Good shot placement helps.
Course is fun, must hit smart shots into some challenging holes. Good course for your money.
Rough condition
Course has taken a beating over the years. I realize the economy is having some trouble but the condition of the course used to be one of the best in SD county, but not any more.
OK course, but....
Play was slow, need a cart for this course as green to the next hole was a long ways apart. Sand traps need work. Greens were very fast and rolled true. Tee boxes on the rough side. Lots of blind tee shots.
Wonderful
This course is well kept. Always in great shape very challenging.
Great golf exspierence.
Can't wait to go back and play.the staff make you feel so welcome.
Poor condition
Staff great, course is in poor conditions and practice area unique
Nice layout.
Nice layout but a bit unusual with long distances between holes. Take a cart. Don't try to walk it.
Friendly, helpful staff and well-maintained course
My wife and I played mid-week for a reasonable green fee with GPS cart and the staff at the Pro Shop give us a great rate on high quality (Nike VR) club rentals. The course wasn't busy which we greatly appreciated since my wife is a beginner and this was her first 18 holes (she had golfed 9 holes about 4 times previously). The houses that line the fairways generally have enough trees on the border for a better feeling. Good greens, and only a few drier areas on some fairways.
The course has good layout and is challenging.
I was surprised that the course wasn't in better shape. It is usually pristine, but the greens had not been mowed and were very slow. It was Sunday, yet maintenance was watering fairways in front of us causing muddy and wet "lies". This made it harder to get some good hits on the ball. It was also Memorial Day weekend and the course was unusually empty. It made our round faster, but it made us wonder if the course was going downhill? I don't get to play the course much because the green fees are usually pretty high. I hope things change for the better because it is a great course and I would hate to see it get worse than it was last week.
uphill battle
this was a challenging course a bit of an uphill battle. I liked it and will play it again sometime.I would hope that the Marshall's are a little more observant and watch for groups that are not following "ANY" pace of play etiquette .Looking for lost balls for five minutes etc etc.take an extra club for most approach shots They seems to play longer than it looks up the hills but a fun time.but 4,3/4 hrs on a weekday morning seems to long.
this course needs a Makeover
The greens were slow and sponge, and the sand traps had very lllittle sand.
Fun to play
Course in good condition, good price, new driving range is pretty cool, only saw the cart lady once on the seconds hole at aprox. 2:15 and it was her last round???? on a sunday???? that was kinda a buzz kill. Overall great and fun course.
Nice course for the price
Overall a pretty decent course, the pace of play can be really slow and the course can be backed up and crouded. My biggest issue with the course is that most of the holes don't have a great fairway to play off of, even with a great shot you are usually playing on a hill, not very many flat spots to hit from.
Bad layout, no drivng range, bad service
Layout is so-so, don't like to play the course where you have hard time finding decent flat area on the tee box.
Greens were spongy, slow and unpredictable, you couldn't figure out the speed on the greens. They were so slow that the ball would stop in the midd of a downhill lie.
There used to be just "no driving range area", so they put a batting cage to warm up, which was OK. Now they started chargin even for a batting cage, because they put some stupid "virtual machines" there, and now you have to pay even to warm up. Watching yourself on a monitor and trying to adjust your swing right before you go an play is the worst idea, because it completely messes up your game. Pre-game warm up is not your chance to correct your faults in the game, but an opportunity to losen up. On this course you don't even have that opportunity now.
And to top it off, every time I play here, it takes 5-6 hours to play thru the course, especially on the weekend. The pace is absurd.
Overall, I think I'm done with this course, I give it another chance every 6 months or so, hoping that it'll get better, but it really doesn't.
Slow Greens
Greens in great shape, but seem to be rolling slower than normal. Pace of play excellent on a Sunday afternoon.
Amazing golf course!
It's a beutiful place! The course has some ups and downs, which made us difficult to play, but I think for expericend player it would be joyful challenges. The course are beutiful and well-kept.
you will walk alot
I never knew a course could have almost very hole going uphill. Most holes had four or more bunkers fronting the greens. 7 or 8 holes were cart path only. Several of the holes you had to park the cart about 40 or 50 yds from the green.
I recommend this course only because you may like a challenging course. Our tastes are all different.
Overall the course is on an uptrend awesome job!
This course was once very poorly maintained, and with really unfriendly staff.
they are trying to restore this course to its glory days, the fairways are in a lot better shape than a year ago. and the greens are usually pretty good shape.
It is a really challenging course, and a really great value for money especially twilight.
Greens
When I booked the time I asked specifically when their spring aeration was done and was told it was 3 weeks prior and the greens were in great shape now. They were putting down another layer of sand IMMEDIATELY in front of us that day! I was very disappointed!
This course has all the features you need from a golf course.
If you need a moderate to challenging golf course, you want to play Carmel Mountain Ranch GC. It has the features you want to have and play in a golf course. Nice green and fairways, and still in progress of upgrading. Each hole has it's own feature. No two holes similar. Good drives on two par 5s offer you reachable green in two. You play once and you would want to go back again..and again.
