ROI only OK
As always, great views on the North Course, and it was a clear day. Unfortunately, pace of play (also seemingly as always) was pretty slow. In defense of the marshals they DID try to keep things moving - part of the issue is the distance between tees and greens, particularly for people who have never played here before. Again, not bad but questionable given the rates...
Awesome Course
Tremendous property in swanky hills above Crystal Cove. The North Course is well designed with many good golf holes. Tom Fazio quality on very special piece of land. Panoramic views of Ocean on every hole, mansions built on cliffs of canyons are cool to see but not too close to take away from the game. Getable for a good striker of the golf ball , forgiving enough for the high handicapper. Overall, not an easy course (have you played a Fazio that is?). The greens large and undulated with decent speed make for a challenging layout, especially from 6500 yards or more. Par 3s solid holes, 4s and 5s are the stars of this course. I got a deal time of $205 and thought it a good value for this quality of golf in a great location. Torrey Pines is a true ‘Championship Course’ with several iconic holes and my favorite in Southern California. Pelican Hills North is a close second. I look forward to play Pelican Hills South in the future. Cheers
Newport Coast Gem
Challenging 18 hole layout with many carries over ravines. Loved the course, greens, and staff.
Superior to the South
Though the South Course at Pelican Hill gets a bit more attention for its two oceanside holes, the North is the better (and more lightly played by visitors) layout, with better overall long-range ocean views, as well as a better collection of holes. It's a fairly typical Fazio affair, just with some great vistas and canyon-hopping routing. Given 10 rounds on property, I'd allot the North 6 of them.
Beautiful course
Always looking love playing Pelican Hill. So glad they partnered with GolfNow. Booking was easy
and price was great.
Not quite Troon, but scenery makes it up for 5 star
One of Fazio design at its best. The blessing is the course is sitting on a terrific terrain. Almost every hole has view to the ocean, somewhat panoramic though. Half of the holes have great layout, the other half are somewhat average. The quality of course is not quite Troon level actually. I expected better for the price I was paying. Still had blast paying this course today, and I'll be back for South next time.
North Course at PH delivers again,
This was my second time at the PH North in little over a year. The course was in even better shape than previously. The greens were a bit slower as I played at the end of the day on Sunday.... still very true and held up speed well.
The layout, unlike the South Course, prevents you from overpowering the course. A good plan and positioning of the ball will reward any level player. I've put my driver back in the bag on several holes and opted out to 4 iron or 3 wood on several holes, which rewarded me with a fantastic scoring opportunity. My plying partners, assigned by the shop, were equally surprised how the course rewards smart play over power play.... this makes this a thinking golfers track and one that I will come back to over and oner. In fact this was one of my best rounds ever.
I do recommend the North course to anyone that wants to play Pelican Hill and does not want to be defeated by lack of power, but likes the risk reward that the course offers.
For me, I will be back here in couple of weeks and will do the North Course again.
Nice course
Course was in fairly good condition. Weather was unseasonably cold and windy. Greens were immaculant, but reading them is quite difficult. Most putts break toward the ocean... have to remember that.
challenging and tough green
Beautiful golf course, with many pitch angle challenges. Coming from Flat Land Florida, the angles were fun, but challenging. Greens were tough to read. Overall, our group had a lot of fun. Beverage cart came around frequently. Carts have gps, which helped a lot. Pace was steady this day.
Good view, but not that good as I expected
Tee table is not match such good course, view is excellent, but someone said its better than Torrey pine, I don’t think so, there are many house arround you, but TP not. The food of the grill is wonderful!
Ocean View from 17th green
Good course. Unfortunately due to the rain, we have to play by cart path only. View is great. Greens are impossible to read
Best golf club in Southern California
The most beautiful property you’ve ever seen. Beautiful vistas of the ocean with gorgeous sunsets. Two amazing golf courses, immaculately maintained. The South Course runs close to the water while the North Course has more expansive views and is a harder course. Both are beautiful and it’s hard to pick one over the other. If you have the option of two rounds, play both courses. No question you will be more satisfied than going to ANY other golf course in Southern California. Way better than Torrey Pines and arguably as good as Pebble Beach.
Perfection!
This is my favorite course at Pelican Hill. This North Course has gorgeous fairways, beautifully rolled greens and stunning views. It’s a tough course that will challenge you so play the tee’s based on handicap. If you want to be impressed by a golf course and have a wonderful time playing go here. Green Fees are high but twilight gives you a big break. Stunning course, a must play if you’re in the area.
Third and likely last trip ...
We had stayed at the lodge and played both courses twice two years ago. We came back b/c we had a nice experience: high quality of service, course conditions and management. This is no the case now. It was bad from start to finish: poor attitude/sense of entitlement from valet to pro shop to poor course conditions and unfriendly servers at the grille. I won’t waste more time describing other disappointments. Maybe it’s new management or too much self-propaganda, but we’ll unlikely return and will discourage other high-end friends to stay/play here. It’s too bad b/c it’s such a nice property.
Excellent Resort Golf
Played Pelican Hill for the first time today. Really fun course and worth the money. The North course was challenging and fair. There are a lot of great vistas and and some awesome canyon golf.
Positives:
-Carts are brand new and nice with a non-intrusive GPS.
-The course is in excellent shape. Great greens that run quick.
-Excellent locker room and amenities.
-Challenging design. Every hole feels unique. There's a lot of strategy needed.
-Ocean views!
-Valet parking, excellent service.
-All day breakfast burritos.
Negatives:
-Not inexpensive
-Ryan in the golf shop was curt and unwelcoming.
-Range hits off artificial grass.
Great course
This is one of the nicest courses in Southern California. A bit of a drive from Los Angeles but certainly worth it for the view and course conditions. Staff for the most part - courteous and friendly.
Practice facility very nice with different target greens to aim at. Today we hit off grass although at times, they move the hitting areas to the artificial turf.
Fun course with lots of different looks and elevation changes, ocean views and excellent conditions. Greens are rolling true and takes awhile to figure out.
Definitely a must play course.
