee box option until you find the most enjoyable ones for you! We would love to know how we can earn those last two stars next time! Thanks for playing Angeles National Golf Club.
Nice but difficult course
The course layout is really nice but difficult to play. There are multiple holes where you have to carry at least over 150 yards, otherwise your ball will end up in bushes and rocks and unplayable. It's not suitable for most seniors since they can't carry that far. For young guys, you need to bring lots of balls because you will lose lots of balls. The scenery should be really beautiful in winter and spring when the surrounding mountains are green, but they are yellow and dry in the summer. Overall, a really nice course but on the expensive side.
