Angeles National Golf Club
About
Angeles National Golf Club is the only Nicklaus Design course in Los Angeles County. It is tucked away in the Angeles National Forest. This championship course is known for being one of the area's most challenging with tough greens that are lightning fast and more than 50 strategically placed bunkers. There are also two lakes and a creek that come into play. Golfers should be prepared for long par 4s and demanding carries over ravines and barrancas. Not only is it a golf course that requires length, you'll also need accuracy. Angeles National Golf Club finishes with a par 4 that plays from an elevated tee alongside the rushing creek that edges the left of the fairway and to the right of the landing area there's a deep bunker. To the right, the green is bordered by deep grass hollows and bunkers and there is a lake to the left.

Nice course and layout but...
Angeles National is a well designed and enjoyable Nicklaus course. Greens are true and in nice condition, as are the fairways. The tee boxes were somewhat uneven, but a minor consideration.
The big issue was on hole 15. I pulled my tee shot into a bunker and when I drove my cart up, I received a message saying that I had entered a restricted area and that my cart was locked. Not "put it in reverse and back out" but completely and immovably locked. I tried to call the clubhouse with no luck. I finally had to ditch it there and caught a ride with my playing partner for the final few holes. Not a good way to end the round. I want to add that I'm not someone who drives up to greens, and always stay on the cart path whenever possible. I could not anticipate having this happen while driving along the outside of the bunker to play my ball. Otherwise, I had a good time.
Difficult layout. Good condition
Overall one of the best public courses in LA if you don’t mind the drive out. Carts are GPS/score tracking. One of the few courses played recently with level tee boxes. Some bare spots in fairway but minimal. Greens were pristine.
Layout is difficult. Need to play strategic and straight to be in good position.
Pace of play was never a problem. Sub 4 hour round.

Dry and hard
Course is very dry and hard. Your clubs have a very good chance to just bounce off the ground. Needs more water on the fairways for approach shots.

BYOB and Food
Gorgeous course and layout. Greens were really nice. Bit firm so the don't really bite but rolled real nice. My experience was interesting one. Tee time was 1130. Got there at 11. Snack bar was "open" with a sign saying they would be back at 1140. They weren't. By the turn (1:30) they were closed. I mean thats ok I would have just like to have known to bring my own beer and food and water. Then there was a homeless man singing with his guitar on the tee box of 12 and would walk down the fairways singing and strumming. Couldn't call the course facility at all to get ahold of anyone. Message said just to email. So that was my experience. Only play as of now if u can get a discount
Covid rules
Played out here twice during covid. It plays hard fast and hot but is one of the best public options in the area.
Thank you for your review, jjmirkin. We will pass along your experience to our team at Angeles National Golf Club. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Love the course, but pace of play issues
Angeles National is a great golf course, it’s in good shape,, the staff are super nice and the Covid-19 procedures are appropriate and well executed. Unfortunately pace of play, which has always been somewhat of an issue, is a real problem lately. There is no evident course marshal presence, so one slow group causes real issues. I get that we are in weird times, but it is still $90 to play midweek. Please have someone on the golf course ensuring pace of play is appropriate so all players have a fun day.
Good track/Low value for the money
Our golf group used to play Angeles all the time. We don't anymore. But when we couldn't find tee times at Rustic or Moorpark, we played two days back-to-back at Angeles.
First things first, the course is really good. Even in extreme heat (and it was about 100 both days), the fairways and greens were in really good shape. Always fast & firm, the greens were surprisingly receptive but challenging.
Here's the "but". The reason we stopped playing Angeles is that it's really poorly managed and a lousy comparative value for the money. Look, I'm down to give anyone some slack for Covid, but I think it needs to cut both ways.
On scorchingly hot days, for our $135.00, there was no water available and no coolers on the carts. There were no beverage carts and the snack stand closed at 4:00 on Saturday and 3:00 on Sunday. C'mon: you couldn't even buy a bottle of water at the turn. Forget about Covid killing me, I might die of thirst. Seriously, our group was massively dehydrated at the end of the round.
This is an ongoing theme at Angeles National. You honestly feel taken advantage of. I don't know who is managing this place, but there is a reason it's the only place you can get on at peak hours during Covid. I mean, they would sell A TON of water and beer by sending out a cart girl. It's simple math, not complicated.
They can't trade on Nicklaus' name forever. Angeles National could be one of the really cool things about L.A. golf. Start appreciating clientele and showing them some value and smart golfers will start coming back regularly.

Good course/low value for the money
I've played Angeles for years. It used to be my golf group's go-to , but it's not any more. The problem is value for the money.
Angeles is a really good course. Well designed and currently in really good shape. The problem is that at $135/round it's just not nearly as good a value as Rustic Canyon, MoorPark or several other good public tracks in the area. Perhaps it's the Nicklaus brand, but again, the value's just not there.
We played today on a really hot day. Sure it's Covid and all, but at $135 bucks, I have some minimal expectations. At 100 degrees, there are no coolers on the carts. They gave us a bag of ice. Lasted 3 holes. We teed off at 2:30 and made the turn in exactly 2 hours. Snack stand closed. No water, no cold beer, no one to be found. C'mon guys, you're running a golf course. At least keep the snack stand open until the last group has made the turn.
Honestly, it's just that Angeles no longer makes you feel like you're a welcome guest there. And that's a bummer. It could be one of the really cool things about LA golf, but they're missing a trick. Just think it's a result of not-so-good management. That's why I'll take Rustic or any of the other higher-end public courses anytime if they are open for booking.
Book Angeles if you can get it for $100 bucks or less. More than that and the value's not there.
Pace of play
No marshals due to COVID I believe pace of play was great on front but waiting on every hole on back. Even still 4:15 round was achieved because of individual carts... great track

Good Experience
Overall a good experience at Angeles National. The course is long enough and wide enough to pull driver on the majority of par 4's and all of the par 5's. Pace of play was perfect as we rarely had to wait to swing. On cart GPS was convenient. There are three concerns I had. First, the course was very dry. Hitting from the fairway was not like hitting on their lush green practice range. Second, the greens had been recently aerated but was not mentioned when booking on Golf Now. Third the price seems a bit expensive especially when the fairways and greens aren't perfect. Challenging course in pretty good condition.

Great course. Challenging and well kept
Course is in great shape. Fun to play. Per 5s are a bit awkward as you may not be able to hit driver.
