Sand Canyon Country Club
About
The Valley is one of two 18-hole golf courses at Robinson Ranch. As the name would imply, the course is tucked into the Santa Clarita Valley next to the Los Angeles National Forest. California Sycamores, coastal live oaks, and stands of sage and chaparral blanket both golf courses. Scenic waterfalls further enhance the beautiful landscape and they also come into play throughout, most notably on the Valley's finishing hole. The Valley is the original layout at Robinson Ranch. It is not as hilly and plays more like a championship golf course than the shorter Mountain Course. Several elevated tees are incorporated into the design to take advantage of the stunning mountains views. The traditional layout combines both desert-style holes with holes that more tree lined. It offers an interesting variety of challenged including doglegs, sand traps strategically placed along the landing zones, and well protected, multi-tiered greens.

Valley course quite straightforward, fast greens and fairways
Got on as a single with a number of empty T times in front of me on a hot Sunday morning. V friendly staff, got through 13 holes before I saw another player, I love to play fast. Some interesting doglegs, blind holes and fairways were very fast so a low fade is likely to go off the fairway and often did. Greens in good shape, but quite fast and hard to get speed down.
I really enjoyed the round while kids were at Magic Mountain.
Another great SoCal challenge!
EXPERIENCE
This golf course is beautiful with rolling hills and natural design built with the terrain. The architect took advantage of the natural setting with many elevation changes, rolling fairways and approaches to well guarded greens. Every hole was unique it it's own challenge with something different at every turn.
Giant trees in the middle of two fairways was the only real twist. You got to get it out there to get a good look ahead. This requires a grip it and rip it mentality because conservatism gets you a bogie or worse. Its a design for the mind
FAIRWAYS
The fairways were good condition given the desert surrounding and the heat. They just had a tiny bit of winter blues but still great to play from. The fairways roll a lot and tighten up al lot and require position a lot. .
GREENS
Lots of undulation but negotiable.. They were smooth and true but not stupid fast but fast enough to follow the line. Nice to say the least
TEES
The tees need work. Grass too long and bumps under your feet. They need a good rolling and a bit more trimming
PRACTICE FACILITIES
Good
CLUBHOUSE
Looks beautiful but I didn't see much of it.
Mountain course
Tight course with many blind spots, make sure to bring extra balls. Very hot and no cart girl in sight the whole round, make sure to bring plenty of water to avoid a heat stroke. Overall descent course with fast greens in moderate conditions, groomed fairways and great views of mountains.
Great Course to Play While Visiting the LA Area
We visit the LA area often and are always looking for good courses to play. Robinson Ranch has 2 18 hole courses - we played the Valley course and thought it was well maintained and challenging. The staff was great! We will definitely be back.
Challenging secluded layout
The Valley Course at Robinson Ranch features several truly memorable holes and a challenging stretch on the back 9 that will truly test your game.
We teed off at 3pm on a Sunday and didn't see a soul (aside from about half a dozen deer). The clubhouse staff is a bit uptight ($50 rider fee? c'mon) but the cart guys are good and they have a great clubhouse atmosphere. Range balls are free if you're playing, which is a great touch.
You need the practice because the Valley course plays long and you can't just bomb it around the way you can on the more forgiving sister course, Mountain. Most holes provide a risk-reward decision off the tee and several options around the green. There are birdie opportunities on the front 9, particularly on 1, 4, and 8.
The par 5 9th hole is probably my favorite hole on either course. You ascend to an elevated tee from which you can see 20 miles in every direction. There is a large tree right in the middle of the fairway about 250 yards away. A big hitter can fly it right over and have a long iron or fairway wood into a well protected green. An average hitter like myself has to choose: play right where it's wider or play left for a shot with a 3 wood into an elevated green with water left and bunker right.
After 12 holes you may be feeling pretty good about yourself. But as you're driving over to the 13th hole, you'll encounter a sign that reads: "Welcome to Death Valley".
Yep. About to get real.
13 is ridiculous, 600 yards. 14 is a silly par 3, 250 yards with a mini-golf green. 15 tee is the high point on the course so that tee shot can go anywhere. You must lay up off 16 tee leading to a middle iron 2nd shot to a ridiculously protected green with water and trouble everywhere.
Just hang in there. 18 is a great reachable par 5. You have a bail out left if you go for the green. It's a heck of a finishing hole.
