Challenging course but needs work!
First of all, I generally only play this course when I get an 'extra cheap rate', which I did (<24.00) before 1 pm (11:30)! Overall, I like the layout of this course and how challenging some of the holes are. However, the course is not in very good condition! I read some reviews that said 'sand pits are awful' and wish I would have avoided them completely but didn't. They were like concrete, definitly needs alot more sand!!! Fairways were fairly 'patchy' with bare spots! Rough was uncut and high! Water (ponds?) were mud holes. However, greens were in pretty good shape.... best part of the course! Would I play here again... only with the rate I got!!! Any higher & I'd look elsewhere.
Beautiful location
The management need a Marshall to enforce the flow of the game especially on weekends. Very sluggish at best. Too many players don't have any idea of golf etiquette. 2 to 3 mulligans per hole!!!! Some spend 10 to 15 minutes searching for lost ball. My group took almost 6 hours to complete our round. The staff however were very nice and courteous.
One of the few good deals left on Golfnow.com
Course is challenging because of the narrow fairways on the back nine, slanted fairways, and the up and down hills. Course management is key for shooting low rounds. Greens are great!
Fun course most greens ok a few in poor condition.
I was in a lot of bunkers. Course is well laid out and staff are very friendly. They need to fix a couple of greens that are in poor shape. Greens are hard to read. All putts go towards the highway.
Understaffed
Played this course off and on for over 30 years, and was dissapointed in the overall feel at this time. Condition of course was fair at best, locker room bathrooms had tissue on floor and trash can overflowing. Food at the turn was horrible. People were generally freindly. Not what you would expect from a resort. Only paid 28.00 per person, but they must be understaffed
hot day
trying to fill out the rating scale is difficult. YOu should have a "button" selection process and the scale should have 5 choices.
Great value
This is a great course for the price. There are a few questionable hole designs, but that's offset by the $25 midweek price. They clean your clubs for you at the end of the round, so if you're not a tipper, ask them not to before walking onto the 18th green. I actually liked that perk. There's also a bit of work being done currently.
Great layout
There is no driving range but they do have nets you can hit into to loosen up and their short game practice area is decent. The course layout gives you a lot of options. I don't know if it was the time of year or what but for a Troon course I was surprised at the shape of the fairways and bunkers, they needed work. You can see though that this course has a lot of potential. Staff was friendly. Overall, I'd rate it slightly better than a municipal course because of the shape it was in.. Good deal for the price.
Old Penasqiutos golf course
The course is easy to walk but there are slopes and side hill lies. Several holes are side by side. Look out for errant shots. The bunkers were in very poor condition, The green were very slow .
Nice layout, great rates, needs just a bit more work...
Played on a Thursday morning around 845-9. Showed up late due to traffic and the staff was friendly and accommodated me without issue. Got paired up with another gent and we were off. The course was fun and challenging on the tighter longer holes, but the greens were inconsistent and tough to get any sort of true roll. Yes they had been recently punched, no I was not alerted to this, but nevertheless some areas of the greens were true and that made up for some of the bad greens. Tee boxes needed a bit of work but other than that the round was great.
Challenging but fair course
I always enjoy this course. Carmel Highland Resort and Spa (formerly Doubletree) has ups and downs, and contours on many holes that require good ball control to be successful. The risk/reward is significant on many holes. Most of the fairways are narrow enough to be challenging, but if you keep the ball in the fairway, you have a great chance for success. A good round on this course is a good round earned!
Excellent staff and challenging course.
The staff was very attentive from the onset and warm and welcoming throughout. The course was challenging and played well though I did manage to blow a few par opportunities. It was a beautiful day to play and the atmosphere was outstanding.
In need of care
The course was being aerated which we did not know. Several holes were under repair and in bad shape.
No marshals around to monitor pace of play which was slow.
Always pleased to play this course.
Good course, like the continued repair and care being done to enhance the look of the course.
good value for what was charged
Tough time to review a course because it is maintenance time and there was top dressing everywhere. I play a lot of Troon courses in Arizona and this one was not up to their standards. The course has great potential and is very challenging length wise. They don't have a full driving range and the practice area was in rough shape, but again largely because of the top dressing.
Eye appeal
Golfed with my wife and son. We had a great afternoon together. There was some work being done on the course but overall we were pleased and would go back.
Good Beer, not so good of a course
This NOT a course I would not recommend to anyone visiting San Diego for some good golf. The fairways were pretty torn up and the greens were dried out and furry. No driving range and a pretty cramped practice area.
The Beer Cart is always present and you cant beat the prices.
If you can get a good deal on tee times, this is a decent track to get out and hit some practice shots. Don't expect a challenge and watch out for the weekend Hackers hitting bombs from the next fairway over.
enjoyed the course
enjoyed the course very much. it's in good shape. greens were great but fairways need attention, but overall in fine shape. great deals to be had if you look. could use a better practice facility
Great course
Confusing hole arrangement but overall friendly staff.
