Heron Bay
I have been playing at Heron Bay for the last 8 years. The course has been through several owners. The current group has really let the course conditions slide.
The greens, including the practice green, need to be improved. There are bald spots, weeds everywhere.
Very disappointed that the course has been allowed to fall into this condition. The word must have gotten out because the course was not busy at all. Very unusual for a course in South Florida to be this quiet on a Sunday.
A shell of its former self
We played Heron Bay three years ago and it was in pristine condition. This time...not even close. The greens were sanded, had weeds on them, and they didn't hold one single wedge. The traps weren't raked there was trash in the water and in between the tee boxes, it was pathetic. Do yourself a favor and play Plantation Preserve or the Diplomat.
Heron bay
Course was in good over all shape. Pace of play was very good. Booked on golf now well worth the money.
Sand
Lots of sand! Great layout, water does not come into play. Greens could use some TLC.
Good Bones
Played as a 3-some in a 3-club wind in high season in 3 hours and 45 minutes. Look -- how much you like this course is going to depend on your expectations. Despite it's history, this isn't anything close to the standards of a current tour course, or a TPC course. That said, it's a good golf course and a solid layout. Lateral water on just about every hole, but no forced carries. The big challenge is sand, which is everywhere, and somewhat inconsistent in texture from hole to hole -- it was gravelly on the front and thick and soft on the back. Greens were fast, true and holding well. Fairways are generous. Amenities are decent -- the clubhouse, bag drop and club pickup are all a little scraggly, but pro shop is nice and beverage cart hit us 4 times. Bottom line: this is a value between $50-$75, which is what we paid on a GolfNow review.
Barely playable, slow groups, Lots of sand traps without much sand in them.
Too many other courses around to waste 4:45-5:00 playing a course in bad condition. This could be a really nice course but it is quickly becoming a goat ranch. Must be in financial trouble to be this bad. Only people playing here seemed to be tourists suckered into the "Site of the Honda Classic" dribble.
Fairways - sparse
Bunkers - not very consistent, Some had rocks (green side)
Greens - Horrible, weeds on greens. Not everywhere but enough to matter. Did not look like they were even mowed recently. Some quick, some slow, some average. Very inconsistent.
The kicker was that we had a 3some go off in front of our 4some. 3 holes in we caught up to them. There was one coach giving lessons to an older lady. In the fairway, on the greens, all the while we were waiting to hit. On the 6th hole we called the pro-shop. A ranger drove by them and right past us a short time later. He did not even acknowledge us. We finally just went up to them on the next tee box and they informed us they were in a group of High school team members. The 4some in front of them had 5 players in it. This was a SUNDAY! lessons are fine but not on what is touted as the "Previous Site of the Honda Classic" which is on every brochure and every advertisement they have. Would not go back for any reason. Marriott Hotel is adjacent to course. It was marginal also. This looks to be a former nice course that is in bad decline. They will only hasten their demise by letting it get this bad and making customers deal with lessons being given on the course.
Can't recommend
they have a 5,000 dollar hole in one challenge for 5 bucks. It doesn't matter whether you sign up for it or not, when you get to the tee there will be 3 groups waiting. It slowed down the round by at least 30 minutes. THE ROUND TOOK OVER 5 hours. For this reason alone I would never play the course again. The course it self is not in good condition. It also has a ton of sand traps, which is fine but the course tough for beginners. No GPS.
Try Jacaranda instead
Too many bunkers. Visual lines difficult for someone unfamiliar with course. Greens crusty and bumpy. Great greens could have made a difference.
Not for beginners
Very dissointed by the ground staff. They just continued using their hand mowing/cutting machines while we approached the green and during putting. No consideration for the players.
Moreover the course has many huge sand traps, but very few rakes, in some cases no rakes at all. In cases when there were rakes, they were all within a couple of yards of each other so often I wa required to walk all the way around the huge trap to get a rake before taking my shot.
Also thought the course, given its high rating was quite dirty - much trash around and in the bushes and along the waters edge.
