Good pace of play but fairways needs some love.
Weather and pace of play were great. The course was in OK condition at best as the fairways are in need of some serious attention. Some pretty soggy areas and bare patches on every fairway. with the amount of standing water (pretty good sized puddles) on the cart path's it leads me to believe they are over watering which is causing the fairways to get burned out. Greens ran pretty true and picked up speed as it warmed up more later in the round. Will play here again but with the courses current condition I do not believe it warrants the price rate paid.
Getting There
Rancho was in best shape I’ve seen it. There were only a couple of drainage issues as opposed to dozens. The sand in the bunkers was great. The greens were in good shape. The fairways were much better - still need work but better.
Not worth the price
So I’ll keep this short and to the point. We a group of players that play 4-6 rounds per month. I picked this course because we camped at Newport Dunes. The staff was friendly and the starter/Ambassador was especially outgoing giving us lots of useful course info.
The condition of tee boxes was fair at best, fairways were poor, way to much yellow Burt grass and dirt patches. Best part of course was the greens, I would rate them as excellent! Fast and tough, was the best part of the round.
Pace of play was horrible! The groupings were too close together and too many 5somes which made our round 5 hours. For the $68 green fees, I would not recommend this course. Get some water on the fairways, repair the cart paths and gap the tee times, even only a couple of mins more apart and this could be a really good place to play.
Wet day
Played at 645 am on a rainy drizzly day. Course was in great condition considering the conditions. Other than wet grips and hands not being able to control the club, very enjoyable.
Slow play
Took 3 hrs to play 9 holes. Pace was extremely slow and did not see 1 Marshall to help push things along. Also did not see cart girl at all. Greens with punched a couple weeks back and needed to be rolled and cut.
The Potential is There
Sometimes its the little things that set you apart::
Practice green has terrible layout.
Too many fairway dirt/bare patches.
Needs better directional signage from hole to hole.
Clean up the maintenance junk.
Plus side:
The greens were in great shape.
Good place to play
The GolfNow reservation did not showed up in their system but the counter person was able to accommodate us in a good time .
Much better 2nd time around
Very enjoyable, played blue tees, greens were slow, recently aerated. Course is fun and fair
Overall, not a bad course.
If you are a Players Club member, then its a good course to practice on. Pace of play can be painfully slow at times. Need marshalls to push some slow players along.
