La Cantera Golf Club opened in 1995, when it also hosted one of the oldest PGA Tour events, the Texas Open. It is no wonder the spot was chosen, with its numerous natural water features, mature oaks, and limestone rock outcroppings it provides the perfect terrain for a challenging round. There are also 75 white sand bunkers strategically placed throughout the golf course. In combination with the spectacular views provided by the course’s elevation changes, the course has quickly gained favor as one of the best public-access golf courses in the country.

Great day of golf

What a treat to get to play this course again. You have the option of valet or self park. All the staff is trained very well to serve. They are very alert and attentive to whatever your needs are. The people in the clubhouse, setting you up in your carts, starter, Marshall. Everyone

Has a class system, but nice golf course

Loved the golf course, it had several interesting holes, especially the one that faces the roller coaster. Real fun putting while people are screaming:-)
Got there early as a twosome. When we asked why other twosomes were going out and we weren't added, they said it was based on the discounted rate we paid on line. Not sure I get it. It you're worried about pace of play, why would you hold players back because they paid a rate that you offered to get them to play your course in the first place. Starter was a nice game, but his hands were tied. The 2 singles we played with were fun anyway..

Good condition, staff is very friendly.

I've played this course before, but I always enjoy coming back to it. It was in good condition again, same as it was when I played it a couple of years ago.

Great Layout, Mediocre Service

This is a beautiful course with a great layout. Every hole is high quality and very interesting. It is a great mix of long and short holes, with reachable par 5's and lengthy par 3's. The views are spectacular, especially number 7, which looks over six flags and from which downtown San Antonio can be seen. The cart all have GPS

On the downside - the greens are not in the best shape, as they are grainy and slow. Considering the quality of the course, the staff is below par, as most are unfriendly and inattentive. I played late in the afternoon on a recent Friday and the pace of play was about 4 1/2 hours; we seemed to wait on every shot. We had to get another cart on number 10 because our battery died, and they charge $5.25 per beer, which is excessive.

Despite these drawbacks, I do recommend the course due to the quality of the layout.

fun course and great staff

We played the Palmer on Monday and found the greens to be unfairly difficult. Resort course is more fun and fair. We got stuck behind a tournament on Monday and took 5.5 hrs to play so they gave us all a free round of golf. SWEET!

Premier course

A challenging course even from the white tees. The elevation changes and views are spectacular. The early season and drought have the fairways and rough suffering. The course is finely manicured. I found the bermuda greens difficult to read as the grain affected every putt. The staff was most friendly and helpful. A good time.

Nice course, but.......

Played this course on a Saturday morning. I had played the Palmer course the day before and just preferred the Palmer course much better. The course was in good shape, beautiful venue, but I just found the course to be average.

A real challenge with beautiful views all around the course.

This was my first time to play the Resort Course at La Cantera, but I've been there several times. I've walked the course while watching the pros play in the Texas Open before it moved across town. The layout of the course is one of the most challenging I've played in my 53 year golfing history. However, the course condition was not what I observed when the course was hosting the PGA tour players. The greens were in really good condition, but the fairways were typical of what you might expect when playing in mid-Winter of a multi-year drought in the area -- less than great. The staff were all terrific, starting with the young fellows at the bag drop to the folks in the pro shop and the volunteer starter. An overall extremely enjoyable golf outing. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to put their game to the test, but -- bring lots of golf balls and a good sand shot with you!!!

Pricey but nice

The Resort Course at La Cantera is pricey but nice. The view of downtown San Antonio from the 10th green is impressive. It was fun to see the carved stones commemorating past champions of the PGA tour event that was once played at La Cantera.

Love the views. Staff is super polite!

Wide open fairways make this course a joy to play, but be careful as there are many well placed bunkers to make you pay should you choose to take risks. A wide range of tee boxes to challenge golfers of all handicaps. The staff is top notch and some of the nicest people you'll ever encounter.

Challenging layout with a lot of great features.

After playing this course I can fully understand why it was home to a PGA tour event. It requires careful shot placement and shows no quarter on a missed shot. The greens were smooth and consistent, but pretty tough to read correctly. There are a lot of elevation changes, sloped fairways and well placed bunkers to demand your "A" game. The signature hole, a short par 4 was nicely laid out and came with the added bonus of roller coaster views in the background. The staff was very friendly and quite helpful. Overall a really good course that is worth the play. I do, however have a few negatives from the experience to share. First, the clubhouse restaurant only offered breakfast tacos, at 10:30 AM. The main room just up the hill was serving a buffet. it was quite pricey, yet sparse in selection and quality. My second negative is that this is one of the feature resort courses of the area that commands a premium price and yet they do not overseed the fairways to keep the "A" quality conditions you expect from a course of this stature. I suggest waiting for the warmer months to play this course.

A real joy

From the tee box to the green, this course is first rate. The greens are moderate to challenging. Sand traps are well maintained - if you happen to experience them. Overall, one of the best courses in San Antonio.

Watch your belongings

My rangefinder was taken from my cart at the practice range. There was lots of staff, only 5 players including me and I played with 4 of them. The Proshop didn't seem concerned. I was out $300 and frustrated the rest of the day. Fair warning don't let them have access to your stuff.

The setup is great

This course has great views, A course like this where a PGA event used to be played. They should overseed the fairways and greens, some greens were fast and some were slow, no one in our group could get the speed of the greens right, all of us were 2 -5 handicap. The price was right, booking on golfnow.
