La Cantera Golf Club opened in 1995, when it also hosted one of the oldest PGA Tour events, the Texas Open. It is no wonder the spot was chosen, with its numerous natural water features, mature oaks, and limestone rock outcroppings it provides the perfect terrain for a challenging round. There are also 75 white sand bunkers strategically placed throughout the golf course. In combination with the spectacular views provided by the course’s elevation changes, the course has quickly gained favor as one of the best public-access golf courses in the country.

Beautiful Course

I went here to take my brother on a great golf outing before he had to jump on a plane to Cleveland, OH later that afternoon. I'm not an avid golfer (once a month...maybe), but this was wide open and forgiving course that was great to play on. My brother enjoyed himself on our outing and I'm sure, when he returns, we may return.

Extremely disappointed

The round started off fairly good. The fairways were manicured and the greens good. However, as the round progressed, the grass on the fairways began to disappear and the greens were not mowed and they were very bumpy. The last 4-5 holes were the worst. The greens were brown and no grass and very then even more bumpy. I spent a significant amount of my monthly golf budget to play this former PGA course and was VERY, VERY disappointed in the overall condition of this RESORT golf course. I do not believe I will play this course again - especially at the price they want.

Roller coasters, wind and a Fun Ride

Beautiful but windy day makes many of the elevated tee boxes testers. Course condition great all but 17th green which was unlike all the others and plagued with some damaging disease. Practice facilities are first rate so come early. Enjoy the screams from the nearby roller coaster as you tee off on #7 as you scream too as the wind on that tee shot hits your ball.:)

Disappointed

Very slow play, especially for a resort course. Had to wait to tee on the first nine due to slow playing ladies foursome in a tournament. Marshalls told us that they would speed them up, but never did. By ninth hole we had three groups waiting on the tee.
I expect this on a muni, but not a high price resort.
I will not go back.

A fun and generous course to play

This was a good course. We played the Palmer course on Mon. and Wed. Then we played this course on Friday. The course was in great shape considering the time of year when most courses are in the dormant stage. It has lots of room on either side of the fairways and the greens roll true. What you see is what it is. Now that we have moved to Texas, I will play this course often.

About What I expected

Played Feb 18, 2014 on a mild day. Fairways and rough was dormant but greens had some recent new growth (however they did not putt particularly smooth or ture....but this is what you get this time of year I suppose).

Typical resort type atmosphere with bag boys and valets with their hands out, although everyone was friendly.

Course is surprisingly hilly and would be a bear to walk. Played the gold tees (6400 yeards) but it played shorter with many elevated tees and the fairways running fast.

Overall a good experience given I only paid $56 for the green fee. Would have been disappointed had I paid significantly more.

Home of the Texas Open (1995-2009)

The course offers a nice up and down ride with just a few turns here and there. I think it's safe to say there are good sized bunkers around every green but not really any water to worry about. Most creeks will be dry but you will have a couple of carries to make. I was pleased with the condition of the winter fairway grass when I played in January. I can only imagine how nice it must be when the weather turns warmer and everything comes into bloom. Greens had a nice mixture of undulation and rolled very true. However, during our outing we found them very fast; a winter situation perhaps. The staff were all very courteous and readily available. Remember, this is not just a golf course -- it's part of a resort. It's certainly on the high side price wise. But if you're considering it, then you can obviously afford it and/or are looking to treat yourself. I'd certainly like to make a long weekend of it, play both courses, and stay at the resort.

A roller coaster of a ride

Simply put, the Resort Course at La Cantera Resort is fun, just like the amusement park, Fiesta Texas, next door. With so many elevated tees, including one that looks right down on a roller coaster, your ball never seems to come down if you hit it good. There are a couple of really good risk-reward par 5s, some tougher holes and a few short par 4s, making for a really nice mix. It's also the former home of the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open, so there's a little history here, too. Great resort.

Bringing Up the Rear in SA Resort Golf

We have been playing here since they built this course almost twenty years ago. When this tract was finished it was the only upscale golf in San Antonio except for the private venues.
USAA owns this property and Troon golf manages the course. The PGA was induced to move the Texas Open here from the classic Tillinghast course at Oak Hills Country Club.

Many PGA pros disliked La Cantera because it was a very hilly and gimmicky. Over the years the leading money winners avoided La Cantera because of its quirky design and an excess of uphill and side hill fairways. Tiger Woods only played here once in his rookie year.

This Weiskopft-Moorish design is the least playable
resort course in San Antonio.

The golfer faces the #1 hole and #2 hardest handicap holes to start with. Hole #1 is a monster 600 yard plus hole and #2 is a blind second shot to a small elevated green.
This design is unbalanced with a lot of trick holes like #7, a short par 4, where the drive appropriately heads into the roller coaster at Six Flags Amusement Park.
Hole #8 and #16 are also two very short par 4's. Hole #9 and 10 can seem ridiculous because of the depth of the hill on the approach to the green. Hole #12 is the signature hole but it is completely changed now without a waterfall.

We arrived early for our prepaid tee time. There was a big rain/cold front forecast to move into the area within 2 hours. There were no golfers on the course at 8:45 am and the next group was not scheduled to tee off until 10:30.
I spoke with Laura, one of the pro shop managers, about teeing off earlier. Laura was very rude and uncooperative. She initially refused to allow us to tee off early. Then grudgingly agreed to permit us to tee off. This "attitude" was disappointing and surprising, when compared to that of the sibling Palmer Course operation.
There is a starter here named Bobby. He lacks courtesy and probably tries too hard to play policeman. He was talking like a bully until he found out that we were not tourists and have played here before.
Contrast this guy with the starter Bob and Marshall Sullivan at the Palmer course.
Their GPS system here is a constant irritant. The computer generated chimes, video displays and warning voice are over the top. This is an intrusive monitor system that sounds like a nagging Big Brother. I suggest using your own GPS and disable their GPS. My Garmin was more accurate and quicker to respond.
This course is not in good shape. The tee boxes have just been roto tilled, the fairways are cut uneven, and the greens are very thin and bumpy.

La Cantera Resort golf course is much less of a golf course than the Palmer Course next door. When you add the attitude in the pro shop and on-course happenings, this makes a very negative experience for the golfer.
Tourism accounts for at least seventy five per cent of their tee times and tourists can play sporadically.
This is not a good place for locals to play.

Very nice course , playable for any level.

Cloudy but pleasant day but slow turnout of golfers. Able to go out 45 minutes early on our tee time and only caught the slow play group near 15th hole . Starter and ranger on course did great job and course is really nice with a few great views from tees.

Above Average Course

There was a slight rain all day and the course played long. But I would to come back on a day without the rain to give it an honest assessment of the course. I would only play it again if I could get the Hot Deal on golf now I paid. My experience was not worth the $125 regular greens fee.

Absolutely Fabulous

It's been several years since I've played this course. Got a great deal from Golf Now. The course was in great shape. Greens a little slower than they look but still good. Excellent super friendly staff. Regret not having played sooner. Fantastic views and memories of the Texas Open. Will be back.