I thought the course was in good condition considering it was 100 degrees and the heart of summer when we played it. The greens were pretty smooth and plenty fast enough. Bunkers were nice.
It's a course that will test you so if you're not in good form, stick with the Mountain course. I prefer Valley not only because I'm a golf masochist but because the course sticks with you. It has the elevated tees, unique holes, it plays fair but tough, and some true risk-reward par 5s.
Good luck out there.
Beautiful
Fast, manicured greens and challenging. I play this course often and highly recommend.
A-ONE-- all around!!
Great course, Staff are very professional. Which makes a sure bet of a return play in the near future. Thanks
good deal
This is a great course and well maintained. It is not for the faint of heart, but still a lot of fun. Staff at Robinson's Ranch are absolutely the most professional of most any golf course I have been.
Mountain course
Slow play on a Sunday but it was a lot of fun. Lost quite a few ProV1's out there. Don't play expensive balls. Lots of tough OB. Beautiful views. Wind plays a factor. Watch for Rattler snakes! Can't wait to play it again.
This is really closer to country club golf!
This is a very challenging, wonderful golf course. It offers altitude differences, water play, barranca's and more. It throws real fear at you when you enter part of the back nine known as "death row". When the course lulls you into a long drive, likely trouble left and right, lots of natural hazards. Yet it's beautiful and affordable if you watch for deals. A little hot during the peak of summer but plays like a country club in the desert. Nice staff, and great food at the restaurant afterward.
I'll be back, the challenge is keeping it straight but if you do there are many birdie opportunities!!!
Course is a great getaway
The course was great the greens were just super fast.
One of my favorites
I play all over socal and have not played Robinson's ranch for quite awhile. I have never been a fan of dormant grass so the last time i played there that is what we got however this time things were much different, The course is beautiful, lush, challenging yet fair, and the whole experience was near perfect. This is now one of my favorite tracks in scal and we will be returning soon.
Nice Layout
Interesting and challenging layout, beautiful views of the surrounding mountains throughout. Somewhat unforgiving - a stray tee shot stands a good chance at being unretrievable.
Unlike the typical resort course.
Plays hard and fast, fairways and greens. Speed and line are critical when putting. Played the Valley Course which is considered the more difficult of the two. Less than driver is better off most tees. Very challenging course but fun to play.
Very Challenging
The valley course is very challenging. If you can not drive the ball consistently where you want, you will be in deep trouble. The fairway areas between 250-300 yards are very narrow on certain holes and even when you feel you have hit a good shot, you can be ob or required to punch out. Best bet- if you don't know the course well do not expect to score well. If you do know the course, you know what you are in for. Great place to test your game.
Must Play
Both courses are fun and challenging. Great way to spend the day with a round in the morning, a great lunch in the grill(the Robinson Ranch Burger is awesome!!) and then an afternoon round. Great courses and great views. The bunkers need some attention because there isn't enough sand to cover the netting and it can catch your club. Other than that the courses are in great shape.
Great Value for such a nice course
Great course with solid prices and amazing views!! Would totally recommend this course to all levels of golfers!
very challenging!
2nd time i've played this course and it was just as good as the 1st. this is a golfers paradise!
Mountain Course: Harder than appears
I played Robinson Ranch Valley Course last weekend and had so much fun I decided to make the 45 minute drive back up to give the Mountain Course a try. In comparing the two courses, I beg to say that perhaps the Mountain is more difficult than the Valley despite the higher slope rating for the Valley (Mountain 72.3/137 and Valley 74.4/149). Yes, I was a little off today and the putts weren't dropping but all that aside, the terrain of the Mountain course proved to be more difficult.
Elevated tee boxes made drives fun and tempting but there is a premium on course management on the Mountain Course. I found myself trying to layup more often and calculating my next shots more frequently than normal. This course can be a bit frustrating because of the undulation and tight fairways. I can remember a handful of drives that were hit very solid, heading towards the center of the fairway and when I drove up to where I expected my ball to be, it was nowhere to be found. Needless to say I took penalty strokes for near perfect drives for balls that should have been easy to find.
The elevation changes are overall probably more dramatic on the Mountain Course but the gem remains to be the Valley Course. The Mountain was not quite as well maintained but was still in great condition. Bring some extra balls for both courses and look for the deals here on Golfnow and you'll have a great time. Both courses are enjoyable and are in great condition, especially for a public course... It really felt like a private club. Again, the views are spectacular and the water features are a great addition to this hidden gem.
