La Quinta Mountain: #15
#15 on La Quinta's Mountain is laying along the base of the mountains - stay tight to the base and go for this par 5 in two. The green stays snug up against the base and will not be in full view.

Terrible Course Conditions - Stay Away!

I have played this course for the past 15 years and really have enjoyed it. Great layout, views and playability.

Until this year! The range was closed. No GPs on the carts. We were warned by the starter that there was some water on the course but did not anticipate the stinking mud pits on holes 1 and 9.

The worst part was the greens. The starter warned us that they had redesigned the greens to the original specs. He told us they were very hard and we wouldn’t be able to stop our shots and he wasn’t kidding. Our foursome spent all round driving the ball well and watching our approach shots hit the front and the middle of the greens and roll off. The greens were brown and rough.

The course should be closed until it’s playable. Don’t waste your money on this mess for the next couple of months!

Beware when booking Mountain Course - Bait and Switch

This is the 2nd time I booked mountain and was switched to dunes when I arrived at the course. We were told the Mountain course was flooded and Clubhouse said they sent emails to 3rd party we booked thru (Supreme golf) but nobody received anything.

We had 2 foursomes celebrating a bachelor party and needless to say we were dissapointed when we arrived and were told we were playing dunes and our tee-time was delayed 90 minutes.

Granted the weather was not ideal (30 mph wind gusts), but the conditions of the course was not great. Tee boxes were small and uneven, bunkers had NO SAND in them, greens were not rolling smooth, etc. Back 9 plays more into the mountains and is much more enjoyable than the front, which has some very uninspiring holes.

Very dissapointing experience. Too many great courses in the desert to ever come back here.

Scenic and fun course to play

The Mountain course was an interesting combination of beauty with some risk reward. While the back nine has some beautiful holes, this is also when the course tightens and is surrounded by homes. The greens were all new which made them quite challenging. Speed was up and they were extremely firm so holding a green was challenging. Overall it was a great test and two of us engoyed the two two singles that we were paired with.

Not what it once was

I've played this course each time we have visited LaQuinta over the past decade. The back 9 is the highlight of the course with wonderful views and challenging holes. Unfortunately, the recent redesign has made the course less appealing. The greens were rough and not really rolling true.

We have also had an issue with certain groups playing that will hit into our group even though we are keeping up with and on pace with the group ahead of us. During this round, the group behind us hit into us on 4 different occasions. They stopped once I went back and addressed them.

A Pete Dye Course I liked

As part of the PGA Family Championship, we played the Mountain course. The greens were just redone lie the Dunes but they are far more playable than the Dunes.

The back 9 closing holes are truly memorable. You work your way into the mountains and the views are amazing.

Off the tee, aggressive play is rewarded if you execute your shot.

Once the greens mature this course will be 5 star in my opinion.

Typical resort course

Decent layout. The back 9 seems better than the front. This course seems plagued with slow play, lots of waiting. Staff seemed more interested in giving you directions to leave before dark than speeding up play so you could finish. Not worth the twilight discount because the best part of the course seems to be the back nine and you won’t get to see it with the slow pace of play.

Terrible Value

Course was in poor shape. Greens were dry and wouldn't hold approach shots. Tee boxes are in terrible condition. Play was super slow - 5 + hours. Had to quit on 16 as there were 3 groups waiting on a par 3.

Be prepared

Setting is just right. It's against the mountain to give that feeling this is the course how it will play. So it's kind of a links style, great holes, the second hole you better have your long irons warmed up. ( only down fall is irons at the range only). From white 175 yds. Water running down the left side up to the green, jetting back and forth to the green. Right side up and down hills just to give you that awkward lie. and the green, size of a nickle.....good luck!. The rest is Pete design to challenge your game. But that's the front nine lualling you to sleep, get to 10 you better coffee up, Red Bull or whatever it takes to get you fired up. Back nine your playing in and really along the mountain. You put your pencil and play and enjoy the moments. The 16th regardless of your play you have to play off the black or whites. It's like Pete was sitting there with favorite drink on his Adirondack chair to design this par 3. It's a Pete Dye moment hole. Awesome view. Know problem recommending this course to a friend, enemy, stranger on the street. A must play.

Yikes

This course is not in good shape and is a difficult course,

there are no signs and it is confusing to find the way to the next hole.

Hole #9 is undergoing some changes and there are no signs to indicate what and where a player should play, as well some employee stands out on the green shouting at people where to take carts. Frankly i fouund the way players being treated quite disgusted ! some well placed signs would eliminate the confustion.

Not sure i would play either of these two courses, again , ever !

Disappointment everywhere

Booked a round at PGA West Mountain course with the anticipation of a premium course and had an entirely different experience. Course was in terribly poor condition for the price of admission. Carts don’t have gps on them whereas budget course around here do…. Extremely lame scrambling to find an app to give us gps information that is now standard on today’s golf courses.

Greens were newly planted and basically hard packed dirt with some tiny hybrid green coming up. Greens were crunching under our feet. There was numerous places throughout the course that was under heavy repair and roped off including a large portion of hole 9 that was an open sink hole.

Pace of play was terrible. We spent 10+ minutes waiting to tee off at nearly every hole. Tee time was at 1pm and starter told us we might get through hole 12…. We finished 14 holes and missed signature holes through the mountain ranges.

Overall I wish we had gone anywhere else. We played shadow mountain the day before and should have gone back there. Other than stunning views, everything else was lacking or just plain disappointing imo. Disappointing for a course that was towards the top of my list for the area. We wont be going back with so many better options in the area.

Slow pace and slow greens. Hope that the course plays a bit better once the seeding has grown out a little.