Management is untruthfull
Tee time was 12:51. Teed off 1:40. Was sold a $5.00 hole in one card that you swipe at the machine at the hole. You win $5.000.00 if you hole out. Machine had blank screen and we couldn't get it to boot up. Talked to a member of the staff and was told it never seems to work. More bunkers and traps then you will ever see on any course anywhere. The amount of sand in them is sparse making green side traps very tough.
Get ready for a lesson in how to golf in wind!
I was looking this course layout on my gps app the night before and truthfully thought it wouldn't be that challenging. When I arrived an hour early to hit the range and practice green I was welcomed with what felt like 20-30 mph wind. This added a minimum of 5 strokes to my round. Other than that the course property was pretty spectacular. The pratice area could of been the best I've seen. However, we were started on the back 9 and this alone was rough because the back 9 seemed a lot harder. The 10th green was in rough shape and was nothing what I expected. Thankfully there were only 2 other greens like that one. T boxes were the flattest I've seen. Cart girl (which I can care less about) was very good and showed up 4 timed for the 2 some I played with. All in all I don't feel that this course was anything special. If they had Jacaranda or Inverarry style greens I would have been much more impressed. I'm not sure if I'd play again mostly due to location but I'd recommend for golfers to at least try once.
weather good, staff no so much
Flew in my company executives for a golf- business meeting combo. Coming from the cold temps of ATL and Iowa we were all as excited as kids at Christmas to play.
Upon arrival there was confusion about how/where to get a cart. Then when we checked in and handed voucher to guy at counter he looked confused and less than excited to check us in.
We wanted to hit range balls but were given this painful spiel from the cart boy (while smacking his sandwich) at how we had to pay 12 bucks cash at the vending machine, because machine didn't like vouchers. Range was a long way away and there were no carts, even though our tee time was in 15 minutes. Really?! I said I guess we'll walk and he didn't even offer to give us a ride.
Course was okay, weather was amazing, but will not go back due to underwhelming performance of entire staff (expect the guy in restaurant, he actually acted like he cared).
Staff was horrinle
The golf staff was the worst they did t have a cart to give us when we arrived had to wait to go to the range then the ball dispenser didn't work and the starter should be fired or quit because he hates his job finally got balls warmed up and then our tee time was up and the starter was. nowhere to be found so we just went out, course was fine same as usual lots of bunkers we like the course but the golf staff no good.
Too Many Other Good Courses Around
Other than the strategic bunkering, the course does not have much character. Flat with not much vegitaton. GPS on carts in critical to know the carry on the bunkers. Don't waste time trying to locate rakes in bunkers. We think they took them off the course as a pace of play thing. If raking, rounds would take 5 hrs. We just pulled balls from footprints, etc no big deal. Greens are pretty good, but very firm and non-receptive. If you get a good deal on green fees, this is not a bad track...but not recommended or a "must play". Play Jacaranda, Deer Creek, or Osprey Point.
Every hole is the same
First hole, two huge gravel sand pits (some play these as waste bunkers, given that few were raked. an honest mistake given the sand/gravel mix) with a 10 yard landing area between them 190-230 yards out, next shot to a green with two huge silt sand (totally different sand than the fairways pits) greens beside it. Repeat 17 more times, varying the length of the hole. It's like groundhog day on this course. Beautiful water all around this course is never in play. Fairways were in just passable shape, greens were shaved almost bare. I shot my handicap, so no sour grapes here. if you can play sand and gravel pits this is not a hard course, and if you like length there are tees over 7000 yards, but the numbing sameness means I will never return. Such a disappointment. Give this place a pass.
Heron Bay
Nice fairly open course, no fear of errant shots hitting homes, can spray it and get away with it. Excellent food, nice practice facility
OK round
Overall everthing was "average". Nothing to complain about. However, nothing noteworthy either. Course is wide open. However, there are lot's of bunkers. Clearly, the course is operating with a limited budget as evidenced by staff and conditioning. However, for the price, it is a reasonavble value.
Too many sand traps
Course had too many sand traps. Impossible not to land in some of the traps. Greens in good condition.
great course, always a challenge
great setup,a lot of fairway bunkers, not much water
