Sand Canyon Country Club
About
The Valley is one of two 18-hole golf courses at Robinson Ranch. As the name would imply, the course is tucked into the Santa Clarita Valley next to the Los Angeles National Forest. California Sycamores, coastal live oaks, and stands of sage and chaparral blanket both golf courses. Scenic waterfalls further enhance the beautiful landscape and they also come into play throughout, most notably on the Valley's finishing hole. The Valley is the original layout at Robinson Ranch. It is not as hilly and plays more like a championship golf course than the shorter Mountain Course. Several elevated tees are incorporated into the design to take advantage of the stunning mountains views. The traditional layout combines both desert-style holes with holes that more tree lined. It offers an interesting variety of challenged including doglegs, sand traps strategically placed along the landing zones, and well protected, multi-tiered greens.

Robinson Ranch Valley Par 5 18th Photo submitted by hacksalot03 on 12/29/2012
Well maintained from the tee boxes to the greens. Fantastic Views.
OVERALL: Well maintained from the tee boxes to the greens. Fantastic views. A fun and challenging course for all levels. Great pace w/ great spacing between groups. Round takes about 4.5 to 5 hours w/ a foursome. Their slogan, "It's not a country club, but it plays like one" holds true.
GREENS: For the most part, very well taken care of. Holes around water tend to have more unfixed divots (3, 4, 6, 18) later in the day. But that's more of a reflection on players as opposed to the maintenance. Moderate undulations. They have 3 sets of pin placements, be sure to ask prior to going out.
TEE BOX: 4 sets of tee boxes (Red, White, Blue, Black). Well maintained, flat, w/ ample places to tee up. Each have concrete distance markers which is nice.
FAIRWAY: Rolling fairways w/ multiple elevation changes. Evenly cut, consistent, and soft. On the fairway, the condition of the ground has never been an issue. However, if your not careful, you can end up hitting your second shot off an incline/decline. Concrete distance markers w/ wood steaks for easy spotting (100, 150, 200).
ROUGH: Maintained, w/ out debris (leaves/sticks/rocks). However, some areas can be patchy/clumpy, only a few spots overgrown and long, and some dirt patches near the edges.
SAND-TRAPS: Well placed, and well maintained. Generally shallow in depth. I've only come across 1 w/ hard sand (18th, first bunker on the right. Blind from the tee box)
O/B: Clear separation between rough and O/B's. Very easy to loose balls, the bushes seem to gobble them up. Also very easy to find other peoples lost balls when looking for yours. If you spray, 1 dozen may not be enough.
GOLF CARTS: Not the newest, not the oldest. Comfy enough to not notice them being uncomfortable. Each is equipped w/
a cooler that fits a six pack, and a ball/club cleaner. They are also stocked w/ a few free tees
((( Course review is for MOUNTAIN COURSE, based on playing it twice (03/02/13 & 03/09/13) w/ 1:00pm tee time.)))
-- OTHER FEATURES --
OTHER: They load up your bag on the cart for you. You get a free small bucket of balls to warm up w/ at the range. They provide free ice for the attached cooler on the cart. They drive you out the first tee, set you up w/ a score-card, pencil, free tees, free ball marker, free divot tool, and a wet or dry towel needed. During the round I typically see a Snack Cart Girl once or twice. When finished, sometimes they offer to clean your clubs for you (to earn a bigger tip)
SNACKBAR:
Good BLT, good hotdog, delicious home made chips. Beer is around the normal ($5-ish). Easy pop-in pop-out when going from the 9th to 10th.
DRIVING RANGE: 30-ish mats, w/ approx 8 shaded. They could use some new mats. Driving range is elevated. Not a great place to learn your club distances. They give you a free small bucket of balls prior to every round.
PRACTICE GREEN: Approx 12 holes wrapped around a "donut" shape planter. Can get a crowded feeling. Personally feel the practice green isn't representative of the course greens.
Excellent except for aireated greens
Golf Now offered some excellent discounts, however, according to the course's own website, they were still charging full rates even though the greens were being aireated. No mention of that fact given in advance.
challenging course without wind
not informed that greens were punched and sanded when checked in. would not have picked course if known at booking. one of the most windy days of the year makes a tough course tougher. played this course many times in the past, mostly tournaments, and not a friendly course for short hitters. beautiful view from many elevated tees. cart service was frequent. had to call marshall and he took care of problem in front of us professionally and was glad we notified him of the problem.
