Golf Club At Terra Lago - South Course
About
Formerly known as Landmark Golf Club, the Golf Club at Terra Lago was the host of the PGA Tour Skins Game from 1999 to 2002. The club's impressive guest list includes Greg Norman, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods. There are two 18-hole courses available called the North and the South. At 7,044 yards, Terra Lago's South Course is just barely shorter than the 7,060-yard North Course but they are equally challenging. The South is known for having one of the club's most unique and memorable holes, the par-4 second. This narrow hole runs alongside a wide canal that makes anything hit to the right impossible to play. The unique part of the hole comes as you approach the green. To cross the creek, rather than having a traditional wood bridge, the course designer crafted a bridge from an old rail car, which explains its nickname as the "Boxcar" hole.

Fourth hole on the South Course Photo submitted by William4478124 on 02/22/2014
Played this course as part of a marathon 9-rounds in 5 days trip I took to the Coachella Valley. Played both the North and South course on the same day.
The South course is an enjoyable round with plenty of interesting holes. However it does lack some of the aesthetic beauty, overall challenge, and quality of conditions that its North counterpart has.
CONDITIONS: You do not get that same quality of condition on the South that you do on the North. Bunkers are an afterthought, at best, here. Dusty sand, and in areas just rock hard and unplayable. There were sparse areas of the fairway. The greens rolled more consistent than the North the day I played. I found it interesting how 2 courses on the same property could be conditioned so differently.
VALUE: Given the conditions, I feel like the deal times you can find online are the closest thing to fair value for this course.
LAYOUT: Much like the North, the South sits in the desert with minimal housing surrounding the course. There are spots where you get vistas sort of like you do on the North (#4 and #5), but they are nowhere as dramatic. The South does play around the canal that runs through the course (#2, #6, #8, #9, some on the back). I found holes #13 thru #17 to be a fun stretch of holes that helped steady my scorecard for this round.
FRIENDLINESS: The staff were awesome. Helpful and accommodating everywhere I went.
PACE: Tee’d off around Noon, and the pace never picked up. Played the expected/anticipated 4.5 hour round.
DIFFICULTY: The South is not as difficult as the North, but I did lose more balls on the South (that canal got me!). The South is more forgiving than the North and allows you to score well without being in the perfect position.
Really good course
Course is in good condition but a 5 hour round with no sign of a Marshall to speed things up put a damper on what could have been a memorable golf experience. Every hole after the fifth we had at least two groups waiting.
Playing there was a cluster
A fiend and I were from out of town and decided to play golf on the South course. Price was very good for this season and area. From the time we got there to there time we left it was a total cluster you know what. Dropped our bags at the bag drop and went inside to pay and were told our bags would arrive downstairs. We paid and went downstairs and no bags. We walked around and up to the parking lot and the guy said he would load the bags so we turned round and went back down to the carts. We paid for 2 buckets of balls. Then the guys tells us we can’t have a cart because they don’t have enough (there were problem 26 carts sitting there ready to go). We said no problem - will just go to the driving range since we were over 1/2 hour early. Then the guy says the driving range is quite far away and not recommended we walk but he would give us a ride. Then he disappeared for 10 minutes and told us go ahead and use a cart. So we loaded up a cart and ready to head to the driving range and there wasn’t a key in the cart so we couldn’t go. Couldn’t find the guy for another 6 or 7 minutes and finally went inside and saw him and he gave us the key. Then drive all of the way to the driving range and someone told us we were supposed to get our balls back at the clubhouse. There were about 4 other carts dealing with the same thing. Finally another guy drives up and gives us empty baskets and tells us we can go get balls out of a large trash can at the end of the driving range - so we dis that bit then it was time for our t time. Of course, no signs to tell us where the south course t box was located but we asked someone and found it right away. The pace of play was slow - we waited at every t box and people behind us hitting into us all day. One one of the back 9 holes the sprinklers came on full blast and we literally couldn’t play that hole because the sprinklers were blasting on the e tire fairway. No beverage cart girl so we shared a single bottle of water and no shacks or clubhouse along the was to get drinks or food. Greens were in really good shape and that’s about all that was in good shape. Could t wait to be done after a 5+ hour round
Pro Shop Staff Rude
The staff inside the Pro Shop was extremely rude. The bar staff, the cart staff and the starter were very nice.
Pleasantly surprised
Have been reading about all of the negativity lately. Played today and found fairways to be perfect and the green were very good to great. Traps could use some sand and sure, there are bare spots in parts of the rough but the price is reflective of this. The layout is outstanding. Looks like the new owners are trying to bring it back to what it was in the past. I highly recommend playing the South course. Played in 4 hours. Enjoy this course for its raw beauty and if you want to score well….. hit it straight.
Terrible! Stay away!
The rudest employees ever! Guy helping at carts was sarcastic and started picked a fight and argued with us!! Even said “Are you giving me the stink eye?” I mean… awful. Then course is in horrible condition! No sand in bunkers, weeds and rocks in them instead. Only good thing about the day were our two nice playing partners who lived in the community. We left after 9 holes.
Bunkers
Definitely need to put sand in sand traps they are rock traps now. Slow pace of play .
Pace of play was excellent. May have been a gap in the tee sheet so we started a few minutes early and had no one close behind.
Greens were reasonable speed and in very good condition. The fairways in places were a little rough with areas burned out to no grass at all. We did play winter rules if we hit a bald spot. Despite that, completely playable and we enjoyed the day.
Terra Lago South
We got lost getting there due to lack of signage both getting there plus on the course. It was very easy to go the wrong way on course and have to double back. Playing on the course was also confusing. The cart paths were very had to find and you only knew you were going into restricted areas when the cart started beeping. Drainage from prior storms have eroded quite a bit of dirt and traps. We had to make judgement calls as to ground under repair far too many times. Landing areas were confusing and scattered making it difficult to judge where to go.
Terra Lago South after 1200 p.m.
The pace of play was horrible. Too many groups out on the course at one time. Having to return the cart by 5 pm made it even worse. If they let the carts stay out at least sunset we may have gotten more holes in. Maybe have a marshal monitor the afternoon sessions and push slower groups. I understand that the price of golf is outrageous to play earlier at almost every course, but $60 per person to only complete 12 holes because of slow play and returning the cart early is also outrageous. I may give it another go, but we’ shall see.
they lost my rez , but were able to sqeeze me in , 30 mph wind constant unfortunatey. south coarse had poor signage to get to back 10 got lost. al in all it went as well as could be exoected.
So much potential
You could see why course hosted a number of skins games. Great layout yet minimal maintenance. Too bad really. I wouldn’t think it would take much to bring it up on par with other great courses in the valley.