Great course, good conditions for time of year
The course was in good condition for mid-February. There was one or two fairways that had ground under repair. The Mountain Course is difficult and you must drive the ball straight to have any chance of making birdies. Pace of play was slow, but we played on a holiday so all things consider it was ok. Staff was nice but the guy who took our bags to our carts dropped my buddies clubs out of his bag. Overall it was a nice day.
Nice course for the price
The course is in an ok condition. Not a very easy layout but fun, the greens are fast and challenging.. So if you can keep your ball straight and put it somewhat close to where you aim, you'll enjoy this course..
All around great experience
Robinson Ranch is all you can ask for from a public golf course. From including range balls to warm up with to the well-kept fairways and greens, there's nothing not to like about this course. Played the Valley course for the first time and found it a combination of fair and challenging. I recommend Robinson Ranch to anyone and will find myself there again soon.
Very challenging course, but tons of fun
Enjoyed getting a discount, but still not worth the discount price. Very challenging course which made it fun and leveled out the playing field for our group, but course conditions were sub par. Course was extremely narrow, but on top of that anything outside the fairway was very poor grass
One of my favorite courses!
We drove up from LA and thought we were going to have an eighty degree, beautiful day, but when we got there the wind was blowing 30+ mph which made it more of a challenge. I've played Robinson Ranch many times but never in those conditions. We made the best of it and still had a great time. We will definitely come back!
Unusually slow (so I heard) but incredible value.
This was the first time I had played this course and they only had the Mountain open that day which is probably the reason the pace was so slow. That said, the service was great from the time I arrived to the time I left and the course was spectacular. Being that I got a great deal online during the week it was a great value. Like their add says it really did have a private course feel. I'll be back.
Great place to test your accuracy
This is a great course. The greens are always on the firm and fast side. This course will test you, so bring a determined attitude and your A game. Great place for tournaments. Friendly staff and great amenities.
Great course(s)
Both courses at Robinson Ranch are great. They're always in excellent shape, the greens are fast, but hold good shots, and the pace of play is actually good. In fact, This is the only course in the LA Area that seems to be able to keep the pace to a normal rate (4 1/2 hours or less) - even when the tee sheet is full. Well worth the drive from wherever you are.
Picturesque, well maintained and enjoyable course and a very good deal (with GolfNow discount)
Second time at RR and first time playing Valley. Very little wind which I hear is unusual and perfect weather made the course very playable and shorter than the yardage would indicate. Couldn't putt to save my life but the green rolled true, held wedges as they should, but were very subtle and a little local knowledge would've gone a long way. Went on a Tuesday morning so beware, driving range AND putting green closed - I have no idea why and probably aided in missing so many putts. Beautiful scenery, and were paired with a couple good guys so overall, great value, fun golf, and feels like it is a lot further away from LA than the drive would indicate... Just know your yardages, and hit the straightest club in the bag because tight is an understatement on many holes..
Great course and has 2, 18 hole courses
I play Robinson Ranch a lot and it is a great golf course. Excellent staff and the course is in great shape.
Great views and nice condition
Nice drive out to a really pleasant course. Challenging but fair if you pick the right tees for your game. Specular tee set ups on some holes hitting down into the valley. Make sure you bring your gps as the holes are not marked for distance and there are some hazards hard to see from ground. There are no course map on the scorecards. Match sure you pick the right lines or you will be blocked out from trees in the middle of the fairway. Greens were running about 12 when I played. All in all a great day of golf .
nice, gorgeous views and elevated tee boxes... greens rolled very true
I am gonna make this course a staple everytime in this area. I loved it.
Amazing course in good shape and a difficult mountain layout.
I got a great deal due to weather on a golfnow hot deal. I was supposed to play Valley but they put me out on the mountain for my benefit as I was a single and there were a few foursomes on the Valley. I was able to play unhindered the entire round and finished in less than 3 hours. The layout requires accuracy off the tee or else penalties start racking up. It ended up raining lightly for the last 5 holes but I was able to shoot my best round ever at this course, an 80. The fairways were in good shape and the greens were great, was one of the most enjoyable rounds I've had in months.
Challenging but a nice course
I booked a quick, last minute booking on this course. What a bargain! I played the Mountain Course and it is always a challenge especially with the roughs so thin due to the season. Stay on the fairway otherwise your ball is gone! Nice quick round with no waiting.
Great views and design
Great views and the course is well maintained. The course has many high to slow layout. On a windy day, it can be a very challenging course, (the day I went was very windy, at least above 30mph wind). The speed of the green is also fair high due to the dry climate.
